How To Kiss Someone Well, In 8 Tongue-Tying Steps

We’re always hearing that we could be having better sex, a better orgasm, or a better relationship. But how often do we hear the nitty-gritty of how we can actually better understand our deepest desires and most embarrassing questions? Bustle has enlisted Vanessa Marin, a sex therapist, to help us out with the details. No gender, sexual orientation, or question is off limits, and all questions remain anonymous. Now, onto today’s topic: how to kiss someone well. Even if you're already pretty great at it, there's probably something more you can learn.

Q: I've kissed a few people, but I still feel like I'm not as good of a kisser as I could be. How do I know if I'm a good kisser? Can you give me any kissing tips? How can I be sure I'm really kissing someone well? (If you can't tell, I'm feeling kind of nervous about this. I mean, kissing is important! It can make or break your connection with someone.)

A: Thanks for the question! So many people overlook kissing, especially once they’ve moved on to other “bases”. But kissing is a ridiculous amount of fun, and is fully deserving of your attention and effort. It's also super important to intimacy, foreplay, and attraction in general. Here are eight steps to up your kissing game, since we could all use a kissing refresher!

Take Your Time

Arguably the best tip I could give you is to go slow and ease your way into every kiss. If you’re feeling anxious about your kissing abilities, that anxiety is likely spurring you into rushing your way through it. But no one likes kissing someone who is hyperactive and all over the place. Kissing is supposed to be relaxing and sensual! Go nice and slow until you feel yourself start to settle down and get into the groove.

Use The Right Amount Of Pressure

One of the most basic ways that people mess up kissing is by going to extremes with the amount of pressure they use. Some people are way too forceful with their kisses, and wind up bumping teeth, pushing their partner backwards, or coming off as aggressive. Other people are shy and timid, and their kisses end up feeling lifeless. Think about handshakes: it feels strange when someone squeezes your hand way too tightly, and kinda creepy when you get a limp handshake. You have to use some pressure but not too much.

I know this will sound silly, but you can practice finding the right amount of pressure by using the back of your hand! Try pressing your lips loosely against your hand, then pressing them forcefully. From there, try to find a middle-of-the-road level of firmness that feels just right.

Use Your Tongue Wisely

Another common characteristic of "bad "kissing is using way too much tongue. When you first start kissing someone, keep the tongue out of it until things start to heat up. Focus more on all the different ways you can kiss with just your lips — keeping your mouth closed, opening it slightly, intertwining your lips with your partners’, pouting your lips, and so on.

When it comes time to add some tongue, be gentle. Your tongue is an incredibly strong muscle, so you need to be careful not to go overboard. Try just gently touching your tongue to your partner’s at first. Imagine that your tongues are softly caressing each other. Don’t jab at your partner with your tongue, and don’t put too much of your tongue into their mouth. Just gentle caresses.

If you feel unsure about how to use your tongue, try practicing on the back of your hand again. Give your hand a firm jab with your tongue, just so you can see how strong your tongue is. Then play away with different ways of moving your tongue across your skin. I know it will feel silly to “practice” on your hand, but it really is an easy way to get a sense of how things feel!

Get Your Whole Body Involved

The best kisses involve your entire bodies, not just your lips! Wrap your arms around your partner’s body, or stroke their arms, shoulders, and back with your hands. Press your body up against theirs. Hold their face in your hands, or run your hands through their hair. You can also take little breaks from their lips to kiss their necks or ears. Use your body to create some variety.

Be A Tease

Teasing your partner between kisses is a ton of fun! Here are a few easy techniques to try:

  • Break away from a kiss and look your partner in the eye, with a sly smile on your face.
  • Pull your lips away and gently stroke their lower lip with your thumb.
  • Keep your slightly-open mouth close to theirs and breathe in and out together.
  • Brush your lips against your partner’s, without actually kissing them.

Adapt Your Technique

You can work on kissing techniques all you want, but the reality is that each person you kiss is going to have a different kissing style. When you’re kissing someone, pay attention to what your partner is doing and what they seem to respond to best.

Are they moving their tongue very slowly? Do they let out a little moan each time you bite their lower lip? Try to adapt your routine to theirs. If you’re unsure of what your partner likes, say to them, “kiss me how you like to be kissed,” then follow their lead. That way, you’ll learn exactly what they like.

Don’t Judge Yourself

Even though I’ve tried to give you lots of techniques to experiment with, I want to encourage you not to think about technique too much as you’re kissing. Try to get out of your head and stop analyzing what you’re doing in the moment — just feel what's happening.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that you’re not going to have great kissing chemistry with everyone you meet. Sometimes it’s just going to feel “off” or awkward. That doesn’t make you a bad kisser, it just means you haven’t found the right kissing partner!

FASHION 7 WAYS TO WEAR A WHITE T-SHIRT

Long skirts are back! Add a white tee and you’re ready to go! Whether it’s stripe, polk-a-dot, rainbow or animal prints, a white tee is an easy add. Madewell is a great place to add these staple skirts.

When in doubt, pull your white t-shirt out.

Ask any it girl their favorite wardrobe staple, and at least half will say a really good white t-shirt. Whether you prefer your go-to tee to be from Fruit of the Loom or Vince, this a tee you can wear effortlessly hundreds of ways. The versatility of a good white t-shirt can take you from season to season and outfit to outfit. Here are my 7 favorite ways to wear this endlessly chic and simple piece.

Nothing like a plain white t-shirt and some boyfriend fit jeans. If it starts to feel too simple add a colored tote back to add an accent piece.

Leather can be tough to wear. Pairing bold leather jackets, pants, or skirts with a simple white t-shirt really downplay the look and give it a wearable feel. A white t-shirt breaks down the tough and bold fabric, giving the type of contrast fit for the runway.

Let’s talk about white on white. Some say no and some say yes. Well in this case, Emmy is rocking this white on white. Be creative with your white t-shirts and don’t be afraid of the white on white action.

If you decide your outfit is just too boring with a white tee and some black jeans, try adding some gold jewelry. White tees can sometimes feel too simple, so start stacking your necklaces and adding on some rings and bracelets and you’ll feel dressed up and outfit completed.

The perfect way to dress up your white tee, add a blazer. Adding

WHITE TEE + BLAZER

Unsure if your client is in a stuffy suit or sweatpants? Wearing a blazer on top of a white t-shirt can give you a universal feeling. Just like a mullet, this look can party or business.

Sexiest nightwear EVER?

BOOHOO thought out of the box with this nightwear design. The kinky Wrap Me Up Bow would be sure to spice things up in the bedroom.

During the winter months, you’d have to be brave to sleep naked.

As the coldest season approaches, many of us will be reaching for our slippers and fluffy pyjamas.

Online retailer Boohoo agrees that we should be wrapping ourselves up – but not how you may expect.

The clothing store recently revealed its kinkiest “nightwear” item yet.

Boohoo is currently flogging the Wrap Me Up Bow in the sale.

For £9.80, customers have the option of dressing up like a sexy Christmas present.

Sporting the skimpy look on the website, a model risks a serious wardrobe malfunction.

The asymmetric garment has a high leg cut and thong bottom, exposing much of the crotch region.

A statement bow at the front provides slightly more coverage for the cleavage.

BOW DOWN: Is this the naughtiest nightwear of all time? (Pic: BOOHOO)

ALL WRAPPED UP: This could work as a Christmas present for your partner (Pic: BOOHOO)

Customers have the option of buying the risqué pyjamas in red or black colours.

Both are fashioned out of velvet-like material, which should make the clothing item feel more comfortable than it looks.

The Wrap Me Up Bow isn’t the only Boohoo nightwear that would make your partner blush.

Black mesh seems to be a big trend on the popular fashion website.

Shoppers can snap up a see-through bra and shorts set, or tease their lovers with a lace nightie.

SWEET DREAMS: This nightwear is sexier than typical PJs (Pic: BOOHOO)

Wondering what other style is trending this winter?

Tartan is one of the biggest fashion trends of the season, featuring in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

After models strut their stuff on the catwalk, Poundland released replica looks.

Holly Willoughby has also been spotted wearing checked clothing in recent months.

Democrat women launch naked 'Grab Them By The Ballot' campaign to try and get people to vote

Ten women took part in a naked photoshoot in the hope that the pictures could be part of a much wider push to get people going to the polls on the 6 November.

Dawn Robertson, 48, organised the shoot with women of different sizes, sexualities and colours following the Me Too revelations and Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination and subsequential appointment as Supreme Court judge.

The models, who the Harvard Law graduate found on social media, include a Latina, a trans woman, an abduction survivor and a pregnant woman

"I went up to a woman in a market and asked her to pose for me and she said yes," she said.

People in real life were actually far more receptive to the idea than communities online.

Melodi Blackbird, 44, Susan Lipkin, 65, Gina Carerra, 56, Tara Beach, 34, Alexandra Martin, 31, Nyla Smith, 22, Gina Higgins, 37, Courtney Blasius, 31, a transgender woman who goes by the initial Z, 28, and Robertson all posed nude with ballots placed in front of their genitals.

With the Kavanagh nomination and Me Too and Trump, women are rising everywhere.

Robertson added that the attack on women’s reproductive rights and trans rights also prompted her to launch the campaign, naming it after President Trump’s infamous comments made during an interview with Access Hollywood aboard a bus.

What the Republicans are doing to transgender rights, the way they are attacking women's reproductive rights and the collective trauma means that women are really coming to the forefront now.

I hope that the pictures encourage women and marginalised communities to vote. I want them to know that their voice matters and this is serious s***.

Robertson said she faced a lot of backlash resulting from the nude photoshoot.

I was told I was objectifying women, that nudity equals promiscuity and even that I was playing the part of a white saviour. But I don't think that the pictures over-sexualise the women.

Nudity is fine, being naked is a natural expression. Men have sexualised and monetised women's bodies but these pictures give the power back to the woman.

Z, a Jewish transgender woman decided to take part in order to point out the mistreatment of the trans community under Trump, whilst Latina artist Gina Carerra, 56, wanted to highlight the administration’s mistreatment of minorities.

Gorgeous Siblings You Didn't Know These Celebrities HadHooch

When you’re a star as big as Eminem or Steph Curry, you might cast a shadow that is too big to get away from. That is especially true for their siblings. Did you even know the real Slim Shady had a brother? Be prepared because this list of celebrities with siblings you hardly hear about will surprise you.

J-Lo’s Sister Lynda Lopez

The stunning entertainer Jennifer Lopez doesn’t have a hard time staying in the spotlight. One seductive post on Instagram and boom, the star is once again the topic of every conversation. However, have you heard of her sister, Lynda Lopez? Lynda is two years younger than Jennifer and was a former New York television journalist who is also a single mom.

That’s one thing that Jennifer praises her younger sister about, how great of a parent her sister Lynda is. “I just love and respect her so much. She’s a single mom but not like I’m a single mom,” Lopez told US Magazine. “I have a lot of help — she doesn’t.”

Not A Twin But Still Looks The Same

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been stars since they were toddlers starring in Full House. But even some of their biggest fans may not know about their sister Elizabeth Olsen! Elizabeth started making more of a name for herself as an actress in 2017, making it easier to step out of the shadows of her more successful sisters.

They even gave her advice on dealing with the press. “They’d say, ‘You know, even if you don’t think anyone’s going to read this article, someone might pull the quote later for [something else].’ It’s all part of how you hope someone interprets you, and how they frame who you are and the work you do,” Elizabeth said. Up next, it was supposed to be just the two of them but that isn’t the case.

The First Smith Son

Long before Willow Smith was whipping her head back and forth and Jaden Smith was doing his rendition of Karate Kid, there was the first son that Will Smith became a parent to, and his name is Trey Smith. Born in 1992, the 25-year-old isn’t in the limelight as much as Willow and Jaden.

We first saw Trey when he was in the “Just The Two Of Us” music video. He was a star football player in school and was even offered a scholarship but chose to pursue a career in music like his father and other two siblings did. Trey has released some of his own music but he hasn’t found the same success as his siblings or father.

This Wizard Has A Brother

Ever since Emma Watson came into our lives as a young and zesty wizard on Harry Potter, she has amassed a huge following. While her biggest fans might be aware, others may not have a clue that Emma has a brother named Alex Watson.

Alex is a model who has done campaigns for Burberry. The two share similarities in appearance, so maybe Emma could step into some modeling as well? Alex was also an extra in one of the Harry Potter films. You get extra points if you know which one.

The Pitt We Don’t Hear About

Brad Pitt probably gained more clout to his name by being with Angelina Jolie than his brother Doug Pitt has accumulated in his whole career. We hardly, if ever, hear about Doug and that isn’t by accident. He likes to stay out of the attention of media and lives in his home state of Missouri. One thing he isn’t fond of is questions about his brother.

“I appreciate the interest [in Brad]. I understand why people want to ask about him,” he told NOVA FM. “But I’ve answered the same question for 25 years. And so, you do go a little bit on autopilot… Again, I appreciate the interest. I’m really proud of him.”

Rihanna’s Brother Rajad Fenty

That’s right, the island queen has a younger sibling that rarely is talked about. Rihanna AKA Robyn Fenty has a younger brother by the name of Rajad Fenty. Being that the singing sensation is always working hard whether it be with music or her makeup line, she hardly gets to spend time with family.

When she does have time for the family, you can catch her living it up with her mom and dad she loves dearly and her younger brother, Rajad. The two are really close despite the restricted amount of time they get to spend together. Next in line, the rap god has a brother?

The Real Slim Shady?

When it comes to Eminem, there are three truths. One is, he grew up on 8 Mile in Detroit, he and his mother had a strange relationship when he was growing up and he can rap circles around anyone. Something that many are unaware of is that Eminem has a brother.

His brother is also a rapper but clearly, not on the same level as Marshall Mathers. His name is Nathan Kane Mathers and was taken away from his mother when he was ten years old and sent to live in foster care. Trying to make it as a rapper when your older brother is arguably one of the best can be a tough task.

Steph Vs. Seth

Steph Curry, who hasn’t heard of the MVP and NBA champion? The guy can literally shoot from anywhere and when he shoots it, the chances of him making it are higher than most. Curry has played on only one team for his entire career and is a staple in the NBA. But did you know he has a brother who also plays in the NBA?

Seth Curry, the younger brother of Steph, currently plays for the Dallas Mavericks. He isn’t as freakishly talented of a player as his brother Steph, but he has the same shooting touch. They briefly played on the same team before the Warriors decided to cut him.

Tom Cruise Has A Sister?!

Due to the obscurities surrounding Tom Cruise’s religious beliefs as a Scientologist, some matters in his personal life are not put on full display. We know Cruise is a great actor and that he is apart of the cultish religion but something most have not known about is his sister. Who you see above is Lee Ann Mapother DeVette.

When Tom’s very first girlfriend was interviewed she was asked about his family and siblings. “I think he grew up too fast but he was very close with his three sisters. One time he said he’s so close to them they taught him how to kiss,” she told the Daily Mail.

Would You Get Them Confused?

Actor Josh Hutcherson who all of you are most familiar with his role as Peeta from the Hunger Games series isn’t the only child his parents produced. After gaining much acclaim for playing a part in Katniss Everdeen’s love triangle, Hutcherson became a product of fan love.

But something fans might not have even realized is that he has a younger brother, Connor Hutcherson. “I am more handsome than Josh is, well jokes apart; it is ironic how people get confused with me and him, we don’t look alike at all,” Connor said. No jokes coming up next, they are really related!

No, You’re Not Getting Punk’d

Ashton Kutcher is a funny guy that gets much love. From his days on That 70’s Show to his work in films, Kutcher has made a huge name for himself and even has one of the more gorgeous women in Hollywood, Mila Kunis. Did you know that he has a twin brother?

His twin brother’s name is Michael and he has cerebral palsy. He also had a heart transplant when he was younger. Michael currently is a spokesperson for the advocacy organization Reaching for the Stars. They support people with cerebral palsy.

Captain America Has A Brother

Being one of the most famous superheroes is a not a task easily handled. Especially for one that likes to take his shirt off with a body of an Olympian. For Chris Evans, he is used to the attention, however, for his brother Scott Evans, he receives a different type of attention due to his sexuality.

Chris’ brother Scott is gay, and Chris encourages others to see and embrace other lifestyles different from your own. “It’s important to understand, whether it’s growing up with women, whether it’s growing up with other ethnic groups… it’s important to experience anything different from what you know. To encourage and cultivate compassion and understanding,” Chris said.

A Cruz Of A Relationship

Penélope Cruz was signed by an agent at 15 and made her acting debut at 16. She’s always had the good looks and acting skills to pair with it and clearly, she’s always had a sister who is equally as charming. She just isn’t on the same level of Penélope.

Her sister’s name is Monica Cruz and she is also following in her sister’s footsteps. Why not, right? Monica is a Spanish actress and dancer. The two sisters have started a clothing line together as well. A gorgeous sister with a good looking brother up next.

Scarlett Is A Twin

Here we have another Marvel superhero and she goes by the name of Scarlett Johansson. Another Hollywood beauty who many probably had no clue is a twin! They aren’t identical but still, having a fraternal twin is something anyone could enjoy.

Hunter should be amused that practically every guy finds his sister to be one of the hottest women on Earth. Hunter is also an actor, at the start of his career. The twins shared the screen in a film called Manny & Lo.

Nothing Wrong With Being Protective

High School Musical actress, Vanessa Hudgens is not the only Hudgens blessing others with her beauty. Something fans may be unaware of is her younger sister that she is apparently really close with. Her name is Stella Hudgens and Vanessa is worried about her growing up.

In an interview, Vanessa was asked about her sister and this is what she had to say: “She’s 15 and I’m kind of terrified and I feel like a mother, ‘call me when you get to the movies,’ it’s bad.” Another Hunger Games participant is up next, you won’t want to miss.

The Lawrence Siblings

Jennifer Lawrence displays her sense of humor whenever she gets the chance. Her fans know how funny she is and so do the casual fans who watch the award shows. She is a great entertainer and she also has two bearded brothers. Their names are Blaine and Ben Lawrence.

They for sure know what their sister does for a living but if you ask Jennifer what either of them do, she is at a loss for words. “God, I don’t know,” she answered. “It’s something with computers… It’s something called Louisville Geek I think. I think he goes to an office?”

Give Me Some Advice, Bro

A brotherly bond is a bond that can’t be duplicated. Once the two of you become close, it’s like you have another brain on your side. You can go to them for anything, especially advice. Can you believe that Zac Efron has a brother named Dylan? They actually live together too!

“If I’m dating someone, one of the few people I need to weigh in on the situation is my brother,” Zac told Cosmopolitan. “We live together, and we’re different in a lot of ways, but he’s really grounded. He lived a more normal life than I did growing up, so he’s a great barometer for me.”

The Other Michael Jordan Has A Sister

Yet again another Marvel actor, Michael B. Jordan has been making waves in the entertainment world ever since his breakthrough performance in the film Fruitvale Station. Jordan acts in all types of films and doesn’t like to be put in a box but he is also very particular about the roles he picks. One thing he isn’t particular about is showing love to his sister.

“I have a sister. I never really wanted to do females wrong. You can’t act like that,” the actor told Oprah. “So, you don’t want to treat any woman any differently than you’d want a man to treat your sister,” Oprah says. “One hundred and ten percent,” Jordan agrees.

The Stallone Brothers

Although most of us know Sylvester Stallone for his roles as the Vietnam War veteran or boxing champion, not everyone knows about Stallone’s younger brother Frank. Frank is also an actor, yet has not been nearly as successful as his older brother. he has played small roles such as a singer in the Rocky franchise, and other films such as Return of the Roller Blade Seven and Zero Dark Thirty.

Although he doesn’t take his acting career to seriously, he has a successful singer-songwriter career, and his track “Far From Over” earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture.

Colin Firth Has a Brother

As it turns out, our favorite English chap Colin Firth has a brother. His name is Jonathan, and he as well loves wearing costumes and acting in drama, yet hasn’t been on screen in for quite a few years. Although he, unfortunately, starred in The Prince and Me 4: The Elephant Adventure, he is actually a well-experienced and trained actor.

After training at the Central School of Speech and Drama, he toured with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2003, he was awarded the CTF Excellence Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Luther.

Buscemi’s Other Acting Brother

Although the well-known actor Steve Buscemi has a total of three brothers, his brother Michael is an actor as well. Although not as popular as Steve, Michael has been involved in a variety of projects ranging from television to movies and even voice acting.

Recently, he has been working on the hit television show Gotham and has made appearances in other shows such as Nurse Jackie, Blue Bloods, and is expected to be in an episode of Orange is the New Black in the next season. He was also in films such as I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and Lonesome Jim.

Noah Cyrus

Noah Cyrus is Miley Cyrus’ 17-year-old younger sister. Although she may have been out of the limelight for most of her life, she has recently launched a surprisingly promising pop and acting career. In 2009, she voiced the title role in the English version of the film Ponyo, and in 2016, she released her debut single “Make Me (Cry)” which featured vocals from Labyrinth.

She began her acting career when she was just 2 years old on the television show Doc and was on six episode of Disney Channel’s Hanna Montana. Since 2016, her music career has been on its way up and she’s opened up for artists such as Katy Perry.

The Lost Skarsgard Brother

The Skarsgard brothers all come from an acting family with their father being the renowned Stellan Skarsgard. We also already know Alexander from his numerous star roles and now the other brother Bill from his performance as Pennywise in the newest remake of It. Yet, people often forget that there is a third acting Skarsgard brother named Gustaf.

He is a Swedish actor that is best-known outside of Scandinavia for his role as Floki in the History Channel series Vikings and for his roles in the films Evil, The Way Back, and Kon-Tiki. His acting career began when he was nine and as continued all the way up until present day.

Hayden Panettiere’s Younger Brother

Jasen Panettiere is the younger brother to actress, model, and singer Hayden Panettiere. Although he is far less well-known than his older sister, he has still managed to make a name for himself.

Born in 1994, Jasen is a television, film, and voice actor. He is best known for his roles in The Perfect game, Ice Age: The Meltdown, and The Martial Arts Kid. He has appeared on screen with his sister twice and even lent his voice in the film Racing Stripes in which Hayden appeared. As of late, he has been rather low-key, except he has two films both in pre-production at the moment.

The Leto Brothers

Although we are all familiar with the famous actor and singer Jared Leto, most people are unaware that he has an older brother named Shannon. Shannon is also a founding member as well as musician and songwriter for the band 30 Seconds to Mars where he plays the drums and Jared sings.

The band has sold over 15 million records worldwide and has been received well by the public. Shannon has also been in numerous other side projects during his drumming career from other rock bands to street drum corps. he has also acted in minor roles for a few films and television shows throughout the years.

The Styles Siblings

Gemma Styles is pop star Harry Styles 27-year-old older sister. She was essentially unknown until Harry gained fame as a member of One Direction. She now has over 4.1 million followers on Instagram and is currently a contributing writer for U.K.’s The Debrief and writes for blogs such as “Could You Handle Dating a Royal?” She also writes for MTV U.K. and covers topics through the eyes of a young Millenial.

In 2013, she graduated from Sheffield Hallam University and is a well-known fashionista. She also is attributed to starting the #GirlCrush movement which is about pushing women to appreciate “the substance of a person – not just their Instagram pictures.”

Jude Law’s Big Sis

Natasha Law is famous actor Jude Law’s older sister. She is a professional artist who was introduced to the creative world at a very young age and quit her education at the University of Warwick studying history to study art at Camberwell College of Arts in South London.

Since then, Natasha has had a career packed full of graphic illustration, photography, and stying. She now has many admirers of her work such as Gwyneth Paltrow Jo Whiley and more. Many of her clients are also quite impressive such as Vogue, Max Mara, Samsung, and more.

Eddie Redmayne’s Successful Younger Brother

Tom Redmayne is the younger brother to actor Eddie Redmayne. Eddie is known for his role in films like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Theory of Everything, and The Danish Girl as well as a handful of television shows and plays.

While Eddie’s resume may be impressive, so is his lesser-known brother’s. Tom is the former Assistant Surveyor at Cushman & Wakefield, which is a commercial real estate services firm with locations worldwide. Today he spends his days at the Director of Business Development for Wired.

Ariana Grande’s “Big Brother”

Frankie James Grande isn’t a household name like Ariana Grande, but it may be someday. Frankie is an actor, dancer, singer, producer, television host, and a YouTube personality. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also the older half-brother to the “One Less Problem” singer.

Although he might not be as famous as his little sister, he has made a name for himself as a contestant on Big Brother. These siblings are super close too and regularly post photos and inside jokes on their social media channels.

Nicole Isn’t The Only Richie Daughter

Sofia Richie has earned her spot in a slew of tabloids thanks to mingling with Kourtney Kardashian’s ex and baby daddy, Scott Disick, although she can’t even legally drink yet. Yet despite being in the spotlight, many people don’t realize that Sofia is the younger sister of Nicole Richie.

Yep, Sofia is the biological daughter of music legend Lionel Richie and Diane Alexander. Although the sisters, who aren’t biologically related, are rarely pictured together, Sofia was featured on an episode of Nicole’s new series, Candidly Nicole.

The Levine Brother You Never Knew About

Michael Levine is the brother of Maroon 5 frontman, Adam Levine. When Michael came out, the Levine family rallied behind him. “We all really wanted to provide some cushion for him and constantly let him know that it’s OK,” Levine told OUT.

“A lot of people don’t want their kid to be gay and will fight it at all costs. But I’ve got news for you — it’s a losing f–king battle. The more you fight it, the more f–ked-up your kid’s gonna be. You’ve just got to embrace it from the beginning. That’s the only way to deal with it as a family,” the Maroon 5 frontman added.

Mandi Gosling Stole The Show At The 2017 Oscars

When Ryan Gosling took his little sister, Mandi, as his date to the 89th Academy Awards, the internet lost its mind. It wasn’t the first time his older sister accompanied her A-lister brother out, but her flawless outfit landed her amongst the headlines.

Although Mandi leads a relatively private life, she’s very talented in her own right behind the scenes. Her YouTube channel includes clips from California State University Northridge’s TV shows OnPoint and Valley View News. Even more impressive, she has assisted and produced episodes of Dateline and Miss Advised, and cast the people in Pharrell’s viral music video for “Happy.”

When Two Become One

Louise Adams is the younger sister of Victoria Beckham, also known as Posh Spice. While Victoria may be known for her sharp sense of style, Louise isn’t to be overlooked. She has been photographed all over the world wearing chic fashions and even has her own small boutique called Hidden Closet in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.

Louise even playfully admits she got into show business before her sister. In an interview with Daily Mail, she said, “I was in the children’s TV programme Dramarama and played a member of a gang. But I got sick of auditions and modeling in magazines and decided to quit. Victoria carried on and went to theatre school. If people think I’m just cashing in on my sister’s success, I don’t care because I know it was me that did it first.

Rashida Jones’ Big Sister

Kidada Jones is Rashida Jone’s older sister. Born to legendary composer Quincey Jones and actress Peggy Lipton, Kidada grew up in Bel-Air with Rashida. The World's Hottest Grandma reached another huge career milestone on Thursday after being included in Maxim Australia's annual Hot 100 list.

Gina Stewart, who placed No. 90 on the list, told Daily Mail Australia that she was 'honoured' to be included.'I can’t believe I would be on such a list with truly famous people,' the 48-year-old exclaimed. 'I’m honoured and in shock.'

'I’m honoured and in shock!' The World's Hottest Grandma Gina Stewart, 48, told Daily Mail Australia that she was shocked to make it onto Maxim magazine's annual Hot 100 list

'I’m just going to continue spreading positive messages and being myself.'

The mother-of-four first shot to fame earlier this year when she entered an online Maxim modelling competition in a bid to win money for a close friend who suffered a stroke.

Despite failing to win, Gina was able to raise $4,700 for her friend through a Go Fund Me page.

'I’m just going to continue spreading positive messages and being myself,' said the busty star

The Gold Coast grandmother is now competing in the Maxim Cover Girl Competition for a chance at covering an upcoming American edition of the magazine, as well as to win a $25,000 cash prize.

If she wins, Gina has vowed to give up a portion of the prize money to charity.

The moment the relationship crumbled: Strictly's Seann Walsh looks glum as he is driven away from studios with fuming girlfriend after his cheating was revealed - hours before she dumped him by Twitter

  • Seann Walsh was seen kissing his married Strictly Come Dancing partner Katya
  • The comedian, 32, was dumped by his actress girlfriend Rebecca Humphries
  • Images have now emerged of the pair rowing hours before her official statement
  • Miss Humphries told Twitter she has officially dumped Walsh and took their cat

Seann Walsh's ex-girlfriend Rebecca Humphries was pictured delivering what appeared to be an emotional telling off to the cheat just hours before she publicly announced she has dumped him.

Images have now emerged from Saturday evening when the pair were seen in the back of a car together, leaving the BBC One studios where comedian Seann is competing in Strictly Come Dancing.

Over the weekend, photographs emerged of him kissing his Russian dance partner Katya Jones - who is married to another dancer on the show.Rebecca dumped Seann and released a fierce statement on Twitter on Monday, in which she revealed she had suspected an affair for three weeks.

Seann Walsh looked glum as his now ex girlfriend Rebecca Humphries leaned towards him in the back of a car

The pair looked visibly distressed as they left the studios on Saturday evening after pictures emerged of the kiss between Sean and his dance partner

Rebecca gazed out of the window with a troubled look on her face as she left the studios with her boyfriend

The stage star who has appeared at playhouses across the city also announced her boyfriend of five years labelled her a 'psycho' and said she was 'nuts' when she questioned him earlier.

However, her fears were proven on Sunday when images of him kissing Katya in steamy scenes on a London street were released. The pictures were taken on Wednesday, October 3 - Rebecca's birthday.

The pair were reportedly at the Duke Of York pub in Marylebone in Central London at around midnight.

An onlooker who witnessed Seann and Katya's kiss, told the Sun they were 'snogging like a pair of teenagers' and 'didn't seem to care who might see them'.

Miss Humphries said in a statement on Twitter she is 'not a victim' and has left Seann, but taken their cat.

She said: 'Those pictures were taken on October 3rd. It was my birthday. I was alone at home when Sean texted at 10pm saying the two of them were going for one innocent drink.

'We spoke and I told him, not for the first time, that his actions over the past three weeks had led me to believe something inappropriate was going on. He aggressively, and repeatedly, called me a psycho/nuts/mental. As he has done countless times throughout our relationship when I’ve questioned his inappropriate, hurtful behaviour.

Meanwhile dancer Katya Jones was seen with husband Neil Jones leaving the studios cuddled up to one another

Rebecca's statement: The actress said she is not a victim and has left Seann and 'took the cat' after he kissed his dance partner in London - on his girlfriend's birthday

‘But- this whole business has served to remind me that I am a strong capable person who is now free; and no victim. I have a voice and will use it by saying this to any woman out there who deep down feels worthless and trapped with a man they love:

'Believe in yourself and your instincts. It’s more than lying. It’s controlling. Tell some very close friends who, if they’re anything like my wonderful network, will swoop in and take care of the logistics and of you.'She also revealed she believes when a person cheats they have a 'need for control comes from a place of vulnerability'.

Seann and Katya both had haunted expressions on Monday morning as they emerged for the first time since pictures emerged of their drunken yet passionate kiss on a London street.

Hours after the images emerged in the Sun on Sunday Katya was pictured with her husband

A year ago: The couple were pictured on Miss Humphries' birthday on October 3, 2017. This year Mr Walsh was kissing another woman in the street

Hard times: Rebecca Humphries’ mother Anne is said to be in 'shock' over Seann Walsh's kiss with married Strictly Come Dancing partner Katya Jones last week (pictured left)

The couple's beloved pet Winston is featured often on their social media - he has been taken by Miss Humphries during the split

Walsh, 32, appeared with baggy eyes outside his home just before 11am after his actress girlfriend Rebecca Humphries hinted she had 'binned' him following his betrayal.

What is spooning? Here's how to do it — and exactly why it's so awesome

Whether you struggle with intimacy issues or not, a little thing called spooning doesn't take much effort at all, and can actually reap some benefits for you and your partner. Sometimes some of us just want to be held, ya know?

play What is spooning? Here's how to do it — and exactly why it's so awesome (GETTY IMAGESVCL/CHRIS RYAN )

If for some reason you haven't been cuddling with your partner after sex, you probably didn't realize that post-sex intimacy is just as important for many people as foreplay.

Whether you struggle with intimacy issues or not, a little thing called spooning doesn't take much effort at all, and can actually reap some benefits for you and your partner. Sometimes some of us just want to be held, ya know?

Spooning refers to lying on your side with a partner (or more!) lying on their side and curling up behind you, mimicking spoons that seamlessly fit together. People have been spooning for centuries, as evident from historic artwork depicting erotic embraces and positions between same-sex and heterosexual couples.

So what are the benefits of spooning? And is there a right way to spoon someone?

Benefits of Spooning

There are some instinctual elements at play as to why spooning tends to trigger such strong emotions.

"The largest organ we have on our bodies is our skin, and the primal urge to have skin-to-skin contact for the majority of humans is due to our desire to be soothed, comforted and loved," explains Sari Cooper, CST, LCSW, founder and director of The Center for Love and Sex in New York City, a private practice specializing in sex therapy, individual, and couples therapy.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

Relaxation And Hormone Release

When you spoon with a partner, you'll notice your breath begin to slow, deepen, and sync, according to Pam Costa, sex coach and founder of Down To There, a resource for people who seek to cultivate better sex and relationships.

"Not only does this feel relaxing, but it also triggers a release of oxycotin, a hormone and neurotransmitter which researchers believe is linked to feelings of bonding and sexual arousal," she says.

There's a reason spooning can provide that feel-good connection between you and your partner. "Spooning is a form of intimacy that helps our nervous system relax," says Rebecca Hendrix, an LMFT psychotherapist in New York City. "We are are hardwired to connect as human beings, and the physical touch and hugging that occurs during spooning lowers our blood pressure and sends a message to our bodies that it’s OK to relax and let go."

Couples Can Feel Closer

Some therapists have even found that employing spooning techniques in their sessions can help couples feel closer.

"When I’m working with couples, I’ll have them try this in the office by setting a timer for five minutes and asking them to lie down together, with as much of their bodies touching as possible, with no agenda other than to observe what is happening in their bodies," Costa says. "By the end of 5 minutes, most couples report feeling closer emotionally and interested in escalating their physical connection."

play (GETTY IMAGES)

Alternate Form Of Intimacy

Spooning is a good alternative for people who have difficulty with eye contact after sex, Cooper points out. The position offers an alternative, where the inside spoon partner is so close to the other they can hear their breathing, feel the other’s heartbeat, and be held - without any demand on that big spoon partner.

It's an Easy Segue To Intercourse

But spooning can also be a sexual position, one that can be easily incorporated if you're feeling a little tired or lazy. During sex, Cooper explains that the inner “spoonnee” is the receiving partner, and the outer spooner is the one penetrating, either with their penis or a strap-on.

"The 'spoonee' can guide their partner in while arching in order to get the right angle," she says. "Depending on each person’s size, there may be some adjusting needed going up, down, or forward in order to get a comfortable fit. Both partners can contribute to the thrusting, and both partners can contribute to stimulating the spoonee so that they are getting aroused externally and internally using hands, fingers, and/or toys."

Is There a Right Way and Right Time to Spoon?

Post-sex spooning is a way to continue the intense intimacy experienced during orgasm.

"There are many ways we make love to each other, with the act of sex being just one of them," says Hendrix. "Spooning and holding each other is a form of expressing love and a deep sense of caring for other."

Challenges Of Holding The Spooning Position

For some couples, staying in one position for an extended period of time may prove challenging.

"Our bodies are basically electric blankets and when we put them next to each other as spoons, it can cause quite a lot of heat, which can make sleeping difficult," Hendrix notes. "One can also experience numbness and tingling from staying in one position too long, or having the weight of your partner’s arm or head on your body."

Adjusting Is Welcome

To alleviate that problem, "it’s helpful to find a comfortable way of holding the side position," Hendrix says. "For some, it may mean folding their elbow in and laying on their hand, while for others they may need some supports like a pillow or wedge under their arm or between their knees to prevent cramping or a limb falling asleep."

Your other arm can either just rest in front of you or be intertwined with your partner's arm for more intimacy.

Big spoon and little spoon

According to Cooper, you can have a specific spooning position preference or alternate between big and little spoon. "Does a person always like to be the leader, or can they enjoy taking turns being a 'switch'?" she says.

But for most people, whether you're solely the big spoon or little spoon has less to do with your personality and more to do with whatever you feel comfortable with in the moment.

What’s a clitoral hood—and does it affect my orgasms?

You realized you have a clitoris and it feels damn good to touch it. But, to this day, you may still be confused by that cute little flap of skin that covers your clit. What does it do? Does it have a name?

Whether you were 12 or 20 the first time you really examined what was going on between your legs, you probably made a lot of discoveries.

Most importantly: You realized you have a clitoris and it feels damn good to touch it. But, to this day, you may still be confused by that cute little flap of skin that covers your clit. What does it do? Does it have a name?

Meet: the clitoral hood. Janet Brito, Ph.D., AASECT-certified sex therapist, is here to tell you all about that little pink protector-plus all its sexy benefits.

What is a clitoral hood?

The glans clitoris-the external, pea-sized part of the clitoris above your urethra-is surrounded by a fold of skin that protects it, Brito explains. That fold of skin, which is technically the upper part of the labia, is referred to as the clitoral hood, and it keeps the clit's 8,000 nerve ending from harm and irritation.

These nerve endings, which give clitoris-owners a whole lot of pleasure, can also easily cause pain-either from too much pressure or too sharp a touch, says Brito. Luckily, that nifty clitoral hood adds an extra layer between the clitoris and a finger/penis/toy, so stimulation can feel pleasurable, not painful. Not to mention, it keeps those nerves from getting irritated throughout the day by something as simple as tight-fitting clothes. For some, the hood is barely noticeable, for others it completely covers the clitoris. No matter the size, it’s there to help.

Okay but what if mine is really, really big?

All clits have clitoral hoods, but as mentioned, they come in all shapes and sizes. If yours completely covers your clitoris, Brito says first and foremost: “Don’t panic.”

The reality is, there is no "normal" size.

But, if want a way to identify how your clitoral hood compares, here is a good analogy: Think of the glans clitoris as the head of a person wearing a sweatshirt. For some, the hood of the sweatshirt rests below the head, some have the hood up just a little, and some have that hood all the way around the head.

That last scenario is what's often referred to as a "hooded clitoris" and it's nothing to stress about. You're not different or weird, and just because you can’t find your vagina’s twin in porn doesn’t make you any less capable of having excellent sex.

So...how does the hood affect my sex life?

When you get turned on, your glans clitoris swells with blood and gets bigger (yeah, kind of like a penis) and that usually pushes your hood aside, thanks to the help of natural lubricant produced by the hood called sebum.

If you have a smaller clitoral hood, you probably won’t notice your hood at all during sex, or you may feel extra-sensitive when your clitoris is directly stimulated (again, everyone is different!).

But if you have one of those aforementioned hooded clitorises, it may not move as easily, which could have an affect on the sensations you feel during stimulation. You may not feel enough stimulation to orgasm while the hood is down (don’t worry you can push it back) or you may need extra pressure against your clitoris and clitoral hood to achieve orgasm.

Brito explains it’s all about finding what works for you, “Some women may find that they need to apply more pressure. Other women may be able to draw the hood back and expose the clitoris. Others prefer to rub the clitoral hood and clitoris together.”

Now, listening to your body can be difficult, so Brito laid out a few tips and tricks for achieving hooded clitoris orgasm:

Focus on clitoral stimulation more than penetration. "Find positions where you or your partner are able to apply sufficient pressure to arouse your clitoris and increase sensation,” says Brito. This may mean using your own fingers to pull the hood back or maneuvering so your partner is able to apply direct pressure on to your hooded clitoris.

Try a toy. If you feel like you just can’t get enough stimulation, Brito recommends incorporating a wand massager into the mix. A good toy is sure to kick your pleasure into high gear.

Grab some lube. When in doubt, lube is always a good call-whether you're using a toy, finger, or otherwise. A little extra lubricant can help decrease any discomfort and increase pleasure.

Experiment, experiment, experiment. All in all, the number one way to have good sex with a hooded clitoris is to test out different techniques. Whether it’s with fingers, tongues, toys, or genitals, the best way to find what’s right for you is to actually spend time exploring your body. So light some candles, put on some music, maybe even grab a mirror, and get sexploring.

Guys, here's a very important question:

If you answered yes, wonderful! If no, please read this horrifying story as a cautionary tale of why you should always take the recommended amount of any prescription or over-the-counter drug.

A 31-year-old man in New York developed a permanent red tint to his vision after taking too much sildenafil citrate, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. (It's commonly sold under the brand name Viagra.) His story was published this month in Retinal Cases & Brief Reports.

According to the report, the unidentified man drank a liquid form of sildenafil citrate directly from the bottle. He apparently disregarded the provided dispenser, which would have delivered the recommended 50mg dose.

It's unknown exactly how much of the medication he consumed, but shortly after, his vision developed a red tint and multicolored photopsias, or flashes of light. The flashes disappeared by the next day, but the red-tint remained. After two days, the patient sought treatment at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary urgent care clinic.

play

Scans of the patient’s eye taken during an exam three months after initial treatment shows thickening in the man’s eye.

(RETINAL CASES AND BRIEF REPORTS12:S33-S40, OCTOBER 2018.)

Doctors examined the man's eyes, and found he had permanent damage to the cells on his retina that are responsible for color. They ultimately diagnosed him with persistent retinal toxicity caused by the high dose of sildenafil citrate.

The patient was prescribed various steroid medications used to treat eye injuries, but the red tint has not subsided after more than a year. In the report, doctors noted that unknown contaminants could have caused toxicity, too, since the drug was purchased online.

play (GETTY IMAGESMORRISON1977)

Even if your medication comes from the pharmacy, the doctors say the case should be a warning against taking more than the recommended dose.

"People live by the philosophy that if a little bit is good, a lot is better. This study shows how dangerous a large dose of a commonly used medication can be," lead investigator Richard Rosen, MD, Director of Retina Services at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, said in a statement. "People who depend on colored vision for their livelihood need to realize there could be a long-lasting impact of overindulging on this drug."

Rosen explains that this is the first case that shows how excess sildenafil citrate could cause permanent retina damage. Prior research has shown that the medication can cause a temporary blue tinge to vision. More common side effects include headaches, bloody noses and vomiting.

8 reasons your balls hurt “Testicular pain is so common that it’s likely every guy, at some point in his life, will have experience with it,” says Jamin Brahmbhatt, M.D., co-director at The PUR Clinic, which specializes in urology and men’s health.

play 8 reasons your balls hurt (GETTY IMAGESTHOMAS NORTHCUT)

Even if you're fortunate enough to never get kicked in the balls, there are other reasons you might feel some soreness down there.

“Testicular pain is so common that it’s likely every guy, at some point in his life, will have experience with it,” says Jamin Brahmbhatt, M.D., co-director at The PUR Clinic, which specializes in urology and men’s health.

X

When you feel pain in your testicles, you might immediately think testicular cancer. But in fact, most cases of testicular cancer are painless - and are usually detected through a lump instead, Dr. Brahmbhatt says. And if you’re fearing STIs, you’re more likely to have burning during urination, although some degree of painful testes might be present.

So, then, what is causing your painful balls? Here are some reasons your junk could be in a funk - and when you should get that pain checked out.

Cause of Sore Testicles: Testicular Torsion

This particular ailment happens when your balls get twisted.

"Testicular torsion is caused when the spermatic cord that attaches the testicle to the body becomes twisted and cuts off the flow of blood to the testicle," Michael P. Zahalsky, MD, who specializes in Urology and is the founder of Z Urology in Coral Springs, Florida, previously told MensHealth.com. He compared it to picking an apple: "To pick the apple, you need to twist the stem until the apple comes off. That can happen with testicular torsion - it's twisted until the testicle dies."

Testicular torsion can happen in a number of ways, including when you're working out, having sex, or even sleeping. Besides pain and swelling, symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and a testicle in an unusual position, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Whatever the case, you should visit the doctor immediately if you suspect it's happening to you. In some cases, doctors can manually un-twist the testicles; in other cases, you may need surgery.

Cause of Sore Testicles: Kidney stones, Constipation, Hernia, or Stomach Issues

The nerves that lead to your balls come from many places in your abdomen, including the stomach, kidneys, and digestive tract. If you’re constipated and can’t poop, pressure from the unrelieved waste could be pressing on those nerves.

The same goes if you have a kidney stone working through your system, or if you have an upset stomach. If you have a hernia or have had hernia surgery, the nerves there could be inflamed, causing a reaction further south.

This all falls under the designation of “referred pain,” which means it isn’t about your balls at all, but that’s where the pain is ending up, Dr. Brahmbhatt says.

Cause of Sore Testicles: Vasectomy

Experiencing scrotal pain after a vasectomy - a surgical birth control procedure in which the duct that carries your sperm from your testicles to your urethra is sealed off - is super rare, but it can occur. In fact, according to the American Urological Association’s guidelines, chronic scrotal pain occurs in just 1 to 2 percent of men who get the procedure.

Experts aren’t sure what causes it, but it may have to do with damage to the nerve structures down there, researchers from Rush University Medical Center say.

“I don’t want to scare anyone away from having a vasectomy,” says Dr. Brahmbhatt. “But just be aware that it can happen. But it can also be corrected if it does.” That could mean another surgical procedure.

Cause of Sore Testicles: Hydrocele

play (GETTY IMAGESTHOR VERMIJLEN / EYEEM)

When you look at the anatomy of the testes, it’s basically just balls dangling on a couple of cords. Making up those cords are blood vessels, nerves, and tissue that allow for the dangle.

Everyone has some degree of fluid around the testicle and these cords, Dr. Brahmbhatt notes, but sometimes, that fluid balance gets out of whack. When there's too much fluid in the ball sac, you can end up with a hydrocele. The hydrocele itself typically isn't painful, but guys may feel pain from having a heavy, swollen scrotum, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Go see a doctor whenever you notice swelling in your balls. If it turns out to be a hydrocele, it might go away on its own within six months. In some cases, it could require surgery.

Cause of Sore Testicles: Varicocele

play (GETTY IMAGESTHOR VERMIJLEN / EYEEM)

A varicocele is the enlargement of veins in your scrotum - think of varicocele as spider veins for your balls. It’s not likely to cause pain as much as discomfort. There’s a feeling of fullness and a certain look to it, similar to a bag of worms, Dr. Brahmbhatt says.

The symptoms depend on which stage varicocele you have. Grade 3 varicoceles are largest and most noticeable, and will feel thick and lumpy. Grade 2 are less severe, though they still may feel a little ropey. Sometimes, you won’t even notice if you have a Grade 1 varicocele.

If you have a more severe varicocele, buildup of pressure in the veins can cause nagging scrotal discomfort, Paul Turek, M.D., a California-based urologist previously toldMensHealth.com.

For severe cases, you may need surgery, where your doctor will divert blood flow away from the damaged vein into functioning ones.

When to See a Doctor About Sore Testicles

play (getty)

For all of these issues, the answer to, “When should I see a doctor?” has to do with time and severity. Pain that fades quickly - for example, if your balls get twisted but quickly straighten out - isn’t much cause for concern, Dr. Brahmbhatt notes. But if you’re experiencing a high degree of pain instead of a dull ache, and it lasts for more than 15 minutes, he recommends a trip to the ER.

“If you wait too long, you could potentially lose the testicle,” he says. That would negatively affect your fertility. Also, the pain could be a huge warning sign of problems elsewhere in the body, such as kidney stones, bladder issues, or appendicitis, Dr. Brahmbhatt notes.

Even if you have an ache instead of shooting pain, or you’re noticing fluid collection, get it checked out.

Dr. Brahmbhatt also suggests doing a self-check monthly to detect any changes in your testes health. Basically, get to know your balls.

In fact, one survey of 544 men found that 7.3 percent of the time they had sex, the condom broke or slipped off.

If you find yourself in a situation where the condom breaks, don’t panic - take action. Here’s what you need to do.

1) If you haven't ejaculated yet and you notice that the condom broke, stop immediately and replace it with a new one.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

If you feel the condom break in the heat of the moment, you may be tempted to just ignore it and keep going. But if you can feel the condom break while you're having sex and you haven't ejaculated yet, stop immediately and remove it, then put on a new one.

2) If you've already ejaculated, go to the bathroom right away.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

If it wasn't until after sex that you realize the condom broke, go to the bathroom right away. “Theoretically, urinating afterwards might help to push out some pathogens, so there's no harm in doing that,” says Dr. Karen Brodman, a gynecologist in New York.

If your partner has a vagina, she should also urinate immediately and wash with warm soap and water. “Cleaning off ASAP may help decrease exposure to sperm and viruses," she says. And if you just had anal sex, the same applies: go to the bathroom and bear down until all fluids have been expelled from your rectum, then wash with warm soap and water.

But be warned: peeing and cleaning yourself after sex "certainly cannot be relied on to prevent infection or pregnancy,” she says. Sure, it may lessen the risk to a minor degree, but it does not eliminate it entirely.

3) If your partner has a vagina, go to the pharmacy to buy emergency contraception.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

To reduce the risk of pregnancy, your partner should act as quickly as possible. “If she is not using another contraception method, such as birth control pills, an IUD, or Nexplanon, then she should use emergency contraception,” Brodman says

Plan B is typically available over the counter without a prescription. It costs between $40 and $50, and it’s effective up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. “Basically, Plan B prevents the attachment of a fertilized egg to endometrial lining, but it can also prevent ovulation and may prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg,” Brodman says.

Your partner can also try ella, which is effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, but it's slightly more expensive and is typically only available via prescription, so it may be tough to find, says Brodman.

Lastly, your partner may want to consider getting a ParaGard, a copper IUD that is 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy "when inserted within 120 hours (5 days) after the accident, but it must be inserted by an MD (typically a GYN),” she says.

It's important to note that most emergency contraceptives are more effective the sooner you take them, so be sure to have your partner make a trip to the pharmacy or call her doctor right away. (It's also worth noting that it's simply good etiquette to accompany her to the pharmacy or even offer to pay for it - yes, even if it's a one-night stand.)

4) If you're concerned about HIV exposure, consider taking PeP.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

If you're worried about having been exposed to HIV, ask your doctor about PeP, or post-exposure prophylaxis (it's different from PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, which people must take consistently to prevent contracting HIV). When taken within 72 hours after HIV exposure, PeP is considerably effective (though not 100% effective) at preventing transmission, but you must take it once or twice daily for 28 days for it to work. Your doctor will help you determine if you're a good candidate.

5) Get tested for STIs.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

Take a deep breath: in most cases, there's no need to rush to the nearest clinic the very next day, says Brodman: “[I] don’t want people to think they must be seen on a Saturday or Sunday morning when most offices are closed.”

That said, you should try to get an STI test within the next 3-4 days after exposure; it's also a good idea to go to your doctor or to a clinic instead of doing an at-home test, which can sometimes yield inaccurate results.

When you arrive at your doctor's office or at a clinic, the doctor or nurse will usually "assess your risk of infection," Brodman advises. Typically, you'll be asked to fill out a questionnaire about your sexual history and provide a urine test, as well as a blood test if you're testing for STIs like HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and syphilis. If you had unprotected oral or anal sex, your doctor might ask for a throat swab or a rectal swab.

For most STI tests, you'll have to wait a few days to a week for results. Some clinics, however, do offer rapid HIV testing, which can offer results in up to 20 minutes. But note that the incubation period for HIV is typically one to four weeks, so "it may take time for infection to show up on a blood test," says Brodman.

If you test positive, "get treated and inform your partner" immediately, she says. If your results come back negative, your health care provider will likely urge you to get a follow-up test

6) Check your condoms.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

To prevent a condom from breaking again in the future, it's important to make sure you're storing and putting on condoms correctly. Well-endowed? Maybe your condoms are a bit snug. If you’re on the smaller side, perhaps they’re too big. Either way, your condom should fit. “If too small, there is a higher risk of breaking; if too big, there is a risk it will come off,” Brodman explains. (Here are a few condoms that you might like.)

You should also always make sure that your condoms aren't old or expired, as they tend to "degrade and weaken with time,” she says. If a condom is more than a few years old, you should probably toss it. Additionally, consider where you keep your condoms. If exposed to heat, they’ll break more easily, so don't keep them in a wallet in your sweaty back pocket. Instead, keep them in a cool place, like in a bedroom drawer, Brodman says.

7) Check your lube.

play (GETTY IMAGES)

If you use lube, be careful about what type you use, as some can break down condoms. “Make sure you are using latex-compatible lube, such as water-based lube, with latex condoms," says Brodman. "Oils like vegetable oil, coconut oil, and petroleum jelly will weaken and damage condoms." If you use latex condoms, try Wicked Aqua Based Water Lubricant in Unscented ($9.65, buy it here)

8) Make sure you're putting the condom on correctly.

This might sound obvious, but you should always double-check to make sure you're using the correct technique when putting onYou should be leaving room at the tip and putting it on on the right side up, and don’t open the package with your teeth or unroll the condom before putting it on. Review the situation and figure out what went wrong, and next time, take your time putting it on.

Curfew imposed on Nigerian city of Jos

    Ishaq Khalid

    BBC Africa, Abuja

    BBCCopyright: BBC

A dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed on the city of Jos, in Nigeria's central Plateau state, and its surrounding area following hours of ethnic and religious tension.

Angry youths protested against an attack by suspected cattle herders, who are predominately Muslim, on Friday morning.

They destroyed properties belonging to Muslims, which sparked more tension and skirmishes between the two sides. Many shops remain closed.

Plateau state commissioner of information, Yakubu Datti, told the BBC the curfew was put in place to prevent a further escalation of violence

The skirmishes in Jos, the Plateau state capital, were in response to an attack on Thursday by suspected cattle herders on a predominantly Christian community on the outskirts of the city.

Gunmen killed at least four people and wounded around two people, a spokesman for the special military task force in the area, Umar Adamu, told the BBC.

The attack on Thursday is believed to be in retaliation to the killing of a herder the day before.

The area has a decades-long history of violence between settled farming communities and nomadic cattle herders competing for land.

These tit-for-tat clashes have erupted into inter-communal warfare, killing thousands in 2017.

Kenyan denied permit to head Tanzania Vodacom

    Athuman Mtulya

    BBC Africa

Tanzanian authorities have denied a Kenyan corporate manager, Sylvia Mulinge, a work permit to head the country’s biggest telecom company.

Vodacom Tanzania, which is a subsidiary of UK’s Vodafone, appointed Ms Mulinge as CEO five months ago but she had to apply for a permit to work in the country.

After months of silence and speculation, Vodacom Tanzania announced today that Ms Mulinge was denied the permit by the country’s labour commissioner.

“Naturally we are disappointed and regret the labour commissioner’s decision and we will be engaging with the authorities. We are confident that Vodacom Tanzania has a strong management team in place to lead the company effectively until the search for a suitable candidate is finalised,” Vodacom Tanzania chairman was quoted as saying in the statement.

Ms Mulinge was on Thursday reemployed at Kenya’s largest telecommunication company Safaricom.

This incident comes in the middle of a trade war between Kenya and Tanzania, the two biggest economies of the East African Community (EAC).

The neighbouring countries are hitting each other with tariffs on a select number of goods, Tanzania’s The Citizen newspaper reported on Friday.

Last year, Tanzania seized and auctioned cattle from Kenya with the country’s President John Magufuli saying Tanzania was not Kenya’s grazing ground.

In 2015, Kenya banned Tanzanian vehicles from accessing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and Tanzania hit back by cutting the frequency of Kenya Airways' flights to the country by 60%.

The spat was resolved by President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and the Tanzania’s former President Jakaya Kikwete.

Bids in for Ivory Coast's biggest cocoa producer

Defaulting cocoa farmers have made Ivory Coast's banks worriedImage caption: Defaulting cocoa farmers have made Ivory Coast's banks worried

Creditors of the biggest cocoa exporter in Ivory Coast, which went bankrupt in July, will decide on Monday which company will be allowed to buy its assets.

Three international agri-industry companies are reported to be interested in buying the operations of SAF Cacoa, which was liquidated following an order from the Ivorian Cocoa Board, the CCC.

Ivory Coast is the world's biggest exporter of cocoa.

SAF Cacoa, which purchased up to 200,000 tonnes of cocoa beans every year, collapsed owing about $143m (£109m) to Ivory Coast's Cocoa Board and double that to banks in the country.

The American agriculture giant Cargill, plus its rivals Wilmar, which is based in Singapore, and Touton of France, are considered the serious bidders by the Ivorian authorities to acquire the firm's assets.

It's thought that Wilmar and Touton are interested in SAF's Choco-Ivoire grinding plant, as well as its other cocoa and coffee factories.

The U.S group Cargill is most interested in large storage warehouses.

The cocoa board and other creditors want a swift decision on a sale, so that banks can be reimbursed quickly.

Exporters of cocoa are major borrowers in Ivory Coast, but a wave of defaults has raised fears of the banking sector being destabilised.

The senators were reportedly set to get a daily allowance of 100,000 Kenya shillings ($990; £760) during the trip.

The daily allowance for volleyball players is $37, the Star reports.

The report of the now cancelled trip comes two months after a group of 20 MPs went to Russia in June to watch the football World Cup.

The lawmakers who went to Russia, ostensibly to learn how Kenya could host an event as big as the World Cup, presented a report to parliament in August which the Standard newspaper reported had mostly "been plagiarised without a whiff of attribution".

Kenyan MPs are believed to be among the best paid in the world but last year they got a 15% pay cut reducing their salary to $6,100 a month.

Zimbabwe ministers given ultimatum for new laws

Emmerson Mnangagwa was elected president on 30 JulyImage caption: Emmerson Mnangagwa was elected president on 30 July

Zimbabwe’s speaker of parliament, Jacob Mudenda, has given government ministers 30 days to submit draft legislation in line with the 2013 constitution or face censure.

Five years after Zimbabweans voted to pass a new constitution several outdated pieces of legislation remain on the statute books.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa's party appears to be injecting some urgency to scrap outdated laws.

Mr Mudenda has warned ministers they will be summoned to answer to parliament if they do not meet the deadline to produce draft legislation for some 30 laws prioritised by the president in his state of the nation address.

In 2013, Zimbabweans voted overwhelmingly to overhaul the country’s constitution, strengthening human rights and capping presidential powers..

Some of the major pieces of legislation highlighted by Mr Mnangagwa will decentralise political power, strengthen child rights and allow dual citizenship.

Critics however say the government continues to drag its feet on other draconian laws affecting freedom of speech and association.

Mr Mnangagwa became president last November after his predecessor, Robert Mugabe, was forced to resign. He then went on to win July's presidential election.

Five people in Ethiopia have been charged with terrorism in connection with what prosecutors say was an attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Two people were killed and more than a 100 injured in a grenade attack in June at a rally in Addis Ababa in support of Mr Abiy.

Prosecutors allege the plot was masterminded by an Ethiopian woman based in Kenya. She was not in court.

The prosecution said the attack was carried out by members of Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, the Oromo, because they believed Mr Abiy would not act in their interests.

Mr Abiy is himself an Oromo.

Eyewitness Nteiro Elyon Elijah told me the fire started around 18:45 local time (17:45 GMT), but it was not clear what caused it.

The suspicion is that it was set off by a spark form an electrical fault, he added.

Mr Elijah also said that the fire service did not turn up despite traders making several phone calls.

People who live in the area and members form a church called Living Faith, which shares a fence with the market, pumped water from their storage tanks to help put out the fire.

BBC Tigirinya unveils poetry competition winner

    Biemnet SemereCopyright: Biemnet Semere

Biemnet Semere is the winner of BBC Tigrinya's inaugural poem competition.

The 41-year-old's poem - Just Call Me By My Mother's Name! - impressed the judges with its quality of language, and conformity to Tigrinya poetry rules in terms of rhyme, rhythm and theme.

It explores how some young men betray young women after impregnating them.

The competition was launched on 30 July to revive, celebrate and enrich local poetry.

Siltan Haylay from Ethiopia, and Solomon Gegrekirstons, an Eritrean living in South Africa, were first and second runners up respectively.

Here's a translation of the winning poem:

Just Call Me By My Mother's Name!

Birth pangs, and a tragic end

When two hearts refused to blend

I heard the cry of my dear mother

Mixed with sighs for unfaithful father

Midwives at work, unable to notice

The sound of pain and pure injustice

Push! they shout and press and squeeze

A life of lost love and broken dreams

How she sang with love and danced with joy

Trusting a love that was only a ploy

    Memory lane strewn with sorrow

    Bitter tears starting to flow

    And then came along

    The Good Lord

He made the pain to go away

And allowed me to see the day

Well, let me stop here and just close

    the story

For too many are my mother's woes

People talk of customs and laws

Just any father from friends and foes

But my wish is to have a father of my own

And not one who sires and is speedily gone

But again why should I need a father

When I am alreay born and rightly here!

Well, let me tell you a little secret

To love someone who has no respect

For me and for all the rest

Is to be feared like a pest

It is all the same to me folks, all the same

You can just call me by my mother's name!!!

US calls Cameroon to hold soldiers accountable

The US has called on Cameroon authorities to hold soldiers, revealed by the BBC's investigative unit Africa Eye to be behind atrocities against civilians, to account, VOA reports.

Pentagon spokeswoman Maj Sheryll Klinkel said the US military was working with the State Department to "ensure the government of Cameroon holds accountable any individuals found to be responsible".

BBC Africa Eye's investigation looked into a horrifying video which had been circulating on social media.

It showed two women and two young children being led away at gunpoint by a group of Cameroonian soldiers. The captives are blindfolded, forced to the ground, and shot 22 times.

The investigation revealed where the incident happened, when it happened, and who is responsible for the killing.

The government of Cameroon initially dismissed the video as “fake news” but subsequently arrested some of the soldiers captured in the video.

The US has about 300 military personnel in Cameroon as part of an international effort to stop the spread of violent extremism in West Africa, VOA reports.

Kenyan tea workers take UK company to court

    Ferdinand Omondi

    BBC Africa, Nairobi

Tea workers in Kenya have filed a case against multi-national company Unilever in the UK's Supreme Court for allegedly failing to protect them during the violence that followed the 2007 elections in which over 1,000 people were killed.

They say Unilever failed to respect its own human rights policy during the attacks, a claim the UK-Dutch company denies.

According to court documents, seven Unilever workers were killed and 56 women were raped in the ethnic violence.

In a letter to Unilever CEO Paul Polman, the workers say local management put workers at risk by ignoring death threats reported by employees, including those from co-workers.

Many employees, who came from other areas of the country, fled the tea plantation in western Kenya for six months, during which time they claim Unilever stopped their salaries.

But Unilever insists every employee was compensated, and that it gave significant support to workers during that period, including more than $500,000 (£382,000) to help affected families.

10 kissing positions to take your foreplay to a whole new level

As you get older, the rush of being kissed often falls to the shadows, as the spotlight turns to, well, getting laid. But kissing is still an important part of the sexual repertoire.

Remember the days of first base? Those late nights sitting on the couch with your crush after your parents went to bed, hoping he’d lean over in the middle of She’s All That and just plant one on you?

As you get older, the rush of being kissed often falls to the shadows, as the spotlight turns to, well, getting laid. But kissing is still an important part of the sexual repertoire.

“First of all, kissing is sex. It is one of the many ways we express ourselves sexually,” says Suzanne Rapley, Ph.D., AASECT-certified sex therapist.

X

Not to mention, the lips and mouth are "loaded with nerve endings," says Emily deAyala, AASECT-certified sex therapist, "which makes the sensation of kissing so pleasurable."

She adds that: "Many people are guilty of jumping into intercourse too quickly, but spending more time making out can do wonders to stimulate sexual pleasure and improve intimacy in the relationship."

If you’re ready to take your kissing game to a whole new level, there are some hot, expert-recommended kissing positions you need to try.

1. The Side-By-Side Kiss

How it works: Sit next to each other on the couch, a bench, or bed. Tilt your neck and head to face each other and slowly lean in. Your partner can take one hand and cup the side of your face, or vice versa.

Why it’s great: This is the makeout position that probably started it all back in your teenaged days. It’s innocent enough, but with not-so-subtle undertones of further exploration. It’s the perfect position to throw a little fuel on the fire.

2. The Chest-To-Chest Kiss

How to do it: This is one of the most basic, but passionate stances for a solid makeout sesh. Stand facing each other, with your arms around your partner's neck and their hands around your waist.

Why it’s great: With your chests touching, you will not only become exceptionally close physically, but the connection will be crazy-intimate.

3. The Gentle Hickey

How to do it: Going full hickey might not be the most age appropriate (or fun, tbh). That said, a gentle sucking and nibbling of the neck from below the ear to the clavicle is a hot compromise.

Why it’s great: This makeout position stimulate the erogenous zones in the neck, along with the nerve endings in the lips, sending sexy chills down both of your spines and setting the mood for what comes next.

4. The Woman-On-Top Kiss

How to do it: Have your partner lie flat on their back while you straddle their waist with your legs. Lean your weight into your partner's chest and kiss from above.

Why it’s great: You’re already in a highly sexual position, which will send both your brain (and genitals) into overdrive. The fact that you’re leaving it at kissing is incredibly erotic-and makes for excellent foreplay.

5. The Tongues-Only Kiss

How it works: Simple enough. Touch tongues with each other and see how long you can leave the lips out of it.

Why it’s great: This is one of the most intimate kissing positions. It might take some getting used to, but it’s a fun and sexy way to play with your partner as you test your comfort zones together.

6. The 'Gotta Have You' Kiss

How it works: This is a passionate throwdown-whether it's up against a wall, sweeping items off the desk, or falling into bed together. It’s fast, bold, and full of fire.

Why it’s great: So much of romance is about spontaneity and seizing the moment. This makeout position is full of energy and surprises, leaving the hands open to wander freely.

7. The Facing-Spoon Kiss

How it works: Both of you lie on your sides facing each other, with your arms wrapped around each other and your pelvises touching. It’s similar to chest to chest, only horizontal.

Why it’s great: This a great kissing position for the end of the evening, or first thing in the morning. It is a comfortable, relaxed position, but intimate enough where all the right parts are touching, without it necessarily leading to sex (although, hey, no one’s stopping you).

8. The 'Spider Man' Kiss

How it works: Similar to woman on top, except you're facing the opposite way, with your chin aligned to your partner's nose, upside down. Travel your way down to their neck and chest, if the mood strikes.

Why it’s great: This is a great kissing position to give you a feeling of control while you smooch. Plus, it places your breasts strategically for your partner to do some exploring of their own.

9. The 'Anywhere But The Mouth' Kiss

How it works: The face and neck have so many erogenous zones, and it's fun to tease a little leading up to a full-on mouth kiss. Start with the neck, earlobes, clavicle, corners of the lips, ear lobes...get creative.

Why it’s great: It’s the ultimate buildup to the ultimate buildup. If you thought kissing was amazing foreplay, you’ll love the foreplay to kissing.

10. The Single-Lip Kiss

How it works: Use your two lips to focus on your partner's lower lip. Lick it softly with your tongue, gently nibble it, or suck softly on it using your lips.

Why it’s great: It is incredibly erotic, and such a tease. You’ll leave your partner begging for the full effect.

US mid-terms: Hackers expose 'staggering' voter machine flaws

Voting machines pose "serious risks" to US security, hackers are warning.

A report outlines major flaws in voting hardware, weeks before US mid-term elections.

One ballot machine, used in 23 US states, carries a cybersecurity flaw that was reported over a decade ago, the hackers claim.

An expert warned that lessons would need to be learned if the UK adopts electronic voting systems.

In August, the Def Con conference in Las Vegas ran a "Voting Village", where participants were encouraged to uncover flaws in US election infrastructure by hacking into various computer systems.

The organisers of the conference on Thursday released a 50-page report on their findings.

They describe the number and severity of flaws in voting equipment as "staggering".

"The problems outlined in this report are not simply election administration flaws that need to be fixed for efficiency's sake, but rather serious risks to our critical infrastructure and thus national security," the report claims.

More than 30 voting machines and other pieces of equipment were made available to attendees of the conference, including the M650 electronic ballot scanner, which is currently used by 23 US states.

The report says vulnerabilities mean the M650 can be remotely hacked.

A design flaw reported as far back as 2007 was also found in the model tested during the conference.

The organisers of the conference argue that because the unit is designed to process a high volume of ballots, hacking one of the machines could enable an attacker to "flip the electoral college and determine the outcome of a presidential election?".

The makers of the M650 system, Election Systems & Software (ES&S), told the Wall Street Journal that because the voting machine uses paper ballots, votes can be audited.

The company also said "the security protections on the M650 are strong enough to make it extraordinarily difficult to hack in a real-world environment".

In August, four US Senators signed a letter to ES&S, which said they were "disheartened" that the company had chosen to dismiss the hacker's demonstrations.

ES&S responded, saying forums open to anonymous hackers "may be a green light for foreign intelligence operatives" and should be viewed with caution.

Reprogrammed smart cards

Other machines tested include the AccuVote TSx, currently used by 18 US states. The system includes a smart card reader for users to cast votes, which the report says can be easily disconnected to "disrupt the election" process.

Attendees of the conference were also able to reprogramme voting smart cards wirelessly, using mobile phones.

On Tuesday, Republican Senator James Lankford said an election security bill, known as the Secure Elections Act, would not be passed by Congress ahead of the mid-term elections in November.

Earlier this year, an amendment for $250m (£192m) to increase spending on election security measures was blocked by Republican senators.

"There is a history of disclosed vulnerabilities taking years to properly mitigate, and seemingly no great appetite for a national security standard for voting machines," security expert Davey Winder told the BBC.

"We need to be learning lessons here so that when, rather than if, the UK adopts electronic voting systems, we are ready to make sure the implementation is a secure one."

A spokesperson for the UK's Electoral Commission told the BBC: "Any change to the system of voting would require a pilot, which would be carried out by the Cabinet Office."

A National Park Is Airlifting Hundreds of Mountain Goats That Have Gone Crazy for Human Pee.

Mountain goats in Olympic National Park are obsessed with human urine and are now a public nuisance.

Image: National Park Service

Outdoor enthusiasts have a storied history of wrecking nature with their excrement and now, hikers are apparently driving mountain goats crazy with pee.

At Olympic National Park in the state of Washington, hundreds of mountain goats are being airlifted by helicopter and moved to forests in the North Cascades. The reason? They’re too thirsty for human piss.

According to the national park, the fluffy ungulate has begun harassing visitors at campsites “where they persistently seek salt and minerals from human urine.” Goats are known to “paw and dig” where people have relieved themselves, causing the animals to become a nuisance.

The park estimates that 375 goats will be relocated this way, according to its final management plan. It’s possible that between 275 and 325 goats will be “lethally removed” by shooting them with rifles over three to five years, though the park says capture and release is its top priority. (“There is no intention to leave rotting carcasses within sight or smell of visitors,” the park clarified.)

Read more: Bad Goats Removed by Helicopter

Successfully captured goats are blindfolded, tagged, and fitted with GPS collars. Once loaded into crates, they’re transported in pairs to nine release sites throughout Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, and on land owned by Seattle Public Utilities.

“The plan is to reach a zero population level of mountain goats in the park and adjacent Olympic National Forest lands…[removing] approximately 90 percent of the projected 2018 mountain goat population, or approximately 625 to 675 mountain goats,” the plan states.

Mountain goat removal project area. Image: Olympic National Park

Mountain goats are attracted to sources of salt and minerals to supplement their diet. And in Olympic National Park, where the goats are not a native species, these nutrients are harder to come by.

Yet, while normally shy, mountain goats have become habituated to humans. Many hikers are tempted to feed the animals from their salty palms. Urinating on trailsides is also discouraged, since it causes goats to associate people with their sodium-rich pee. (“Never urinate within 50 yards of a hiking trail,” the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife warns.)

In 2010, a 63-year-old man was gored by an aggressive ram and died in the park.

Authorities have tried to control mountain goat numbers before, removing more than 500 during the 1980s, and even using a border collie to herd them away from visitors. The animals are unable to be sterilized, since no approved chemical contraception exists. The park is unable to introduce predators, such as gray wolves, to eat them, as they are “not effective predators on mountain goats” and would negatively impact other prey animals, such as elk and deer. Hunting within the park is also illegal.

Several alternatives were considered by Olympic National Park. Doing nothing, for instance, focusing instead “on preventing unacceptable mountain goat behavior,” the plan states. But this scenario would have ultimately caused goat numbers to increase.

The relocation project is being led by the National Park Service and the USDA Forest Service. It was developed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife with assistance from the National Park Service Environmental Quality Division, and input from local tribes and residents.

Similar, pee-related problems have also been reported in Montana’s Glacier National park.

Mountain goats were introduced to the area during the 1920s and have colonized the entire region. Here, they pose a threat to vegetation, cause soil erosion, and compete with native wildlife.

The goats will be relocated to the North Cascades where they are a native species.

NASA solves mystery of cigar-shaped UFO, believed to carry alien life

Scientists have uncovered the truth about a mysterious space rock called Oumuamua which has been hurtling through Earth’s solar system and was spotted last year.

A group of acclaimed astronomers, including members from NASA, the European Space Agency and the German Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, released a report this week on the origins of the cigar-shaped asteroid which was first observed in October 2017.

The name Oumuamua is Hawaiian for “messenger from afar arriving first” and was named by the site who first spotted it.

According to the report, “a fast moving object on an unbound orbit was discovered close to the Earth” by a high-powered telescope, located in Hawaii.

The report claims Oumuamua is a metallic or rocky object, approximately 400 metres in length and about 40 metres wide.

It has a “comet-like density” and a dark red surface.

“(The red surface suggests) either an organic-rich surface like that of comets and outer solar system asteroids, or a surface containing minerals with nanoscale iron, such as the dark side of Saturn’s moon Iapetus,” the report said.

The report suggested Oumuamua left its home millions of years ago and was likely sent on its lonely journey when it was “ejected during planet formation and migration” and has been linked to four possible star systems.

It was also calculated that Oumuamua moved faster than the existing laws of celestial mechanics.

The report has been accepted into The Astrophysical Journal.

The discovery of Oumuamua sparked international debate when it was first discovered, as scientists struggled to explain what exactly the long, thin asteroid was and why it was flying so close to Earth.

The discovery even prompted suggestions that the rock was actually an alien spaceship or probe, used to explore our solar system.

But one fact has remained uncontended: Oumuamua is the first object ever observed travelling into our solar system from deep space.

The report found that Oumuamua is likely “one of many” interstellar objects that pass through Earth’s solar system on a regular basis.

Rattlesnake emerged from water in Florida, beachgoers say.

Snakes swimming in North Carolina flood waters

Griff Jenkins spots a snake in the flood waters while reporting on Florence.

Florida beachgoers spotted a rather unusual creature Tuesday emerging from the ocean: a possible diamondback rattlesnake.

Photos captured by local resident Rhonda Saunders show the serpent emerging from the water onto the Pensacola Beach.

The snake appeared to be “exhausted” and “trying to keep its head above the water,” Saunders told the Pensacola News Journal, adding a shocked crowd began to surround the creature. It's unclear where the snake came from.

'TIME CAPSULE' WARSHIP WRECK DISCOVERED

Local animal control officials were called and the snake was eventually removed.

"[An animal control officer] scooped him up with a long-handled net, and dropped him into a carrier," Saunders told the Pensacola News Journal.

“Not much fight left in him,” she said of the snake.

While many beachgoers said the serpent was likely a diamondback rattlesnake, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was unable to formally identify the snake based off photos alone, biologists with the organization told the newspaper.

3,500-YEAR-OLD BRONZE HAND UNEARTHED, MAY HAVE BEEN 'BRONZE AGE CYBORG'

Diamondback rattlers are capable of swimming, according to Reptiles magazine. These serpents are the largest venomous snakes in North America, National Geographic reported, noting they “generally live in dry, pine flatwoods, sandy woodlands, and coastal scrub habitats from southern North Carolina to Florida and west to Louisiana.”

Rhonda Saunders was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Fox News on Thursday.

12 Fascinating Facts About Your Favorite Foods.

You are what you eat, is the weird half-truth that is spat out again and again. Luckily, it’s not entirely accurate, because otherwise we’d all be mint fudge chocolate chip ice cream, smokehouse BBQ, and meat lovers pizza. What is true is that what we put into our bodies dramatically effects the way it operates. From our thought processes to our fitness level; even our sex drive is influenced heavily by all we consume. Yet, most of us don’t have the first idea what we’re putting into our bodies. And the truth is, what we don’t know might be hurting us.

Processed foods are known to generally be bad for people, since the further one moves away from nature, the fewer nutrients we receive with every swallow. Then again, even in the natural world there are some strange additives that we might not be too keen on filling our gullets with. Sometimes interesting, sometimes revolting, sometimes enticing, here’s 12 fascinating facts about foods we eat every day.

Oreo Filling

via sassyradish.com

The second best creamy goo in the world – behind Nutella of course – is Oreo’s cream. Smooth and sweet, it makes the otherwise ordinary cookies with the cult symbols imprinted on them a special kind of delicious. That signature milkiness could be attributed to actual milk, and sometimes it has a cream cheese base, but most often, Oreo’s cookie filling is made mostly of Crisco. The popular pan greaser has such a delightful consistency that Nabisco decided to add a load of sugar to the fat and dunk it in milk.

Gummy Candies

via stuffpoint.com

Vegetarians and vegans are already hip to this lovely fact: Most anything made with standard gelatin is constructed out of the skin and bones shaved off of slaughtered animals, then rendered into the chewy goodness we all enjoy. Loads of sugar is naturally part of the recipe as well, but what’s really important are the colorful dyes. They make the tub of boiling skin and bone look cheery and edible, to say nothing of utterly hilarious when made into an erotic shape.

Twinkies Taste

via spoonuniversity.com

The little, yellow, indestructible, undigestable snack cakes are certainly loaded with fat of questionable origins, but that’s not strange. Every fatty sack of deliciousness has a shady backstory. What is interesting is that Twinkies didn’t always taste like Twinkies. Prior to the second world war – WWII: Nazi Boogaloo – they were banana flavored. During the fighting, banana trade was brought almost wholly to a halt, which forced Hostess to change the taste, since it needed to keep making money off heart disease and diabetes. Ultimately, the vague yellow cream cake is what was settled on, based largely around what supplies were available at the time.

Bananas

via quirkyscience.com

Speaking of the yellow fruit, it’s good to note that a bushel of bananas is called a “hand.” A single banana is also known as a “finger.”

Olive Oil

via healthfacts.ng

It’s easy to believe that olive oil shouldn’t have too many problems behind the scenes. After all, you get some olives, you milk the oil out, bottle, sell, and repeat. But why do that when you can use any kind of oil, so long as you can pass it off as Olive? The entire olive oil industry is only slightly more corrupt than Big Tobacco, and has been described as “comparable to cocaine trafficking, with none of the risks,” by a European Union official. Only about 30% of the “olive oil” on the shelves is actually what it says.

Orange Juice

via reddit.com

As the world moves toward a more organic future, people are taking stock of what they eat and drink. This has led many to seek out more “honest” 100% juices. Among the most popular is orange juice, the beloved drink of Piko Taro. Names like Tropicana and Simply Orange have been touting their “not from concentrate” juices as superior. While they do actually come from oranges, the flavor doesn’t. All that citrus goodness is completely manufactured and comes from sugars mixed in.

Bread

via cooking.nytimes.com

Anyone who’s ever whipped up a loaf of home-baked bread is likely aware that it tends to turn to mold many times faster than stuff that’s store bought. The reason is preservatives, as anyone could have guessed. But the particular preservative in bread is what’s interesting. It’s an amino acid called “L-cysteine” that is found in hog and human hair, cow horns, and duck feathers. It’s an oily liquid similar to the grease on your scalp, though you can’t taste that when eating a ball of Wonder Bread.

Vanilla

via topfoodfacts.com

As with olive oil, vanilla should be an easy ride. Get the vanilla beans, crush them up, milk them out, grind them up, or ferment them until you get what you need. In some cases, that’s exactly how it works. In cases of synthetic vanilla, the truth is a little more ick-inspiring. The taste and smell of many vanilla-flavored items comes from the anal glands of beavers. It’s a thick, brown substance called castoreum which melds together urine and secretions from their anal and castor glands. If you doubt, one sniff under a beaver’s tail will reveal the baked-in truth.

Shredded Cheese

via southernfoodways.org

Pre-shredded cheese operates differently than cheese you shred at home. A clump of freshly grated Colby is a sticky mass, but when it comes out of a store-bought bag, it pours easily and moves without clotting. That bit of marketable magic is cellulose, known to most of us as wood pulp. That mildly gritty consistency of pre-shredded cheese it flecks of timber mixed in for a more pulpy nacho.

Milt

via tomokoimadedyen.com

This is an FYI for travelers who’ve never heard of the delicacy milt. It’s fish sperm, so eat at your own risk.

Ranch Dressing

via foodnetwork.com

Titanium is a marvelous metal. It can stand up to abuse, patinas beautifully over time, and is light enough for any EDC item in your repertoire. But, titanium dioxide, a molecule with both Ti and O atoms is a white powder that is mixed into ranch dressing – among other white foods – to make it look cleaner and more appetizing. There’s no cause for it other than pure manipulation of human buying practices.

Jelly Beans

via wallpaperup.com

While any Jelly Beans made with gelatin suffer from the same issue as gummy candies, they also have another dire ingredient: insect secretions. That shiny shellac on the outside, that makes the beans glimmer enticingly, is pulled from the stuff that oozes out of the Kerria lacca insect.

A man who was born without a penis fell into a coma for five days after having sex for first time.

Andrew Wardle, 45, was fitted with a £50,000 bionic penis after an intensive, 10-hour surgery. He has described the appendage as ‘ridiculously big’, and has said he and his girlfriend, Fedra Fabian, are delighted with the results.

However, just a few days after having sex for the first time, Fedra found Andrew collapsed on the floor. She rushed him to hospital where he remained in a coma for five days.

Andrew’s publicist, Barry Tomes, told MailOnline:

He had a fever for days and was vomiting. They thought he had a neurovirus.

He was supposed to be catching a train down to London to do an interview with This Morning. But Fedra rang to say she had found him unconscious. She was terrified. She has no family here to rely on.

They spent the next five days in limbo. He was so ill they couldn’t do any scans. They even tested for pancreatic cancer but thankfully it wasn’t.

It’s been quite terrifying. Their biggest worry was that the damage had been caused by having sex.

Fortunately, the issue was not caused because of the couple having sex, but was caused by ‘a gall bladder issue’, for which Andrew is now receiving treatment.

It’s been three months since Andrew underwent the surgery to be fitted with a penile implant. He had to live with an erection for ten days before the implant could be deflated, and had to wait a further six weeks before having sex.

Andrew was born a rare condition called bladder exstrophy, which can affect one in every 40,000 people.

Three months after a number of operations, including one to construct Andrew a new bladder, Andrew was able to use his ‘bionic penis’ for the first time.

Speaking to The Sun, Andrew said:

Fedra had booked a romantic trip to Amsterdam for my birthday, but I felt that would have been too much pressure.

I had to test out the function every morning and night and leave it erect for 20 minutes.

So, one morning, two days before we went away, it just happened. It was nice and natural — and that’s how I wanted it to be.

After what Fedra and I have been through, it’s the cherry on the cake.

Surgeons used skin, muscles and nerves from Andrew’s left arm to construct the penis, as well as veins from his right leg.

Andrew also thanked surgeon David Ralph and his team for the hard work.

He said:

I’m just looking forward to having a fresh start. It’s like I’ve been through a war and I’m just healing and getting my head straight. I owe it to my amazing surgeons to go out and enjoy my life.

I want to thank everyone past and present in the NHS who has got me to this point in my life – I would not be here without you today.

Andrew is receiving treatment for the gall bladder complications, and will soon be on the road to recovery.

Lil Wayne Finally Releases Tha Carter V

Getty

Three years since his last album, and seven years since the last Carter album, Lil Wayne has finally released his much anticipated Tha Carter V.

The new album features guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj and XXXTentacion, as well as others. The last track, Let It All Work Out, also features a sample from the Mercury Prize-winning Sampha.

Tha Carter V has been highly anticipated since Wayne announced it in 2012, following the release and success of 2011’s Tha Carter IV. The record began in 2004, when Wayne was just 22, but it’s release was delayed for over five years due to issues with his label.

Universal Music

The fifth instalment was then supposed to be out in 2014, but days before its release the rapper announced his label boss had ‘refused to release’ the record. Taking to Twitter at the time, Wayne said he was ‘a prisoner and so is my creativity’.

Then, in January 2015, Lil Wayne sued the label, Cash Money, demanding $51 million and the right to cut his ties with the record label, as Rolling Stone reports.

In response, Lil Wayne released his Free Weezy Album through Tidal in an attempted dig at his label Cash Money. The label hit back, however, allegedly trying to sue Tidal for $50 million over the project, though the lawsuit was later dropped.

Earlier this year, the rapper revealed to Billboard that the legal disputes between himself and the label had been settled for an undisclosed sum, meaning the path was finally clear to release Tha Carter V.

As part of the new deal, Wayne is now the sole owner of Young Money Records, his own imprint, as well as maintaining a relationship with Universal Music Group.

The Carter series of albums have been Lil Wayne’s defining records. In 2008, Tha Carter III became the last rap album to sell 1 million copies in the US in a single week. Tha Carter IV missed that mark by less than 40,000 copies in 2011.

In 2012, when he announced the fifth instalment, Lil Wayne suggested it would be his last, and that he’d probably retire after its release. However, he has now said: ‘I do think about retirement. I think about how I don’t think I ever will.’

Getty

Within the new album, the 36-year-old rapper also addresses the time he sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound when has was just 12. In the past he has called this an accident, but now suggests it was a suicide attempt.

On new track Let It All Work Out he says:

I shot it, and I woke up with blood all around me
It’s mine, I didn’t die but as I was dying
God came to my side and we talked about it
He sold me another life and he made a prophet

Wayne had previously alluded to this in his verses on the Free Weezy Album track London Roads, and in his feature on Solange’s track Mad.

Now, however, he is focussed on new music and, of course, his role as a father of four.

He said:

My four jewels – when I FaceTime one of them, man, everything goes away.

Welcome back, Lil Wayne.

Dad Shares Shocking Aftermath Of Hurricane Florence After Evacuating His Kids

When Hurricane Florence ripped through the Carolinas over the last couple of weeks, thousands of homes were tragically flooded and wrecked.

It was a devastating tropical cyclone that dropped a total of 35.93 inches of rain in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, becoming the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the state, and eighth wettest overall in US history.

39-year-old Gerald Thomas, from Wilmington NC, sent his three children away during the storm, but chose to stay in his house, and took some shocking footage of the aftermath.

Here are some of Gerald’s videos:

Guy Shares Shocking Aftermath Of Hurricane Florence

Talking about his experience during the hurricane, Gerald told UNILAD:

My first thought was that I’ve never seen a category one hurricane do this much damage.

I woke up to falling trees all around me. One tree almost took out our house.

I felt lucky, and glad my kids were not there. Several tornados touched down around us.

Our cell phone would alert us every 30 minutes. I can’t count how many times we hid in the bathroom for safety.

During the storm me and my girlfriend were putting buckets and towels underneath all the leaks and running to the bathroom every time we heard a tornado alert.

UNILAD

Gerald took a number of videos during and in the days following the hurricane, the most shocking of which showed their main road completely collapsed and shattered into pieces.

His other videos showed a petrol station that had been completely destroyed by the winds and rainfall, as well as huge queues of people and cars in need of gas and food.

There appeared to be only one petrol station still intact, meaning that hundreds of cars had to queue for a long time to fill-up.

Despite the dental technician’s house being subject to leaks, he said he was actually very lucky that a tree didn’t hit their house.

UNILAD

He explained what happened to the supplies in his local area:

The gas lines were insane. I never saw gas lines so long. I’m talking four hours to wait for gas.

Some people ran out of gas before they were able to get to the pump. Grocery stores were running out of food.

No water, no meats only canned goods. Our power was off for 120 hours.

Power has now been restored in our area and there is a big clean up ahead of us.

UNILAD

The devastation has really brought the community together, and Gerald said ‘neighbours are helping neighbours’, and that they ‘remain strong and will continue to keep [their] heads up’.

In their area, Gerald said he had experienced many hurricanes before but Florence was ‘unique’ because it ‘crossed the state at three to five mph’.

Gerald posted a video of the cracked road to Twitter on September 16 and many commenters shared their story of Hurricane Florence’s path of destruction.

UNILAD

One commenter wrote:

My parents are down there and my dad shop is destroyed with a microburst in the Murrayville area.

Flooding in their yard higher than I’ve ever seen it after being through hurricanes there for 25 years. What road is this? Stay safe!

Our thought are with all of those affected by Hurricane Florence.

Teenage drug dealer jailed after schoolgirl ecstasy death

A teenage drug dealer has been jailed for a year after selling ecstasy to a 14-year-old girl who died after taking it.

Thomas Lamont, 18, sold six tablets to Zoe Bremner in June last year.

The schoolgirl became ill after taking two of the pills and was pronounced dead after an ambulance was called to a flat in Glasgow's Cowcaddens.

Lamont, from the Knightswood area, previously admitted being concerned in the supply of ecstasy (MDMA).

Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC said the sentence would have been 14 months, but for the guilty plea.

Co-accused Stephen Selkirk, 18, joined him in the dock after admitting the same charge.

He pled guilty to dealing the drug to four teenagers in April and May last year.

Selkirk, from Yoker, Glasgow, was jailed for 14 months, reduced from 16 months.

Image captionZoe Bremner and two friends bought six pills from Thomas Lamont

The court earlier heard how Zoe and two friends had been at a house party before heading to another property.

Prosecutor Niall MacDonald said they later agreed to try a new ecstasy pill called "capital hardcore".

Zoe contacted Lamont through Facebook Messenger.

He suggested meeting her in the city's Drumchapel to sell six tablets for £45 and sent her a message stating: "Be rapid."

Zoe went on to hand over the cash before going to the flat in Cowcaddens.

'Unable to walk'

She took a couple of the pills while two girls shared the others.

The court heard Zoe was later "unable to walk".

Mr MacDonald said: "She became increasingly agitated and aggressive. She subsequently appeared to be taking a fit."

A 999 call was made, but Zoe never recovered.

A post-mortem examination revealed the death was due to ecstasy "intoxication".

The court heard Lamont's DNA was found on the bag they came in. He made no comment when questioned by police.

Sheriff Johnston told Lamont: "Zoe Bremner died very quickly from ingesting MDMA. The risk is always there. That is why the court deals seriously with these cases."

Selkirk was sentenced for selling pills after also being contacted via Facebook.

The four 15-year-old's who bought them either took the tablets or shared them with friends.

'I'm a Muslim woman, I'm visually-impaired and I'm a boxer'

Fit, strong, and with a steely determination behind her eyes, Sannah Hussain has many of the traits you need to be successful in the boxing ring.

But she is very different to your average amateur boxer.

Sannah is a Scottish Muslim who wears a headscarf and dresses modestly and also lives with a series of debilitating health conditions

The 25-year-old was born with Albinism, a condition which affects the colour of her hair, the pigment in her skin and has caused a serious visual impairment.

She also has an autoimmune condition, called Myasthenia Gravis, which causes muscle weakness and fatigue.

But the Glasgow-based charity worker is adamant her health conditions will not prevent her from stepping into the ring for her first exhibition fight this weekend.

"I've always been an active person regardless of my vision, regardless of my muscles," she told BBC Scotland.

"I've always been a go-getter, I've always wanted to be up and about, doing things."

Image captionSannah has a severe visual impairment and suffers from a muscle condition which causes fatigue

Her passion for the sport developed after she set up a class for women from minority groups as part of her job with the Human Appeal charity earlier this year.

She wanted to provide safe, friendly, and empowering fitness sessions for women who might normally wear the hijab.

The Saturday morning sessions at the Kynoch Boxing gym in Glasgow's Kinning Park have been popular with women uneasy in a "normal" Lycra-dominant gym environment.

"We arranged to have the gym closed off to anybody else at that time of day, so the girls could come in, take their hijabs off and feel comfortable with what they're wearing and focus purely on the working out and not feel self-conscious," Sannah said.

"It's really helped break that barrier that women can't do this, or women of this community can't do this, because they certainly can.

"Like everything in life, it's just about finding a way around the things that are challenging."

Image copyrightSANNAH HUSSAIN

Image captionShe fell in love with the sport after taking part in a class for black and minority ethnic (BME) women at a Glasgow gym

But the project has had an unexpected effect on Sannah herself.

"I didn't realise how much I would fall in love with it," she said.

"Even though it makes me tired and sometimes sick of being here, overall I love doing something that makes me feel independent.

"This isn't about being part of a team, it's about what you put into it is what you'll get out of it.

"Although I may never be as successful as other people, I can certainly see an improvement in myself, in my own happiness."

I am really nervous, I am really scared, but if I let that stuff stop me then I'd never leave the house

Sannah Hussain, Amateur boxer

Sannah says she has lost weight, gained confidence and seen her overall fitness improve since setting up the classes in February.

It's been a remarkable journey for a woman whose sight is so bad she struggles to catch the right bus or train because she can't see the signs.

Her ability to see detail or read small writing is limited and it took her an additional two years to complete her degree.

And she takes strong daily medication for a muscle condition which can cause extreme fatigue in her arms and legs, and even slurred speech.

Exhibition fight

But she says her new training regime has given her confidence to push herself further, despite the limitations of her medical conditions.

"Coming in here, you're training so hard sometimes that you really just want to stop," she said.

"But the coaches, they're not going to let you stop, they know that there's more in you and there's more that they're going to get out of you and they'll keep pushing you.

"When you overcome that barrier, it makes you realise that there's so much more you can probably do that you didn't realise and you want to discover those things."

Image captionSannah and her sparring partner Sophie Paton are amongan increasing number of women who are taking up boxing

Now she has signed up to fight at Judgement Night, a boxing event in Glasgow which includes a series of exhibition clashes featuring beginners like Sannah.

She has been training hard for the clash against an as-yet unknown opponent and she is determined to give her best performance.

But she admitted: "I am really nervous, I am really scared, but if I let that stuff stop me then I'd never leave the house."

Sannah wants to use the fight to break down barriers to the sport and raise money for children who don't get similar opportunities.

Organisers SK Promotions are allowing her flexibility in everything from the length of the rounds, to what she wears in the ring.

"If I want to wear leggings and a long-sleeved t-shirt they'll let me do that," she said.

"If I'm going to wear my sports hijab, they'll let me do that because they understand from speaking to me how important this is to show to other people there's no limits, there's always a way round something."

The cash she raises by taking part in the fight will help child welfare around the world.

"I'm literally fighting for their right for survival," she said.

"If it wasn't for me being in this country, having the healthcare system that we have, having the family that I have, and the opportunities that I have, I wouldn't be who I am today. "

Hank Green on the darker side of internet fame

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green might not initially sound Absolutely Remarkable.

"It's about a young woman, who is coming out of college, starting her life in the workforce, trying to figure out who she is and what she's going to be," the vlogger and author tells the BBC.

Sounds pretty normal so far, right? Well that's where the relatability ends.

Because then, when protagonist April May (yes, really) makes her way home from work, she stumbles across a massive robot, dubbed Carl, in the middle of the street and naturally, calls up her friend Andy to film and upload it online.

Being the first to report on the scene, the pair become internet sensations overnight, and when more Carls pop up across the world, April becomes the face of this futuristic phenomenon, quickly learning about the cost of fame in the age of social media.

As one half of YouTube channel VlogBrothers, which has more than three million subscribers, and co-creator of VidCon - one of the biggest events in your favourite YouTuber's social calendar - it's safe to say that Hank is well-equipped to write about internet fame.

"I've always wanted to write a book," he says. "And it turned out that it was more about finding a story that I felt I was necessary for, that no-one else could write."

While there are already plenty of books depicting the life-changing effects of becoming a social media star, Green's take on the matter goes a little deeper, as we see April's obsession with being the centre of the story become the source of her downfall.

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

Image captionFirst held in 2010, VidCon now sees over 20,000 vloggers and fans across several continents

By the time Green became popular on the internet, he was 28 years old, married and says he felt he had established his identity.

"When I was watching 19 and 20-year-olds go through this, dropping out of college to become famous on the internet, I saw that it can go well but it can also go poorly, and usually it'll be a mix of those two things," he ponders.

"I wasn't here to tell a wish fulfilment story and walk through the process of how great it is to be famous on the internet; it can really suck sometimes."

"And I could never publicly be like 'Here's an essay on why being a famous, rich, internet creator sucks!', but you can say it from the perspective of a character who you've been invited into seeing the world through."

Being admired by millions of viewers who latch onto each and every one of your videos may seem like the modern-day dream, but as readers see through April's journey, no matter how many followers you have, it can still be quite isolating - especially when trying to keep those followers.

"When the number of followers feels like it's shrinking, it feels like such a tremendous loss and such a hit to your self-worth," he says.

"It's very difficult not to tie your self-worth to the size of your audience and and I've watched a lot of people do things that they know are not good things to do, in order to keep those numbers high because they're protecting their self-worth, and I watched April do that as well and it's tough."

One major aspect of social media and the internet is being able to curate our profiles and feeds to reflect our personalities. Or is it?

In the book, we see April slowly branding herself as the face of humanity, where she notes that "being annoyed by carefully crafted internet personas" was part of her carefully crafted internet persona.

Which raises the question, can anyone truly be authentic online?

Hank laughs, saying that that's one of his favourite parts of the book too.

"That question comes down to whether anyone can truly be authentic," he explains.

"We have always done this, we have different ways we portray ourselves to different people and have different ways we think about ourselves internally and ideas we have inside of our heads we'd never share," he says.

"And when you do pretend to be a certain way, you eventually become that way.

"So what is the self? Basically we've now gotten to one of the root questions of philosophy. And it didn't take very long to go from 'can you be authentic on the internet?' to 'what is the self?', so I don't know how to answer that one."

From politics and internet trolls to world-dominating robots and meetings with the president, it's almost as if this book is ready for a Netflix adaptation.

Image captionHank's brother John (centre) had his novel Paper Towns adapted for the big screen

Hank's older brother John Green - author of Paper Towns and The Fault In Our Stars - is already pretty familiar with making the leap from the page to the silver screen but for now, he'd like to work on the sequel.

"I want to be done with the sequel before I think about the movie because I don't want all of that stuff to stand in the way of writing," he says.

"I really need to write book two and that's really important to me, to see this story through to the end," he says.

So while we won't be seeing April and Carl come to life any time soon, he did pick up a few tips from John.

"I would occasionally talk with John about a plot problem I have, like when I want something in the book to happen but I'm can't figure out how to get there."

"I remember John saying 'If you are writing and it's bad, that's better than not writing at all, you will look back and you'll see that you found something even if you're gonna delete everything you wrote today, you will have learned something that's useful and it's going to make the book better'."

Placenta complications: 'Women must know the risks'

Expectant mothers should be told that the risk of placenta complications rises after a caesarean or fertility treatment, according to top doctors.

Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) guidelines said early diagnosis of conditions placenta praevia and placenta accreta was vital.

They added doctors should discuss with women the safest way to give birth.

The conditions can lead to heavy bleeding and sometimes put mother and baby's lives at risk.

TV personality Kim Kardashian developed placenta accreta when pregnant with her daughter North West.

TV presenter Amanda Holden suffered from the rare placenta praevia-accreta when expecting her youngest daughter Hollie.

Placenta praevia happens when the placenta attaches in the lower part of the uterus (womb), sometimes completely covering the cervix (neck of the womb).

Placenta accreta is a rare but serious condition when the placenta is stuck to the muscle of the womb and/or to nearby structures such as the bladder.

Both conditions can cause heavy bleeding, particularly towards the end of the pregnancy, because the placenta is low down in the uterus.

This can sometimes require blood transfusions and lead to the loss of the uterus.

The RCOG has produced an online leaflet with information for women who may develop or have these conditions.

It says the rates of placenta praevia and placenta accreta have increased and are likely to continue to increase as a result of rising rates of caesarean births and the use of assisted reproductive technology, such as IVF.

This is because potential scars in the uterus created by caesareans and fertility treatment mean any subsequent pregnancies are more likely to implant in the scar, causing problems with the placenta.

The highest rates of complication for both mother and baby occur when these placenta complications are only diagnosed at delivery, the RCOG said.

And it encouraged more scans and specialised care to help reduce any risks.

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

'Discuss risk factors'

Prof Eric Jauniaux, lead author of the guidelines, said: "We hope this updated guidance will support healthcare professionals during discussions with women and their partners who may be considering assisted reproduction, particularly IVF, or an elective caesarean birth.

"These are both risk factors that can increase risk of developing these serious complications of the placenta."

Prof Jauniaux, professor of obstetric and foetal medicine at University College London, said the guidelines should also help doctors to diagnose the complications early and discuss the safest way for women to give birth.

Dr Geeta Kumar, chair of the RCOG patient information committee, said: "It is important for women to be aware of these complications of the placenta, but they should be reassured that these are very rare and specialist care is available.

"Early diagnosis is key to reduce harms associated with placenta praevia and accreta to ensure the safest possible outcome for mother and baby."

What does the placenta do?

The placenta develops together with the baby in the uterus during pregnancy.

It attaches to the wall of the uterus and provides a connection between mother and baby.

Oxygen and nutrients pass from the woman's blood through the placenta and into the baby's blood.

The placenta is delivered shortly after a baby is born, and is sometimes called the afterbirth.

How common is placenta praevia?

It is more common if a woman has had previous caesareans, fertility treatment or if they smoke.

If you have placenta praevia, your baby will probably need to be born by caesarean.

One in 200 women have the condition at the end of their pregnancy.

How common is placenta accreta?

It is a complication which affects between one in 300 and one in 2,000 pregnancies.

This is more common if a woman has previously had a caesarean.

It may cause heavy bleeding at the time of birth.

What is vasa praevia?

Vasa praevia is a very rare condition affecting between one in 1,200 and one in 5,000 pregnancies.

It is where blood vessels travelling from your baby to your placenta, unprotected by placental tissue or the umbilical cord, pass near to the cervix.

If these blood vessels tear, this can be very dangerous for your baby.

Air travel 'without your passport leaving your pocket'

New technologies are helping to tackle one of the great scourges of air travel - airport queues. But at what cost to our privacy?

Queues to check-in and drop your bags, at security, at passport control and finally queues at your boarding gate.

Air travel can be a frustrating business, even if these queues are largely a result of airports trying to ensure our safety.

And as more of us fly - 4.4 billion passengers are forecast to take to the skies in 2018 - airports are being pushed to their limits.

So the industry is hoping technology can streamline the process, with increasing use of biometrics such as facial recognition - and not just at passport control.

Image copyrightELIZABETH NEEDHAM-BENNETT/BBC

Image captionPassport control queues are an all-too-common experience for air passengers

For example, British Airways uses facial recognition when boarding passengers on domestic UK flights, as well as for some international flights out of the US.

Travellers flying from Heathrow are photographed when going through security. A second photo is taken at the boarding gate - and if the image matches the original one and the data confirms they are at the right gate, it automatically opens.

The US system combines check-in information with biometrics - images and fingerprints - and biographical data from passports and visas. When a passenger arrives at a boarding gate, a new photo is taken and compared to the data on record.

Raoul Cooper, digital airport design manager at British Airways, says this approach can halve the time it takes to board 240 people onto an international flight, with a consequent 10% improvement in flight punctuality.

Image captionBritish Airways operates biometric self-boarding gates at Heathrow Terminal 5

"We believe that this starts to prove how we can use identity services more widely and is an important part of our ambition to create a seamless journey," says Mr Cooper.

"One day, a traditional passport scan or swipe may no longer be needed."

Similar face-scanning technology is being trialled at Singapore's Changi airport, where one potential application could be spotting lost passengers who've missing the final boarding call for their flight, the airport operator says.

Changi's Terminal 4 is already using the tech for self-service check-in, bag drop, immigration and boarding.

In the US, Delta Airlines is planning to use facial recognition at check-in, security, boarding and customs at the Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal at Jackson Atlanta airport, doing away with passport checks altogether for some international travellers.

Research consultancy Frost & Sullivan reckons airport spending towards improving the passenger experience will reach $4.2bn (£3.2bn) by 2020.

"Technology integration into airport functions is driven by a growth demand in air travel and shrinking terminal capacity," says Renjit Benjamin, the firm's industry analyst for aerospace, defence and security.

"The tendency to employ technology is not regionally limited - cities around the globe have ongoing projects that effectively deploy digital technology for seamless passenger management and process efficiency."

Media captionFrom hi-tech airport sensors to the solar palm tree that charges your phone

Dubai airport in the United Arab Emirates also has big - and quirky - plans for biometric technology.

The airport intends to replace traditional security desks with aquarium-like tunnels featuring up to 80 face-scanning cameras disguised as fish. As passengers walk through they are scanned from every angle while they look at the images, and the captured data is compared with existing ID photos.

The first tunnels are due to be installed by the end of 2018, with all terminals to be equipped with the tech-aquariums by 2020.

Tech start-up VChain believes blockchain, the technology underpinning cryptocurrencies, will help provide us with secure, verifiable digital identities that could make airport queues a thing of the past.

Its software generates a signal - a mathematical version of the red, orange, green of a traffic light - about a passenger's passport, helping authorities verify the passenger's identity and build a "reputation" and trust score around that travel document.

These mathematical signals are stored on the blockchain, preventing tampering and achieving verifiable consensus.

The more times the passport and passenger data is verified, the better its reputation becomes, such that inaccurate data entered on a booking website - a common occurrence that contributes to delays - could be corrected automatically, the company hopes.

"[Blockchain is] the best approach we have developed to date as a civilisation for record keeping," claims VChain's chief executive Irra Ariella Khi.

"And good records are good for security, because your risk assessment is always only as good as the records it's based on."

More Technology of Business

The VChain platform is being tested by IAG - the global airline group that owns BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling.

"The airport of the future will see passengers breezing through without annoying queues or document checks, with their passport never leaving their pocket," she says.

But wherever biometrics is deployed, concerns about privacy and data protection are sure to follow. Image recognition is getting better, but it is far from infallible, with human rights campaigners such as Privacy International and Human Rights Watch warning about misidentifications and the potential for abuse by authorities.

For its part, BA says it does not hold any passenger ID data, but transfers it to the US Customs and Border Protection identity system, which then sends back anonymised "match" or "no match" signals.

And as long as air passengers benefit from the increased convenience of queue-less air travel, privacy concerns may remain muted.

Infanticide in Kenya: 'I was told to kill my disabled baby'

Lydia Njoki's youngest child Samwell, who has epilepsy and physical disabilities, would not be here if some of her family had their way.

Her own grandmother went as far as suggesting how she could kill her baby.

"She told me to insert needles into Samwell's veins - that they would kill him slowly and no-one would know what had happened," she said.

The 56-year-old mother-of-four lives in Narok County, Kenya.

"People said I was cursed, that's why I got a child with a disability," Ms Njoki said.

Many a night, she cried herself to sleep: "I hated myself and asked God, why me?"

Image captionSamwell is the youngest of her four children

Florence Kipchumba faced similar pressure - her family told her that her baby should be sacrificed.

"As an infant, Meshack used to cry a lot, and when my family couldn't take it any more, I was kicked out of home," she said.

A friend then took her in, only to also suggest she kill the baby a month later. "She asked me to put acid in his food so that he could die, but I refused to do so and left her house."

The decision to resist the pressure to kill has had lifelong consequences for Ms Kipchumba. She was forced to flee her community, and now lives with her son in a tin shack, doing odd jobs to survive.

When Meshack was younger, his backbone was weak and he had no head control. "I would dig a hole in the ground, lay him in it and use the soil to form a cushion around him," his mother said.

Image captionFlorence Kipchumba carrying her eight-year-old, Meshack

She tells me she doesn't regret her decision to keep her child for a moment. The boy is now eight years old and can sit and walk short distances, albeit with some difficulty.

Ms Njoki and Ms Kipchumba are not alone. A new study in Kenya has found that 45% of mothers interviewed by a leading charity faced pressure to kill their babies born with disabilities.

The survey found that the situation was worse in rural areas - where the figure could be as high as two in every three mothers.

Cultural roots

Most of the women interviewed by Disability Rights International said their children were considered "cursed, bewitched and possessed" and that a belief prevailed that the mothers were being punished for their sins, including being "unfaithful to their husbands".

Infanticide is rooted in old traditions and beliefs. An elderly traditional birth attendant in Narok - south-west of the capital Nairobi - told the BBC that according to her culture, babies with disabilities were killed out of love.

"What used to push people to do that was the helplessness," said Timpiyan enole Koipa, seated inside her mud-walled one-roomed house dressed in a bright chequered red and white shawl and rows of traditional beaded necklaces.

"The child would otherwise suffer if it was allowed to live," she adds.

Image captionMany parents dropped off their children at the Compassionate Hands for the Disabled shelter, and never picked them up again

While infanticide was the most shocking part of the Disability Rights International's report, it is not its only finding. The researchers initially set out to assess conditions in orphanages and care homes, where nearly 3,500 children in Kenya live.

The author of the report, Priscila Rodriguez, told the BBC: "What is outrageous is that the government is passing the responsibility for these children to orphanages... Out of sight, out of mind; the government does not need to care for them any more, does not need to provide for them, does not need to ensure the supports they need are there."

They took us to see one, Compassionate Hands for the Disabled, in Nairobi. The story of the home, and its owner, in some ways encapsulates the problems this society has with disability.

Anne Njeri was born disabled and decided to start a day-care centre for children with mental and physical conditions. She never intended it to be a residential home.

"But in a week, we had 11 abandoned children, and in a month we had 30," she said.

Image captionAnne now has dozens of disabled children in her care

She tried to look for the parents who had abandoned the children, but to no avail - they dropped the children off in the morning and simply never picked them up again.

She now has 86 children in her care. Watching her interact with them, it's clear they love her, and are loved in return, but she admits the home needs to do more. Researchers agree, and told us the way they are looked after, kept indoors and often restrained, will make their conditions worse.

Government criticism

But it is the government of Kenya they are most critical of.

The Kenyan government did not respond to our request for a response, although it is understood they admit more needs to be done.

While the idea that half of women with disabled children faced pressure to kill them as babies is truly shocking, it only reflects those whose babies made it to childhood. We have no idea how many others gave in to that terrible pressure.

Infanticide of children with disabilities is not unique to Kenya, but data is hard to come by across the world.

Studies recognise that it has history back to ancient times, remaining a significant problem during the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Research says children under one are at four times greater risk of being murdered than any other age group.

Cases often go unrecorded or combined with other offences, and most countries lack institutions that track such deaths, so the true magnitude of infanticide remains unknown across the world.

"They are done underground," says Veronica Sialo, a mother of a child with cerebral palsy and a community leader in Narok.

"Because any child can die at birth or when they go home [from hospital] you just hear the child has died. But when you follow the background, that child was disabled and that's why the family killed that child," she adds.

"Some of us in our culture believe it's a curse, that you've been bewitched, so you're not wanted in the community."

Her views correspond to the findings of a report titled Children accused of Witchcraft, by the UN Children's Agency, Unicef.

The report, which focused on the African continent, says "abnormal births" would often led to the killing or abandonment of babies.

But in some countries, practices and beliefs changed because of the influence of colonial missionaries. Other communities have seen the introduction of alternative practices such as paying fines in the form of dances and ceremonies instead of sentencing the child to death, helping to erase suspicions.

New laws and the actions of organisations defending children's rights have also seen cases of infanticide reduce.

Back in Narok, Veronica is doing her best to improve the lives of mothers like her and their children. She has formed a support group that now has 43 members, including Florence Chebet and Lydia Njoki.

These mothers say they have found solace in knowing others like them. They want their children to be accepted by society. They meet once a month to share experiences and to encourage one another. Veronica's mission is to see her community overcome one of the oldest and most cruel beliefs.

"We need to do awareness so that they know that these are children like any other," she concludes.

Air Niugini plane comes down in Micronesia lagoon

A passenger aircraft has come down in a lagoon off Chuuk International Airport in Micronesia after it overshot the runway, say airport officials.

Images circulating online showed the Air Niugini plane, from Papua New Guinea, sitting in shallow water just off the coast.

None of the 35 passengers and 12 crew onboard flight ANG73 suffered serious injuries.

The cause of the crash is unclear, but investigations are due to begin soon.

"The plane crashed in the lagoon, about 160 yards away from the runway," Chuuk airport manager Jimmy Emilio told the BBC.

"Right now we don't really know what happened. Investigations will start earliest tomorrow, but [for now], operations are starting again as usual in the airport."

Mr Emilio said all those onboard the Boeing 737-800 aircraft were taken to hospital for checks, saying he believed some suffered from "minor injuries".

The aircraft was flying from the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia to Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, stopping at Micronesia's Weno island on the way.

One of the First Bitcoin Miners is Quietly Cashing Out: Blockchain Researcher

As of Thursday, Sept. 25, the bitcoin price has climbed about 3 percent, briefly crossing the $6,700 level and extending toward $6,750 at one point in the early evening.

While this movement has made plenty of cryptocurrency  traders and investors happy in the short-term, a recent analysis of spending patterns relating to some of the earliest blocks of bitcoin has revealed that a very early miner has been taking advantage of the last several years’ long-term upward trajectory to slowly cash out tens of thousands of coins since Dec. 2016.

A recent tweet from a cryptocurrency expert, Blockchain data analyst Antoine Le Calvez, has revealed that a mysterious bitcoin miner has managed to send approximately 30,000 BTC cryptocurrency exchanges between Dec. 2016, and Jan. 2018, potentially cashing them out for a mammoth payday.

Mystery Miner Cashes In

According to Le Calvez, the mysterious bitcoin miner has been smart enough to cash in on their youngest blocks of bitcoin to not reveal the full extent of their mining period.

An analysis of the spending patterns of the earliest blocks of Bitcoin seem to indicate that a very early miner sent around 30k BTC to exchanges from Dec 2016 to early Jan 2018.

It would seem that, at the latest, the mining started somewhere around Dec. 2009, back when the value of BTC wasn’t much above $0, still wasn’t anywhere near reaching dollar parity, and the flagship cryptocurrency could be profitably mined with a standard-issue CPU. The first Bitcoin Pizza Day, you will remember, did not occur until 2010.

Furthermore, the researcher believes that the mystery miner had mined for at least seven months. Through this time, he managed to acquire more than 30,000 BTC since block rewards were high and miners were few.

Y-axis is when that block was spent, if it was, also expressed in height, the higher the dot, the most recent the spending.

He speculates that the miner could have even commenced mining operations earlier than Dec. 2009 since, recognizing that spending older coins is more likely to attract attention, he desires to conceal his sell-off. For some, this may raise questions, such as whether the mystery wallet owner is not Satoshi Nakamoto himself, although the researcher seems to think otherwise.

Lego wheelchair helps injured turtle to move.

An injured turtle has got back on his feet with the help of a unique customised Lego wheelchair.

The wild Eastern box turtle was found in a local park with multiple fractures to the bottom of his shell and taken to Maryland Zoo's hospital for treatment.

Vets operated on the turtle to repair the fractures, using metal bone plates, sewing clasps and surgical wire to fix the pieces together.

But in order for the turtle to heal properly, the bottom of the shell needed to be kept off the ground.

Dr Ellen Bronson, senior director of animal health, conservation, and research at the Zoo, said: "Because of the unique placement of the fractures, we faced a difficult challenge with maintaining the turtle's mobility while allowing him to heal properly."

Luckily, Garrett Fraess, a veterinary student on rotation at the zoo, knew someone that could help.

"They don't make turtle-sized wheelchairs. So, we drew some sketches of a customised wheelchair and I sent them to a friend who is a Lego enthusiast," he said.

Doctors found a unique solution to the problem of a turtle's fractures, which were causing mobility issues for the animal

The turtle received his very own multi-coloured Lego brick wheelchair just a few weeks after surgery.

The Lego frame sits on four wheels and is attached to the turtle's shell with Plumber's putty.

"He never even hesitated," said Ms Fraess. "He took off and has been doing great. Turtles are really good at healing as long as the shell remains stable."

The Lego frame allows the turtle to remain mobile during his recovery, and revert to natural behaviours, such as fully closing his shell if he feels threatened.

"Turtles heal much slower than mammals and birds, since their metabolism is slower So, this turtle will likely use his Lego wheelchair through the winter and into the spring until all of the fragments have fused together and the shell has completely healed," said Dr Bronson.

The turtle was discovered as part of a monitoring project by the zoo, which has since 1996 recorded, tagged and released 132 wild turtles.

"This particular turtle was originally tagged in 2000, making him at least 18 years old," said Dr Bronson. "We are very happy that he is recovering well from his injuries and we plan to return him to the wild once he is fully healed."

David Beckham avoids speeding prosecution after lawyer 'Mr Loophole' finds technicality

David Beckham will not be prosecuted over a speeding charge after his lawyer, known as "Mr Loophole", successfully fought the allegation on a technicality.

Former England captain Beckham was accused of driving his Bentley at 59mph in a 40mph zone on the A40 in Paddington, London, shortly after 5.30pm on 23 January.

Celebrity lawyer Nick Freeman initially had a setback when a judge dismissed his submission seeking to dismiss the charge.

Mr Freeman, who entered a not-guilty plea, said a lack of admissible evidence meant Beckham had no case to answer.

District Judge Barbara Barnes told him a tribunal could reasonably convict the former England footballer on the evidence and ruled there was a case to answer.

However, Mr Freeman also stated that the notice of intended prosecution arrived one day outside the 14-day limit and was therefore "defective".

Beckham hired Mr Freeman to represent him over a speeding charge - and it turned out to be a good move

In his submission he told the court: "If the Crown can't prove that the letter was sent by first-class post then the concept that it arrives in two working days goes out of the window.

"It would be unsafe to allow these proceedings to go any further."

The judge told the court that the notice of intended prosecution (NIP) was sent on 2 February and should have arrived at Bentley Motors Ltd, the registered keepers of the vehicle, by 6 February.

But she said she was satisfied on the evidence heard that it did not in fact arrive until the day after the statutory 14-day window.

She said: "What I find is the fact it did not arrive in the post room of Bentley Motors Ltd until 7 February and therefore was one day outside the legal limit.

Mr Freeman, who has trademarked the name "Mr Loophole", has worked with many other footballers, including Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry.

He revealed his methods in his book The Art Of The Loophole, where he said he never meets a client before a case because he does not want to be compromised by any detail they might reveal.

His first big name client was then-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999. He also represented Beckham over another charge the same year.

Mr Freeman argued that Sir Alex had to use the hard shoulder to get to the training ground to allow for his upset stomach and need for a toilet.

Other reasons the lawyer has given include stars being forced to break the speed limits to escape chasing paparazzi and needing to keep their licences because of family commitments.

He is also known for his in-depth knowledge of motoring law and has helped clients avoid prosecution or charges based on technical errors such as spelling mistakes.

Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes escaped a prosecution for an offence due to Mr Freeman pointing out there were spelling errors on the letter summoning him to court and letters were sent out to a "Mr Ran Flenns".

Ultimate 'FIFA 19' preview: Best players, fastest and slowest, strongest and more

It's the end of September and that means only one thing in video games: It's time for the latest version of the FIFA franchise to hit our consoles and keep us occupied through the grim, snowy misery of winter.

FIFA 19 hits the stores/internet/whatever this Friday, a run that began with the first pixels hitting our Segas in 16-bit glory back in 1993.

Like those versions that came before, FIFA 19 is great fun. It's enhanced in subtle ways that move the game ever closer to realism but with enough familiarity that you can pick up a controller and dive right in without feeling bewildered. The inclusion of the Chinese Super League means you're now able to control the litany of stars who went there for astronomical sums over the past season or two. (Here's lookin' at you, Ezequiel Lavezzi.) Yet the Russian Premier League has vanished, leaving behind just CSKA Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow and Spartak Moscow. You can't have it all.

Popular story mode The Journey has been enhanced and expanded to give you more opportunities to impact the future of not just Alex Hunter, as he moves to Real Madrid, but his younger sister (a budding U.S. national team striker) and his best friend from the academy days as he tries to establish himself in the Premier League. The pathways are more complicated for all three interconnected leads, making it a more immersive way to play the game than just league or tournament modes.

Another big add was a reinvention of the passing, ball control and shooting mechanics to leave more room for mastery and improvement that might set a seasoned player apart from a novice.

Finally, the officially licensed presence of UEFA's flagship competitions, the Champions League and the Europa League, is a delight. Each tournament mode carries the branded style right down to the typeface, score chyrons, the match ball and, yes, the official chaaaaaampioooooooons pre-game theme song is in here too. (The first time you play a CL fixture, you can't seem to skip ahead beyond the song so I hope you like it as much as I do.)

Consider this your official guide to all the nuances, changes, highs and lows. Oh, and it's great fun: If you're a super-fan of the FIFA franchise, it will tick all the boxes in your heart and keep the controller in your hands until the FIFA 20 demo drops next September. There's just enough enhancement and refinement to give life to a very familiar and comforting series.

Cristiano Ronaldo again graces the cover as FIFA 19 pushes the game even further than past editions. EA Sports

The Top 10 in the game

10. Toni Kroos, CM, Real Madrid (last year: 9)
9. David De Gea, GK, Man United (11)
8. Luis Suarez, ST, Barcelona (4)
7. Sergio Ramos, CB, Real Madrid (7)
6. Eden Hazard, LW, Chelsea (8)
5. Kevin De Bruyne, CAM, Manchester City (15)
4. Luka Modric, CM, Real Madrid (12)
3. Neymar, LW, Paris Saint-Germain (3)
2. Lionel Messi, CF, Barcelona (2)
1. Cristiano Ronaldo, ST, Juventus (1)

Whether playing a franchise mode or starting a FIFA Ultimate Teams (FUT) dynasty worthy of winning real-life tournaments, you'll want to make sure you've got at least one or two of the above. The ranking has changed a lot in the past year, with two players in particular soaring up the charts: Luka Modric, who's currently winning all the individual awards following a spectacular 12 months for club and country, and Kevin De Bruyne, who grew into his fullest potential as the fulcrum for Pep Guardiola's all-conquering and record-smashing City side in the Premier League.

The top three remain the same, though one has to wonder: Didn't Kylian Mbappe or Mo Salah do enough to crack the top 10? (They're ranked 42nd and 27th, respectively.)

The pass masters

Best passers: Kevin De Bruyne, CAM, Manchester City (92). Luka Modric, CM, Real Madrid (90). Toni Kroos, CM, Real Madrid; Christian Eriksen, CAM, Tottenham (89). Six players, including Lionel Messi, on 88.

Worst passers: Wang Yaopeng, CB, Dalian Yifang; George Ray, CB, Crewe Alexandra; Yoshiaki Fujita, CB, Jubilo Iwata (24). Chen Weiming, CB, Guangzhou R&F (25). Four players tied on 26.

The biggest improvements to FIFA 19 come in the passing and ball movement department, making accuracy a must when kickstarting attacks. It's not like FIFA games of old where you can turn any team into a dangerous bunch of one-touch passers: 19 is the most realistic yet when it comes to how players perform on the ball.

If you're facing one direction but want to lay it off to someone behind your player, it's fair to assume the ball will no longer ping to them perfectly, in stride, as if controlled by magnets. The players at the top end of the passing scale will be able to play a full gamut of long- and short-range passes via air or ground with more confidence, but it still requires forethought as to how you manage possession against the CPU or a friend. Moving the ball within your player's field of vision is the best bet if you want to ensure the killer through-ball finds a winger tearing into space.

Despite being a veteran of the franchise all the way back to 1993 (Della Savia, anyone?), it took me a few games to get a handle on where I wanted the ball to go vs. where it actually ended up.

Changes to the touch and control mechanics means that your player is no longer assured of keeping possession. Unless it's Kevin De Bruyne, of course. EA Sports

Running at light speed vs. stuck in the mud

The fastest: Adama Traore, RW, Wolves; Kylian Mbappe, RW, Paris Saint-Germain (96). Gareth Bale, RW, Real Madrid; Douglas Costa, LM, Juventus; Leroy Sane, LW, Manchester City; Jurgen Damm, RM, Tigres UANL (95). 13 players tied on 94.

The slowest: Aaron Hughes, CB, Heart of Midlothian (24). Frode Kippe, CB, Lillestrom SK; Jamie McCombe, CB, Lincoln City (25). Damien Delaney, CB, Cork City; Matt Rhead, ST, Lincoln City (27). Five players tied on 29.

Speed is still killer in FIFA 19 if you're a fan of the sprint button, but thanks to some tweaks and refinements to game play, it's no longer enough to just mash the controller and watch your player zoom off toward goal. However, the initial burst can be enough to make a difference and you'll note that the wing is where such gifts of acceleration can be found.

Defenders are smarter in how they track your runs and pursue you around the field when trying to kickstart upfield moves. It's no longer enough to simply punt it into space and out-run your markers, though raw pace can help you gain separation. Tweaks to the crossing mechanism become most obvious when you're at full speed: If you're off balance, the variation in cross pace and accuracy is much sharper compared with previous FIFA iterations. A good run is for nothing if you belt the square pass into the stands.

The converse of relentless pace down the flanks is a gaggle of leaden-footed central defenders. Don't attempt to play a high line and offside trap if you have any of the above in your starting XI.

The Journey mode is back with Alex Hunter grappling with life at Real Madrid, though his sister and his best friend also have significant storylines to pursue as well. EA Sports

Separating the strong from the weak

The strongest: Adebayo Akinfenwa, ST, Wycombe Wanderers (97). Tomas Chory, ST, Sigma Olomouc; Kendall Waston, CB, Vancouver Whitecaps (95); Romelu Lukaku, ST, Manchester United; Felipe Carvalho, CB, Valerrenga; Anderson Esiti, CDM, KAA Gent; Kalidou Koulibaly, CB, Napoli; Niklas Sule, CB, Bayern Munich; Kara Mbodji, CB, FC Nantes; Sebastian Coates, CB, Sporting CP (94).

The weakest: Ryo Miyaichi, RM, FC St. Pauli (30). Cesar Valenzuela, CAM, Huachipato; Patrik Karlsson Lagemyr, RW, IFK Goteborg; Bryan Mbuemo, LW, ESTAC Troyes; Jordan Young, ST, Swindon Town (32). Four players tied on 33.

Power can often be important in soccer. Do you win every aerial challenge? Are you a menace in possession and impossible to tackle? Can you bully just about anyone off the ball?

It's no surprise that Akinfenwa, the man they call "The Beast," tops the strength charts again given his remarkable physique and downright intimidating style of play. Unsurprisingly, there's a mixture of players at both ends of the pitch who have the tools to dominate: Depending on how the Champions League group stage goes, we could even see a Sule vs. Lukaku match-up in the knockouts, the ultimate test of immovable object vs. unstoppable force.

Luckily, there's a new range of quick tactical options added to FIFA 19 in case you find yourself out-matched. Building off the "quick sub" menu added to FIFA 18, whereby you could pre-arrange set substitutions or have the option to make a spur-of-the-moment change without pulling out of the game, there's a new range of quick shifts in formation and lineup that you can access mid-game. If something's not working, you can pull up your pre-set tactics and adjust to what your opponent is doing.

Outmatched in midfield? Adjust to add an extra body as the game's happening. Need more support at the back? Tweak the number of players in your defense or push a striker into a more withdrawn centre-forward role to help with retaining possession. It's yet another enhancement adding a layer of realism to proceedings so you can indulge your inner Pep Guardiola when it comes to shuffling the pieces on the pitch.

FIFA 19 brings even more realism and polish to the visuals, which is remarkable given how last year's edition saw a significant increase in quality. EA Sports

The five-star skill club

There's a select list of players in the game who boast the full five-star rating when it comes to skill on the ball. Capable of pulling off just about every trick, flick and bicycle kick imaginable, you want to look to these guys if you're trying to improve your team's showmanship. It's especially useful when receiving the ball in crowded areas: Poor control is more pronounced in FIFA 19 and will be punished accordingly.

Of course, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Philippe Coutinho are present, as well as Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and the inimitable Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It's not just attack where the flair can be found: Real Madrid's Marcelo also has the full complement of magic when in possession and is the only defender with five-star powers.

There's a glut of up-and-coming talent to aim for when building a team: Federico Bernardeschi of Juventus is worth grabbing but Omar Abdulrahman (Al-Hilal), Quincy Promes of Sevilla and Martin Odegaard (remember him, Madridistas?) are more realistic still if you're in a franchise mode but lacking the funds of an oligarch to take your team forward. And for anyone saying you can't find wizardry in the English lower leagues, League One Sunderland are repped on the skill front via elder statesman Aiden McGeady.

Red Bulls' Robles & Davis showcase FIFA 19 skills

New York Red Bulls' Luis Robles and Sean Davis stopped by ESPN to square off in FIFA 19 and see how accurate their player ratings are in the game.

The best of MLS

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, ST, LA Galaxy (85). David Villa, ST, New York City FC; Sebastian Giovinco, CF, Toronto FC (82). Carlos Vela, RW, Los Angeles FC; Josef Martinez, ST, Atlanta United FC (81). Bastian Schweinsteiger, CM, Chicago Fire; Ignacio Piatti, LW, Montreal Impact; Wayne Rooney, ST, DC United; Miguel Almiron, CAM, Atlanta United FC; Diego Valeri, CAM, Portland Timbers (80).

Major League Soccer has a handful of players above the 80 rating threshold, though all of them are imported from other leagues. Still, it's nice to see emerging talent like the record-breaking Josef Martinez make the grade as he looks to finish what he started in the goal-scoring stakes. He famously smashed the longstanding record for goals in a single season back in late-August and currently sits on 30 with four regular-season games remaining.

Relax, you're in safe hands

Best hands: Jan Oblak, GK, Atletico Madrid (92). Thibaut Courtois, GK, Real Madrid (91). Manuel Neuer, GK, Bayern Munich (88). Gianluigi Buffon, GK, Paris Saint-Germain (87). Samir Handanovic, GK, Inter Milan (86).

Worst hands: Tim Schneider, GK, KFC Uerdingen 05; Keegan Smith, GK, Wellington Phoenix (44). Eight players tied on 45.

The ratings differentiating goalkeepers arguably have the widest spread when it comes to players sharing a particular number, and nowhere is this more clear than in the Handling stat. Mighty Jan Oblak leads his peers when it comes to catching and holding the ball, whether from set pieces, shots on goal or defending crosses. In short, does he catch or parry balls into the box?

The 47 Club

David Norman Jr., CM, Vancouver Whitecaps; Alec Byrne, CM, Cork City; Lee Watkins, CM, Cambridge United; Kieron Olsen, RB, Carlisle United; Noah Christoffersson, ST, Trelleborgs FF; Ma Junliang, CM, Guangzhou R&F; Zhang Yufeng, CM, Beijing Renhe; Alexander Kaltner, ST, SpVgg Unterhaching; Christoph Ehlich, RB, SpVgg Unterhaching; Josh Lundstram, CM, Crewe Alexandra; Kotaro Fujikawa, CM, Jubilo Iwata; Shandon Baptiste, CM, Oxford United; Jordan Young, ST, Swindon Town; Pierce Phillips, CM, Cork City

Of course, there is fresh life beneath the rarified air of the top players. There are 14 players who qualify for the hallowed "47 Club," those unlucky enough to be bestowed with the lowest OVR rating in the game. Cork City, of the Rep. Ireland Airtricity League, and third-tier German side SpVgg Unterhaching have the dubious honor of having two players each in this hallowed club.

And finally, the Golden Hoof Award

Lincoln City center-back Jamie McCombe wins this prize for having the lowest dribble ability in the entire game. With a 24 rating, it's best just to ask him to punt it immediately upon receiving possession.http://kwese.espn.com/football/blog/espn-fc-united/68/post/3645558/ultimate-fifa-19-preview-best-playersfastest-and-sloweststrongest-and-more

Euro 2024: Germany beats Turkey to host tournament

Germany has beaten Turkey to host Euro 2024 after a vote by Uefa's executive committee on Thursday.

The two countries made final bid presentations before voting took place in Nyon, Switzerland.

The decision means Germany will stage the European Championship for the first time as a unified country, with West Germany having hosted the 1988 tournament.

Turkey is yet to host a major international football tournament.

It has seen previous attempts to host the Euros in 2008, 2012 and 2016 fail, as well as the 2020 Summer Olympics. Germany staged the 2006 World Cup.

'The procedure was transparent'

Euro 2024 will return to a single-host format after Euro 2020 is held across Europe, including Germany.

Before announcing the winner, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said Germany and Turkey had made "very strong bids".

After announcing the winner, he added: "The procedure was transparent. The voting was democratic. Every democratic decision is the right decision so I can only say I am looking forward to seeing a fantastic Euro in 2024."

Euro 2024 will feature 24 teams, taking place in June and July, with 51 games scheduled for up to 32 days.

Berlin will stage the final, while matches will also take place in Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart.

Former Germany captain Philipp Lahm, an ambassador for his country's bid, said: "We have amazing stadiums, fans who love football, first and foremost we have people who love celebrating with other Europeans.

"We will organise a huge football party in Germany."

Germany and Turkey were the only countries in the running for Euro 2024 and, in the build up, an evaluation report by Uefa stated Turkey's bid had risks.

The report added that Turkey's lack of an action plan in the area of human rights and limited hotel capacity in many cities were matters "of concern". It also labelled the scale of transport infrastructure work required "a risk".

However, it did say the Turkish bid was "in line with the long-term objectives of Uefa."

ANALYSIS: NEW APPS AND THREE LITTLE WORDS HELP PEOPLE WHO DO NOT “EXIST”

Billions of people all over the world live without an official address or identity, and it makes almost everything in life difficult or impossible. But new technology allows everyone to tell where they live - with just three words.

OTHER CATEGORIES

Region: Global

Theme: Demography & MigrationNew Technology

All Danish citizens have a little yellow plastic card with our health insurance and our civil registration number on it. Most people probably think about it as a right to public healthcare, but it gives us many more rights than just that. The ten digits on the yellow card that follow us from cradle to grave represent a great privilege. About 1.5 billion people live without an official identity. They have never been registered anywhere and do not have a birth certificate or other kinds of identification papers. The problem is greatest in Asia and Africa, where centralised and efficient systems for registering the country’s citizens are often lacking.

The list of challenges caused by not having paper proof of your own existence is almost endless. You will find it difficult to create a bank account, have your children enrolled in school or access social and health services. And a very fundamental issue is not being able to vote in elections. People without papers are often people without a voice. For this reason, the UN, as part of the 17 Global Goals wishes to make sure all human beings on the planet get free access to legal identity, including birth registration, by 2030. But for this mission to succeed, new innovative methods must be taken into use.

Some of those methods have been put into use in Pakistan, where about 60 million children have not been registered at birth. The unregistered children are vulnerable to child labour, childmarriage, and trafficking because there is no evidence of their identity or age. The missing registration is due to both social and economic factors. In sparsely populated areas, the authorities’ offices might be physically distant. But the distance to a mobile phone is often not very far in Pakistantoday – even in remote regions. For this reason, UNICEF ??and Telenor made a pilot project in 2014. Together with the local authorities in the rural areas Punjab and Sindh, they developed an app for direct registration of births. Local staff, such as health workers, were equipped with the app, and within six months the proportion of registered births increased from 30 percent to 90 percent. The project is now being implemented all over Pakistan and the project is aiming for 700,000 registered births by the end of 2018.

Another widespread issue in many parts of the world is the lack of a registered address. Three out of every four countries in the world do not have any efficient, systematic address register, and the UN estimates that about four billion people do not have an officially registered address.

This creates similar problems as for those who do not have a legal identity – without an address you can’t fill out the forms necessary to open a bank account, vote in elections or even get your house connected to the water and electricity grid. Ultimately, inefficient or non-existent address systems hinder growth and development because it makes everything difficult and affects people’s opportunities and lives on many levels.

Chris Sheldrick was in the middle of a promising career as a musician when he accidentally injured his arm and had to change profession. One thing he didn’t miss from his life as a musician “on the road” was the never ending frustrations of driving in circles to find the address of the concert venue for the gig of the night. Although the GPS is invented, the 16 digits are hard to remember, and there’s always the risk of typing in the number wrong. Together with two friends from the chess club at the prestigious private school Eton College in England, Sheldrick developed the app “what3words”. The system divides the world into no less than 57 trillion squares of 3×3 metres each. Each square has a name consisting of three randomly chosen words. For example, the words with.harp.person will lead you to the White House in Washington DC and luring.ignoring.wipes to the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.

The system can of course be used by anyone, but especially for people without formal addresses in developing countries this has revolutionary potential. Any small cottage in rural areas or a shed in a slum now has its own “address” consisting of three words that anyone can remember, and everyone can find using the what3words app. According to the inventors, what3words is so far used by the post office in Mongolia, Djibouti, Tonga, Saint Martin and Ivory Coast. The system is also being used by organisations such as the UN and the Red Cross during disasters and accidents. For example, it’s helping rescuers to accurately locate injured persons. What3words also won the Danish Design Award ’Index Award’ in 2017. The award is dedicated to design that proposes sustainable solutions to global challenges – and “what3words” has the ability to offer this.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix - what the trailer tells us

In the two-minute trailer of X-Men: Dark Phoenix we see Jean Grey as a child, the X-Men attend a funeral and they make a trip into space.

This film focuses on the story of Jean Grey - now played by Sophie Turner - and her relationship to Phoenix and how it affects her mind and body.

The storyline is a crucial part of the comics and we've seen a version of it before in X Men: The Last Stand.

The trailer is a nice taster of what we can expect from the film but it also leaves a few questions unanswered.

1. Who is Smith?

Image copyright20TH CENTURY FOX

Image captionJessica Chastain plays Smith

Near the start of the trailer we see the actress Jessica Chastain, with blonde hair and dressed all in black.

She goes into a church and is seen talking to Jean.

She tells her: "You feel like you don't belong. You don't."

It's not clear who Smith is but from the trailer, we're guessing she's a villain.

There is a character called Tabitha Smith in the Marvel Comics, but we will need to wait for more trailers to know exactly who she is.

Fans are also confused about this one.

2. Unsurprisingly, they're embracing the dark theme

Image copyright20TH CENTURY FOX

Image captionYou see a dark side to Jean Grey

When the film's called Dark Phoenix, it's not a massive shock that the tone is a lot darker.

Jean Grey is heard in the trailer saying: "They're right to fear me."

In the comics and other films, Jean has always struggled with her powers and in the trailer you see her flipping over police cars and bringing down a helicopter.

We also get a glimpse into her childhood.

Image copyright20TH CENTURY FOX

Image captionJean as a young girl

A very young Jean is seen in the back of a car with her parents and they're involved in a car crash.

There is the suggestion that she may have had a hand in her parent's death.

The music in the trailer is a version of a 1967 song called This is the End by The Doors.

The lyrics include the line: "This is the end, beautiful friend, this is the end, my only friend, the end."

3. Professor X isn't perfect

Image copyright20TH CENTURY FOX

Professor X is always trying to help people and fix everything, but it seems like he can't always do that.

Beast and Mystique both question some of his actions.

Mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence, says: "Charles, what did you do?"

Has Professor X been messing with Jean's mind in an attempt to try to help her?

He replies: "I had to keep her stable, I protected her."

Beast also loses his temper with Charles, telling him: "This is your fault."

The Professor is then seen sitting by Jean's bedside and says to her: "I'm sorry I didn't stop it sooner."

4. People swap sides

Image copyright20TH CENTURY FOX

Magneto or Professor X - whose side to choose? This has always been a bit of a struggle for some of the X-Men.

In this film it seems to be Jean's turn.

She finds Magneto who's camping out somewhere with his group. Military helicopters swoop in and Jean uses her mind to control them.

The falling out between Beast and Charles must be serious, because he is also seen on team Magneto.

It looks like there maybe a stand-off between Beast, Magneto and two others versus Prof X, Nightcrawler, Storm and Luna.

We also the see the X-Men in uniforms square up to Jean in a street.

5. The X-Men go into space

In the Marvel comics the phoenix force comes from space and that might be why the X-Men make a trip to space in this film.

They're seen in a spaceship wearing their blue jumpsuits with a yellow X on the front.

We don't know much about their trip to space or what happens there, but Charles looks like he is sucked into a ball of fire. Could this be the Phoenix?

6. Someone dies

Beast and Professor X are at a funeral, Storm and Nightcrawler are also there.

They're at the grave site, but we have no idea about who has died.

It may be one of the X-Men, we will have to wait until February when the film comes out to find out.

Hugh Hefner's daughter Christie opens up about keeping Playboy founder's legacy alive

This article originally ran on July 12, 2018. It is being revisited on the one year anniversary of Hugh Hefner's death.

For Christie Hefner, visiting the Playboy Mansion was a child’s dream.

Christie, 65, continues to have fond memories of her many visits to the original opulent adult playground in her father's native Chicago.

The domain for Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner and his bunnies was based in the Windy City from 1959 to 1974.

LIFE ADVICE FROM HUGH HEFNER

Hefner would move on west and the new Playboy Mansion was then based in Los Angeles. He sold that property in 2016 but was allowed to live there until his death in 2017 at age 91.

“What made it magical was that it had a trap door,” Christie told Fox News. “It had a secret panel. It had a game room where every game was available without ever having to put a quarter in it. It had a fireman’s pole. It was just a really cool place if you were a kid. It had a bowling alley, an underground pool — it was pretty fun.”

And while Hefner was busy leading a publishing empire, he also was willing to take part in pursuing his other passion — playing games.

“He loved playing games,” stressed Christie. “When I was younger, we used to play Monopoly with a group of friends. He got very into Backgammon. Very into pinball. He was definitely one of those people who wasn’t very into sports but was a constant game player, and I would add, a highly competitive game player.”

But life wasn’t always fun and games for Christie. People magazine noted she ran the family business alongside her father for 26 years until 2009. And in 1979, she established the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Awards, in conjuction with Playboy’s 25th anniversary.

The awards aim to honor those who have made significant contributions in protecting First Amendment right for all Americans.

This year’s ceremony, the first since Hefner’s passing, took place June 4 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The Lifetime Achievement Award was granted to Joan E. Bertin, longtime executive director of the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC).

Christie said the awards continue to celebrate her father, a man who was determined to protect civil rights in his lifetime.

“I think one of the things that led Playboy to its success was that it was based on the philosophy of ideas around social justice and personal freedom,” she explained. “And the company’s activities over many years, whether it was syndicating TV shows with an integrated cast in spite that Southern stations wouldn’t accept the programming… to launching the careers of African-American artists. I think it’s fundamental to who he was and what Playboy is, a deep belief in social justice and personal freedom.”

The New York Times reported the Playboy Philosophy advocated freedom of speech in all its aspects. Hefner also supported progressive social causes and even lost some sponsors after he invited black guests to its televised parties at a time when much of the nation still had Jim Crow laws in place.

In a 2009 interview with Time magazine, he revealed, “I’m not an active feminist, I’m an active humanist. I separated ways from the American feminist movement when they became anti-sexual. I believe embracing sexuality is a part of what it means to be free.”

And Hefner wasn’t shy about embracing ideas that were taboo. In 1955, just two years after Playboy launched, Hefner published a short story titled “The Crooked Man,” which depicted a dystopian future where homosexuality ultimately becomes the norm. The science fiction piece immediately sparked backlash.

“Here is obviously a heterosexual men’s magazine,” explained Christie. “And it would have been so easy to completely ignore the issue or frankly, do what a lot of media did for many years, which is to approach the attitude of gay rights as something to sort of be made fun of or not to be respected.

"But early on, because of my father’s beliefs, Playboy took a completely different attitude… Playboy was a safe place, a place that took chances and it attracted the kind of people who were willing to put a stake in the ground in support of things that might have been ahead of the time.”

Christie admitted Hefner “was not an advice-giver.” Still, he shared one piece of advice from his experience in running Playboy that she still follows today.

“Don’t be afraid to be around smart people and ask questions,” she said. “He would say, ‘I don’t have an MBA, but I have an MBWA – Management By Walking Around.'”

Throughout his life, Hefner was frequently criticized for launching a brand that some believe sexually objectified women. Christie said the work of Playboy should speak for itself.

“I think the record is pretty clear of not just the work of the foundation in terms of providing grants for the Women’s Rights Project and the Gay Rights Project, but also walking the walk,” she said. “Men can both desire and admire women and it’s not about wanting to live on a planet where there’s no sexual attraction or no flirting or dating. It’s about wanting to live on a planet where there’s mutual respect and open communication.

“I’ll never forget very early on this Playboy Advisor question. This was so many years ago that I’m not even sure the phrase ‘date rape’ had entered the vernacular. And the Playboy Advisor writing back in effect… [said] women had the right to say no, even if her panties are off.

"The point of view of the magazine was always that women are to be respected. That doesn’t mean they’re not beautiful and they’re not to be admired. I think that’s the world both men and women want to live in.”

Despite the ongoing criticism Hefner endured throughout his lifetime for his bold outlook on American society and sexuality, he was not a person of regret.

“Later in life he was asked about that,” said Christie. “He said… ‘There were small decisions that if I had to do all over again, I might have done it over. Maybe business decisions, or other things, yes. But on the big decisions? Am I really happy and satisfied with my life and how it turned out? I couldn’t be happier.’

“He saw the bigger arc of his life. He was eternally boyish and delighted by all that had happened to him, all that he was able to make happen. He never became jaded or cynical in the way that sometimes people who have fame or financial success do. He never took it for granted. Never traded in his friends… His core circle of friends were people who like to watch classic movies and play Gin… I think he was grounded in a way that allowed him to feel very satisfied with his life.”

Babies Born With Big Heads Are More Likely To Be Successful, Study Finds

Growing up, you may have been teased by your siblings for your large head; suffering cruel nicknames such as ‘Melon head’ and ‘Lollipop’.

However, now you can hold your head up high (if your neck can take the weight) with the knowledge your big head holds the secret to your inevitable dizzying success.

Researchers have suggested babies born with large noggins are more intelligent, with a greater chance of becoming educated and living a successful life.

Your mum was right all along (as per usual). Those pea heads are all just jealous of you and your fabulous coconut, which is literally brimming with brains.

Mind Blowing Facts About The Internet

Research conducted by UK Biobank – a biobank study which investigates the relation of genetic predisposition and environmental exposure to developing diseases – has suggested higher intelligence is connected to a large head circumference and brain volume.

UK Biobank monitors half a million UK residents to determine the link between their genes, their physical and mental health, and the direction their life will take.

For this study, researchers from the UK, Germany and the US, led by the University of Edinburgh, analysed UK Biobank data from 100,000 Brits between the ages of 37 and 73. Over half a million samples were used from previous studies.

Participants had been examined in various ways, with researchers testing factors including their verbal and numerical reasoning skills, reaction time (RT), memory and educational attainment.

Fascinating Studies About Human Beings

The resulting paper, which was published in the Nature journal, Molecular Psychiatry, concluded:

Highly significant associations were observed between the cognitive test scores in the UK Biobank sample and many polygenic profile scores, including […]intracranial volume, infant head circumference and childhood cognitive ability.

As reported by the Independent, the average head size for a newborn baby is 36 cm for boys, and 35 cm for girls.  Babies with bigger than average heads are more likely to become boffins.

What You Never Knew About The Brain

The findings of this study are said to be so accurate, the size of a child’s head can even predict the likelihood of him or her entering higher education. Crikey.

UK Biobank has claimed:

Over many years this will build into a powerful resource to help scientists discover why some people develop particular diseases and others do not.

Director of the Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology (CCACE) at Edinburgh University, Professor Ian Deary, told Neuroscience News:

In addition to there being shared genetic influences between cognitive skills and some physical and mental health states, the study also found that cognitive skills share genetic influences with brain size, body shape and educational attainments.

Researcher Dr Sarah Harris added:

The research highlights the importance of investigating biological pathways that influence both cognitive function and health related traits.

So go forth and be proud of your gigantic head, and wear all the eye-catching, bonce-enhancing hats you can.

But don’t get too proud, otherwise, you might not be able to fit your already humungous head through the front door…

Man With Rare Condition Explains How He Died For Six Minutes

23-year-old Tyler has the energy, humour, and dreams of any able-bodied twenty-something, but he has the rare condition of spinal muscular atrophy (SPA).

Despite meaning that he can’t move around on his own or lift anything that weighs more than three ounces, the resilient guy from Omaha, Nebraska, is eager to not let the degenerative motor neuron disorder get in the way of his aspirations.

Tyler’s SPA means that his armpit touches his hip, and he describes his body as a ‘boomerang’ due to how his spine and ribs are bent.

Here is a video of our interview with Tyler:

Man With Rare Condition Reveals How He Died For Six Minutes

SPA is a genetic rare neuromuscular disorder characterised by loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting.

As well as suffering with this disease, Tyler had an incident where he died for six minutes.

Explaining the situation, Tyler said to UNILAD:

It was a very odd situation, we went to hospital and they said ‘you’re very nauseous, there is a black liquid in your stomach, we’re going to have to pump that out’, and I said okay.

As they were doing that, I blacked out, and I woke up 40 minutes later and the room was full of people.

I was like ‘well, this isn’t good’, and yeah so the next day my aunt asked me if my chest hurt, and I said ‘yeah, how do you know?’ and she said ‘well, you had CPR’.

I was like ‘what now?’ I said for ‘how long?’ and when she told me six minutes I was like ‘HUH?’.

I wasn’t aware of it, but I was having some very odd visualisations and they made a little bit more sense as I was told that.

UNILAD

Tyler has turned this traumatic situation into a really strong example of his resilience.

He said:

The fact that a 65 pound 20-year-old endured CPR for six minutes and is still living.

I think that is a testament to how stubborn people with disabilities can be. How resilient they are.

As well as being physically resilient, Tyler’s mindset is inspiringly positive.

He explained that he feels he was blessed with a “‘If I can’t fix it, why be upset about it?’ kind of attitude” which has served him well.

After losing a bet with a friend, he actually ended up doing a stand-up comedy show and enjoyed every second.

Stand-up comedy is a terrifying thing, but Tyler explained:

It was a dare at first, my friend said ‘you’ve got social anxiety haven’t you?’ and I said ‘yeah’, and they said ‘Why don’t you do comedy?’.

So I did it and honestly loved it. The fact that I can take something so negative and make people laugh about it.

I think it’s a classic cry or laugh situation.

UNILAD

He explained how comedy is his way of fight public misconceptions about disability:

The public mostly has misconceptions about disability in general. They just kind of look at you and dismiss your cognitive abilities because of your physical ones.

Now that I’m in comedy, it’s fantastic because I get to be all creative with them and point it out in various ways and make people embarrassed.

In terms of a reaction to my comedy, I get everything from ‘Oh my god why did you say that?’, to people laughing.

People don’t know if they can laugh at my comedy show. It’s like ‘no why are you guys saw aw, I’m on a stage’.

The main concern about Tyler’s health is that his lungs are okay, but his diaphragm is affected so what the doctors worry about is the muscle responsible for controlling his breathing will get worse.

Though the condition is degenerative, Tyler’s type two has the largest age range. He recalled knowing someone who passed away younger than him, but also someone who was 20 years his senior.

UNILAD

Looking to the future, he dreams of continuing comedy, but also starting a non-profit organisation to create a transportation device for disabled people that goes the extra mile.

He explained his idea:

There’s a dream non-profit that I’m going to start, I just need to have the right ears and eyes on it, because once I start it, I want to make sure it’s effective.

What I want to do is create a transportation for the disabled that doesn’t just restrict them to going to a doctor appointment or the grocery store, but independence beyond that.

24/7 operation, because as is now in the States, you’re subjected to public transit times.

It’s like being told ‘hey at 9pm you can no longer use your legs’. When you get to a certain age, your life becomes more than just school and doctor’s appointments.

UNILAD

The heart-breaking fact about Tyler’s degenerative condition is that there is a cure, but it costs well over a million pounds.

Tyler explained that for the first year of seven shots of Spinraza, a treatment that addresses the underlying cause of motor neuron loss, costs an outrageous $750,00.

Once again the unjust pharmaceutical companies are allowed to charge extortionate prices that most people simply can’t afford.

That is only for the first year, you then need three shots in the spine per year, costing a whopping $125,00 per shot.

Hopefully they make treatment more affordable for inspiring people like Tyler.

The aspiring NPO-owner also said he’d be looking for any business advice and guidance to help him.

Sri Lanka's Pidurangala Rock: Bare bums stir trouble.

Sri Lankan police have arrested three men who were among a group who took semi-nude photos of themselves at an ancient sacred site.

The young Sri Lankan men posted the images of themselves at Pidurangala Rock on Facebook.

It prompted an angry reaction from people who considered them a religious insult, reports BBC Sinhala's Azzam Ameen in Colombo.

Similar photos were posted on Instagram by foreigners, who were not arrested.

The arrests follow a complaint by a Buddhist monk who claims the photos, taken within sight of the Sigiriya rock fortress, a Unesco World Heritage site, are a religious insult.

Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also ordered police to carry out an investigation, Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror newspaper reported.

'Brown bums'

The viral photos taken by foreign travellers were posted on the Cheeky Exploits Instagram page, an account that encourages people to take pictures at famous locations around the world.

While many have commended the police for taking action for insulting a religious place, others have criticised it.

"When our children are being raped and women being abused, Sri Lankan police do nothing. They only seem to act on nonsensical non-issues like this," a Facebook user said.

Others questioned why police only took action against locals, not foreigners.

"So law enforcement should only be limited to brown bums? Sri Lanka Police should send several teams around the world to identify the rest," wrote another Facebook user.

This is not the first time nude pictures near sacred sites have drawn condemnation from local communities.

In June 2015, a group of Western tourists climbing Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia caused massive outrage and a subsequent deadly earthquake was blamed on their disrespect towards the sacred mountain.

It was only after court proceedings, a few days in prison and a financial penalty that the tourists were allowed to leave Malaysia.

In 2017 a Playboy model took part in a nude shoot on New Zealand's Mount Taranaki, angering Maoris who consider the mountain to be the burial ground of their ancestor.

Newly crowned Miss Ukraine yanked of title after pageant officials discover she is a divorced mom

Veronika Didusenko, who was named Miss Ukraine, was recently stripped of her title after officials discovered she lied about being a divorced mother.  (Instagram)

Veronika Didusenko, who was recently named Miss Ukraine at the country's national beauty pageant, was stripped of her title after pageant officials learned that she lied about being a divorced mother in her application.

Didusenko was crowned the winner of the Miss Ukraine pageant in the country's capital of Kiev on September 20. But her reign as queen didn't last long after the pageant committee decided that she was to be disqualified on Monday.

The Miss Ukraine organization released a statement regarding the 23-year-old's disqualification which said, "In accordance with the Rules for conducting the National Beauty Contest Miss Ukraine, a person who wishes to take part in the National Beauty Contest 'Miss Ukraine' must comply, among other things, with the following requirements (valid for the period of the Contest): – not / was not married; – has no children."

The pageant statement continued,  “The same requirements are indicated in the official form, which is contained in the unified rules and conditions of participation in Miss World contest 2018.”

According to the statement, Didusenko, who works with children in Ukraine's Young Einsteins program, failed to mention that she had a 4-year-old son and has previously been married -- both are against the pageant organization rules for contestants.

The young pageant contestant recently took to Instagram to thank fans for their support "at such a difficult time."

Many Instagram users reacted to the model's post. One user sided with the former queen and wrote, “I do not think that the child and the family should be an obstacle to their dream."

While another disagreed and stated that the rules were rules for a reason.

“The rules are the same for all, and Ukraine did not come up with them, but the founders of this world competition," another user said.

As of now, a new Miss Ukraine to take Didusenko's place has not been announced, but a new queen will reportedly be chosen on September 30 in a special television broadcast, according to a press statement released on the pageant's organization website

Spurs' new stadium 'will be greatest ever built' says chief engineer.

Tottenham's new stadium will be "the greatest that's ever been built", says one of the chief engineers working on the delayed project.

The new 62,000-seat arena was due to open on 15 September.

It means Spurs play Watford in Milton Keynes on Wednesday because their usual temporary home - Wembley Stadium - is not ready after last weekend's Anthony Joshua fight.

"We've tried to do something in double time," engineer Nick Cooper said.

"If you look at any other project of this nature you wouldn't have achieved as much as we've achieved with the stadium.

"Be patient with us, we understand the frustrations."

Contractor Mace has claimed faulty wiring is behind the delay, while Spurs have not given a new completion date. Manager Mauricio Pochettino said he is "confident" it will be ready this year.

"It's been radio silence from the club," says Pete Haine, secretary of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust in reference to the lack of an official date for the first game.

"I can understand their point of view. I can understand the fact they don't want to commit to another date and then fail to meet it.

"As fans we'd like to know, we'd like some certainty. If it's going to be next year then fine. Tell us. We can plan for that."

The situation has been compounded for season ticket holders due to incompatible ticketing systems between the new stadium and Wembley - requiring fans to claim a refund from the club for games that have moved and then having to buy a new ticket for the game at Wembley.

Last month the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said that he hoped to announce an opening date as soon as possible.

"We are all focused on ensuring contractors deliver our new stadium in the shortest possible period of time and opening our stadium at the earliest opportunity," Levy said.

"We are now being regularly updated on progress and as soon as we have confidence in our project managers' and contractors' ability to deliver against the revised schedule of works, we shall be able to issue dates for test events and the official opening game."

Cooper said the pitch will be laid next week, indicating that the stadium could be nearly ready.

Built in virtually every corner of the UK - how Tottenham's ground is coming together

  • The stadium will feature the world's first dividing, retractable grass pitch built by a Leicester-based firm. Underneath will be an artificial NFL surface - all part of Spurs' grand plan to provide a world-class venue for both sports.
  • The Sky Walk, a unique visitor attraction which will allow people to climb the exterior of the stadium up to 40 metres high, has been manufactured by a Midlands-based construction company.
  • Six 70-metre trusses capable of extending across the pitch will suspend 950 powerful lights to help grow the grass. The trusses then all fold away, collapsing under the subterranean NFL pitch.
  • The three pitch trays which form the retractable grass pitch were manufactured across Yorkshire by a Sheffield engineering specialist firm.
  • The stadium steel works were made by a Lancashire-based company who also worked on the Olympic Stadium.
  • The concrete panels featuring the club crest, positioned at the north entrance of the stadium, were cast in Scunthorpe.
  • Spurs claim the local economy will be boosted by £293m each year and 3,500 jobs created across the entire stadium scheme to handle an expected two million visitors per year.
  • 258 affordable homes have been built nearby and money has been ploughed into a partnership with nine independent schools to create the London Academy of Excellence, which is connected to the building that houses the club's new offices.

'I was lost at sea three times': How one Indonesian teen defied fate.

An Indonesian teen was recently rescued after spending 49 days adrift at sea in a fishing hut. But as Aldi Novel Adilang reveals to BBC Indonesian, it's not his first tale of survival.

Aldi Novel Adilang, 18, has survived not once, twice, but an incredible three times at sea.

However his latest ordeal was by far the longest and has captured global attention.

He was working on a floating fishing trap, known locally as a rompong, which is shaped like a hut and floats in the middle of the sea but is anchored to the seabed by ropes.

On 14 July, he was anchored some 125km (77 miles) off Indonesia's Sulawesi island when the rope tethering him to the seabed snapped - sending him adrift.

"My rompong's rope snapped after it rubbed against my friend's rompong," said Mr Adilang, who spoke to BBC Indonesian from his parents' house near the city of Manado in North Sulawesi. "Unfortunately he was asleep so he didn't know I was adrift."

During the first few days, he survived on his limited food supply. But it only lasted for a week.

"Rice, clean water, spices, cooking gas, and other supplies ran out. To survive I caught fish and burned the rompong's wooden fences to make a fire for cooking. I even ate raw fish," he said, smiling.

His other challenge was getting clean water.

His solution? He wet his clothes in the sea and then drank seawater through it, using it as a makeshift filter. He claims that by doing so, the salty taste of seawater would be reduced.

'Help, help'

In the 49 days he was adrift, up to 10 ships passed by. None of their crews noticed him.

Alone at sea, he sang Christian songs, read the Bible he carried and kept praying hard, wishing to be able to see his parents again.

He admits that at one point he felt depressed and even considered drowning himself. But he kept himself going through prayer.

On 31 August he spotted a ship carrying coal.

"At that time, I cried 'Help, help'. That's the only thing I knew," said Mr Adilang, who was unaware that he had floated all the way from Indonesia to the waters of Guam in the Pacific.

The crew of the Panamanian-flagged vessel rescued him and gave him a change of clothes and water to drink.

Mr Adilang stayed in the vessel for a week until it reached its destination, Japan.

He arrived in Japan on 6 September and flew back to Indonesia two days later, where he was reunited with his family.

'Never again'

Mr Adilang says his two earlier experiences of being stranded at sea were much shorter.

"The first [time], I was afloat for a week and helped by the owner of the raft. The second time, I was afloat for two days and also received help from the owner of the raft."

There is no safety or navigational equipment on the rompong - he didn't even have a compass.

His job had been to light the rompong's lamps, which are designed to attract fish.

Every week, the teenager would be brought fresh supplies of food, water and fuel by someone from his company who would come to collect the fish.

He signed a one-year contract and was paid $134 (£101 each month).

After his latest experience, however, Mr Adilang said that this time he has promised himself that he will never sail again.
