Five teenagers, including three 14-year-old boys, have been charged with murdering a man in Nottingham.

Esrom 'Hanny' Ghide, 20, was found stabbed in Hawksley Road, Hyson Green, on Wednesday. He died of his injuries in hospital.

The three boys, along with two others aged 16 and 17, are due before Nottingham magistrates on Monday.

In a statement, Mr Ghide's family said he "was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished".

They added: "His passing has left a big hole in our lives."

US Open 2018: Serena Williams accuses umpire of sexism after outbursts in final

Serena Williams accused the umpire of sexism in docking her a game in the US Open final and said she had not been cheating.

Naomi Osaka's 6-2 6-4 victory was overshadowed by Williams' extraordinary outbursts in the second set.

She received a code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racquet abuse and a game penalty for calling the umpire a "liar" and a "thief".

Afterwards the American said it was "sexist" to have been penalised a game.

"He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief'," the 36-year-old former world number one added.

"But I've seen other men call other umpires several things.

"I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff."

The issues began when Williams' coach Patrick Mouratoglou made a hand gesture towards her early in the second set at New York's Flushing Meadows.

On-court coaching is allowed in WTA events but not in Grand Slams with the rules saying "communication of any kind" between player and coach is banned.

Williams denied she received coaching saying she would "never cheat to win and would rather lose" and demanded an apology from the umpire Carlos Ramos.

Mouratoglou, however, later admitted coaching.

Three games later Osaka was awarded a point when Williams was given another code violation for smashing her racquet.

Williams was furious, walking up to Ramos, shouting and pointing at him as the crowd started booing in support of the American in a toxic atmosphere.

At the next change of ends, Williams continued to rant, calling Ramos a "liar", telling him to "say you are sorry" and describing him as a "thief" for awarding a point to Osaka.

"For me, it blows my mind," the 23-time Grand Slam champion said. "But I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have equal.

"This is just an example for the next person that has emotions, that wants to express themselves and wants to be a strong woman.

"They're going to be allowed to do that because of today. Maybe it didn't work out for me, but it's going to work out for the next person."

'I was not being coached'

Mouratoglou started coaching Williams in 2012

After the match Mouratoglou admitted he was coaching but added: "I don't think she looked at me". He also said Osaka's coach was doing the same and that "everyone does it".

In her post-match news conference Williams said she was she "was not being coached" and that she "did not understand" why Mouratoglou would say he was doing so.

"I just texted Patrick, like, 'what is he talking about?' Because we don't have signals," she said.

"We have never discussed signals. I don't even call for on-court coaching [in WTA events].

"I'm trying to figure out why he would say that. I don't understand. I want to clarify myself what he's talking about."

'I didn't know what was going on'

Naomi Osaka was in tears at the situation during the post-match ceremony

Before Williams' outbursts Osaka had dominated the first set in her first Grand Slam final, against a player she describes as her idol.

Throughout the second set she stayed composed in a difficult atmosphere to become Japan's first major winner.

Afterwards, the 20-year-old said she "didn't know what was going on" between Williams and the umpire.

"I was just trying to focus," said Osaka, who was seeded 20th.

"Since it was my first Grand Slam final, I did not want to get overwhelmed.

"Serena came to the bench and told me she had a point penalty and when she got the game penalty I didn't know that either.

"I was just trying to focus on myself at that time."

Swedish election: Vote held amid anti-immigration surge

Swedish voters are set to vote in a general election dominated by the rise of an anti-immigration party.

The nationalist Sweden Democrats (SD), which polls suggest have 20% support, are tipped for second place, eight years after they entered parliament.

Neither the governing Social Democrats nor the main centre-right party is likely to win a majority.

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has accused the SD of extremism and said that a vote for it was "dangerous".

Immigration has been a central issue of the campaign. The SD doubled its seats in the 2014 election and it is predicted to double them again in this election.

Image captionPM Stefan Löfven has vowed to fight "extremism"

"Dark forces are mobilising in Sweden," Mr Löfven said in his final rally on Saturday. "The hateful forces are mobilising now in Sweden and agitating people against each other."

SD leader Jimmie Åkesson countered that Sweden had been "an extreme country in many ways, not least when it comes to immigration" and that his plan to take in fewer migrants would be regarded as "normal politics in the rest of Europe".

Who are the Sweden Democrats?

The SD was linked for years to neo-Nazis and other far-right groups, only entering parliament in 2010.

It has been working to rebrand itself, changing its logo from a flaming torch (similar to the one used by the UK far-right National Front) to a blue-and-yellow daisy, the colours of the Swedish flag.

Image captionJimmie Åkesson of the Sweden Democrats after Friday's heated party-leader debate

Traditionally appealing to working-class men, it wants to attract more women and higher-income voters.

Mr Åkesson, who became leader in 2005, says there is zero tolerance towards racism in the party and several members have been expelled.

However, the party has still been embroiled in various racism scandals.

One municipal candidate shared a song on Facebook with the lyrics "Swedes are white and the country is ours", according to a report in tabloid Aftonbladet.

Last year, some of its ex-members went on to found the far-right Alternative for Sweden (AfS).

What are the key issues?

Sweden's economy is booming but many voters are concerned that housing, healthcare and welfare services have come under pressure from a wave of immigration during the 2015 migrant crisis.

That year Sweden took in a record 163,000 asylum seekers - the highest such intake in the EU, per head of population.

Sweden's traditional parties have since hardened their tone to reflect concerns about integration.

Many voters are also concerned about violence. The SD links a rise in shootings to increased immigration, although official figures show no correlation.

The SD also wants to leave the European Union and has proposed a "Swexit" referendum. However, the powerful centrist parties all oppose such a vote, so it is unlikely to go ahead.

Aside from immigration, climate change is an issue many Swedes care about - particularly after a long, hot summer and severe forest fires.

During the heatwave, around 25,000 hectares of forest burned in wildfires and many farmers were forced to destroy livestock after their pasture land dried up.

Media captionSwedish teen's sit-in climate protest

Support for the Green party, which had been struggling after various internal scandals, has crept up across the country.

The Left party is making gains too, from the environmentally concerned and from centre-left voters dissatisfied with the mainstream parties' approach to migration.

Who could be in charge?

Prime Minister Lofven currently heads a minority, centre-left coalition government made up of his Social Democrats and the Green Party.

In recent years there has been a fall in support for the Social Democrats and the largest traditional opposition party, the centre-right Moderates.

However, polls suggest that the Social Democrats are narrowly ahead of other parties and may be in a position to lead another minority government.

Both the Social Democrats and the Moderates have said they will not enter a coalition with the SD, however well they perform.

Toronto Film Festival: Hate U Give lead found casting criticism ‘hard’

The star of the film version of novel The Hate U Give has admitted she found it hard to have her casting queried because she is not darker-skinned.

"It was the first time in my life that I'd ever had my blackness questioned," Amandla Stenberg told reporters at the Toronto Film Festival.

"I've never thought of myself as not being black enough," she went on.

The film tells of a girl who witnesses the fatal shooting of an unarmed friend by a white police officer.

The incident makes her question her place in both her predominantly black community and the private school where she is one of few non-white students.

She also faces opposition over her determination to testify against the police officer responsible.

Last month the artist who illustrated the cover of Angie Thomas's best-selling novel said she "wasn't exactly thrilled" by Stenberg's casting.

"I was hoping it would be a very brown-skinned actress, because there's so little opportunities in these big movies for darker-skinned actresses," said Debra Cartwright.

Image captionDirector George Tillman Jr says he wants The Hate U Give to "inspire and create dialogue"

Her comments followed a debate on social media over whether the film was guilty of colourism - prejudice against people with a darker skin tone.

Speaking on Saturday, Stenberg said she was sympathetic to that viewpoint and had considered turning down the lead role of teenager Starr Carter.

"I have a great sensitivity towards the place from where that [viewpoint] comes, a place of pain," the 19-year-old said.

"It's a result of people being frustrated because they're navigating a colourist system at all times.

"There was a point in time when I went to Angie and said 'If you agree with these concerns and feel I don't accurately represent Starr, tell me and I will drop out'.

"And she said, 'What?' She said she had never questioned I was not the right person."

More from the Toronto Film Festival

Hunger Games star Stenberg has drawn praise from critics for her work in the film, which opens in the UK on 26 October.

Image captionStenberg's character witnesses a fatal shooting

The Guardian said George Tillman Jr's film was "anchored by [her] heavyweight performance," while Variety saluted her "star-making turn".

Speaking on Saturday, Tillman Jr said he had wanted to make the film as "honest" and as "authentic" as possible.

The director of such films as Soul Food and Biggie Smalls biopic Notorious said he hoped it would both "inspire and create dialogue".

"I never wanted this story to be sanitised," said Thomas of her 2017 debut novel, which was inspired by a real-life police shooting in 2009.

"Angie wrote an amazing book with a lot of depth and heart so our main goal was to capture that," said Stenberg, adding that she hoped the film would make young black women feel "validated, empowered and strong."

The Toronto Film Festival continues until 16 September.

As we sit here, waiting for the RTX 2080 and the rest of the Nvidia Turing lineup, we’re faced with a tough choice: do we wait for these new cards in all their exorbitant glory? Or, do we just go out and buy the best graphics cards we can get right now? Regardless of your choice, you can still use the best graphics cards to play the most demanding games from Far Cry 5 to Dragon Quest XI.

You should consider, though, that the best graphics cards are available in every shape and size. That’s why we went ahead and created this list of the best graphics cards – so you’ll be able to find exactly what you’re looking for. We’ve sorted through the dozens of cards we’ve tested and reviewed, and picked out only the ones that stood above the rest. So, no matter if you prefer the raw power of Nvidia or the driver stability of AMD, we’ve found the best graphics cards you can buy today.

Brilliant 1080p performance

Great overclocker

 No SLI compatibility

In the past, we’ve mentioned that the best graphics card is going to be the one that offers the most performance for your money – it’s still true. This is why the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is far and away the best graphics card on the market when it comes to sheer value. For a modest sum of cash, this GPU allows users to experience full HD 1080p and – maybe with a bit of overclocking – 1440p and even 4K gaming. However, the gTX 1060 doesn’t support SLI, so you’re limited to just one card.

Titan X-like gaming performance

Improved cooling

A pricey investment for most

The Nvidia GTX 1060 may give you the most performance per dollar, but the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti turns all the dials up to 11 for the ultimate 4K gaming experience. Now, on paper it kind of seems like a tuned up Nvidia GTX 1080, this graphics card can almost dethrone the Titan XP as the world’s most powerful consumer GPU, thanks to its high-speed video memory and a dramatically higher CUDA core count. It’s still no match for two GTX 1080s in SLI, but this single card is cheaper and supports a larger pool of games. If you’re looking for one single part to run your games at 4K, the GTX 1080 Ti is the best graphics card you can buy.

Masters 1440p gaming

Vastly improved overall performance

Significantly higher energy draw

Gets hotter than the Nvidia GTX 1070

Going down a few rungs in the graphics card hierarchy, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is the best graphics card for QHD gaming. This card finds the happy medium between the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. Whereas the 1080 is too expensive for 1440p gaming and the 1070 isn’t quite there, the GTX 1070 Ti perfectly drives a QHD experience. In our own testing, this piece of kit handles Forza Motosport 7 at upwards of 93 frames per second at 2,560 x 1,440. Likewise, it can manage Shadow of War at over 60 with the same ambitious resolution.

 Maxed out 1080p performance

High energy consumption

Runs a tad hot

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 is the best graphics card for Full HD gaming you can buy today – your benchmarks put it above the GTX 1070. And, now that it’s fallen in price to  what we would call an ‘acceptable’ level, there’s never been a better time to pick one up. While it’s arguably a bit overkill for Full HD gaming, the RX Vega 56 will come in handy for 144 to 240hz monitors and future-proofing against increasingly demanding games. You can also expect a fantastic 1440p experience with this card.

Best VR graphics card: AMD Radeon RX Vega 64

AMD’s return to high-end graphics cards

Impressive benchmark results

GPU tuning control

Higher energy draw than Nvidia Pascal

Especially now that it’s fallen in price from the heyday of cryptocurrency miners, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 is the best graphics card for VR gaming. Boasting 4,096 stream processors, 256 texture units and 8GB of HBM2 memory, it’s every bit as competent as the Nvidia GTX 1080 – at a lower price. This truly is the AMD card to rule them all.

World’s smallest 1080 Ti

SLI support

Inferior performance

Runs hot and loud

When you build a microATX or even a mini ITX gaming PC, you don’t have to settle for anything other than the best graphics cards – you can find mini GPUs like the Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Mini. You’ll sacrifice some performance over its full-sized counterpart, but when it measures in at 211 x 125 x 41mm, the performance loss will seem practically non-existent when you’re staring at your beautiful mini PC.

Solid 1080p performer

Good overclocking potential

Greater than 75W TDP

Any eSports player will tell you that high frame rates are far more important than beautifully rendered graphical details – and that’s where the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti shines. In a time where graphics cards cost as much as rent, it’s an affordable, but potent GPU that can play most eSports games well above 60fps. It’s a bit pricier than the lower-end Nvidia GTX 1050, but you’ll appreciate the extra power behind this card to play future eSports titles, as well as the odd AAA title.

The Apps, Tools and Sites Every Freelancer Needs

Taking the plunge into freelancing is both an exciting and anxiety-ridden prospect for most working professionals. Being your own boss certainly has its perks, but how do you make sure you’re prepared to run every aspect of a company -- alone? Fear not, for in the age of the internet, anything is possible. And there’s totally an app for that.

Related: How to Easily Up Your Skills and Make More Money

While it’s true that even modern freelancers need to be flexible to fulfill many roles, they can also work smarter, and more efficiently, to maximize their strengths with digital tools. I hunted down the tools that make freelance pros' lives easy breezy, so that you don’t have to.

Maximum productivity, minimum headaches

You know it, I know, we all know it -- keeping track of the time is hard. Even if you’re expertly employing pomodoro breaks and timeboxing every bite of your lunch hour, we all have days where time just gets away from us. The tools here range from agile-type software for tracking projects on platforms that clients can join to sites specifically for small-business owners that are more about keeping all your contracts, jobs, and timelines, in one place.

Toggl

Toggl is a productivity device that tracks your time on projects, helps you figure out how to better manage that time and provides progress reports for you to fill out as you work.
Price: Starts at $9/month and offers client review features, progress tracking for your projects and reporting on how well you utilize your day-to-day time.

Trello

Trello also helps you organize your goals by providing easy flow charts where you can break down projects into to-do lists and track progress.
Price: The free plan gets you unlimited boards to work off of and the ability to link projects to outside platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox.

Freedcamp

Freedcamp is what you need if you’re routinely working with larger teams. Keeping tasks private? Check. Gantt chart options so you can see the overview of larger projects? You got it. Collab-friendly? Totally.
Price: the free plan offers unlimited storage, time tracking and a messaging board, among other features. Got a bigger company? Just level up to one of the larger plans.

Notion

Notion has one of my favorite designs of any of the programs listed here -- I’m a sucker for a sparse, clean layout -- but it’s more than just aesthetically pleasing. Notion will link everything from Github to Trello all in one place, so that your projects are organized in easy-to-read lists.
Price: The free plan gets you 600 blocks (one block could be a to-do item, a line of code, an embedded file, etc), unlimited mobile blocks (when you use the app on your phone) and offers priced plans for larger companies who want more space and features.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp drastically cuts back your time spent marketing, with easy-to-automate services like email campaigns, and provides feedback on who your customer base is, what they’re buying or interacting with, and how you can better capture their attention.
Price: The free plan offers you a 2,000 subscriber limit, and the option to send up to 12,000 emails per month.

MeetEdgar

MeetEdgar is a social posting management system that you can back load content into, and then let run across however many platforms you want. As much as we all love scrolling on Facebook, wouldn’t you rather someone else take care of all that posting?
Price: $49/month -- with a 30-day trial period -- gets you a library where you can add as much content as you like, schedule it across all your platforms and post however often you’d like.

Zervant

Zervant’s invoicing software has customizable templates, and gives you the opportunity to keep track of your finances with free reports. It’s less comprehensive than Honeybook, but it certainly gets the job done when it comes to accounting.

How Living and Learning Abroad Makes You a Better Entrepreneur

Ansel Adams, renowned photographer and naturalist, once said that “in wisdom gathered over time, I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” Adams timeless statement perfectly captures the reality that the best learning (and the most poignant wisdom) is honed through a lifetime of active engagement and experimentation.

Adams’ sentiment is still very much alive and well today, and is especially applicable to entrepreneurs in one particular way: go abroad to explore and, in the process, build your career (and yourself) overseas. Given that our world is an increasingly interconnected, globalized workplace, there’s no better time than now to challenge yourself abroad.

Let’s take a look at two benefits that you pick up from living in a foreign environment, as well as the one critical mindset that enables it all.

Related: Living the Dream Overseas: Would You Work Abroad?

Working abroad improves your problem solving and creativity.

It’s well established that working and studying abroad can make you more creative, entrepreneurial and mentally agile. Essentially, working in a new country and culture provides a host of mental benefits, such as flexibility, problem solving, deep thinking and an improved ability to discern subtle underlying connections and associations.

There are many reasons for this, but the critical factor is novelty: as an evolutionary trait, humans crave new experiences. One study centered around a problem-solving game where adults could match and pick select pictures for cash prizes, had a surprising result: it found that participants often went for new options, even over tried-and-true choices that had yielded cash in previous rounds. Thanks to MRI scans, researchers soon discovered the reason behind this puzzling behavior: apparently, choosing new tiles were associated with spikes of brain activity in areas–suggesting that people are, after all, hardwired to seek out the unfamiliar.

A similar dynamic is at work when you go abroad, whether for travel, study or work. From living in an unfamiliar nation with a different culture, your brain will have to deal with a flood of unexpected, exciting stimuli, forcing it to form new neural connections in the process, and strengthening your overall mental capabilities.

Ultimately, it boils down to this: the more experience you have with different cultures, the faster you can generate creative ideas and link seemingly unrelated concepts. Experiencing diversity is clearly the best way to jumpstart your brain’s latent talents, pushing it (and hopefully your career) into overdrive.

Cultural experience can help your career.

Globalization and world trade have deepened ties between countries. In 2016, America imported $2.3 trillion worth of goods and exported $2.7 trillion of products overseas, mostly capital goods like aircraft and industrial machinery, along with industrial supplies and consumer goods.

Economies that are interdependent to a degree never seen before need skilled, culturally savvy individuals to navigate this complex business ecosystem. Those who have done business in foreign nations have a leg up on competitors who have never ventured abroad.

Consider this: if a company wants to break into the Japanese market to sell their new pharmaceutical product, who would they pick to spearhead this initiative? Someone who has lived in Japan, worked in the Japanese office of a major firm and understands the business environment and popular tastes? Or someone who has absolutely no knowledge of the target market, aside from what she read online?

Cultural awareness and adaptability are invaluable, especially when it comes to expanding into new nations and regions where you’ll undoubtedly have to make a good impression. In this case, you don't need to speak Japanese fluently, without an accent, or master its three writing systems (Kanji, Katakana, and Hiragana). A little knowledge of local traditions and the willingness to experiment will carry you very far.

Related: What You Need to Know Before Taking a Job in a Foreign Country

Success abroad requires engagement and adaptation.

Working abroad boosts your cultural understanding and sharpens your higher-order skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving. For maximum effect, approach your time abroad with an open mind.

In a 2013 study of students in an international MBA program, researchers in France, Israel, Singapore and the United States concluded that ,ultimately, multicultural engagement is the key variable predicting later career success. Multicultural engagement nurtures versatility: those students who adapted to, learned about and immersed themselves in foreign cultures were much more likely to reap prestigious job offers from top firms. The researchers made clear that, even among individuals from similar backgrounds, those who actively engaged with their new situations received more (and better) job offers.

These findings were backed up by studies from Columbia Business School, which found that accepting ambiguity and diversity in the form of cultural differences helped people understand that there are various solutions for problems and an array of goals worth achieving.

Living and working abroad helped me.

On a more personal note, I lived in Asia for 10 years, eight of which I spent in Japan. My experience abroad proved to be fulfilling and enlightening, helping me hone and improve a number of hard and soft skills.

Foremost amongst these was patience. No one would have accused me of being a particularly patient person when I moved to Asia. I had the standard listening skills and patience of a typical type-A personality, which is a byproduct of working in the dynamic, fast-paced field of real estate investment.

But living abroad in a new land soon taught me the importance of forbearance, as well as the value of empathy -- a critical trait when cultural differences are at work. I learned that communication is particularly complex when multiple perspectives and customs are involved. I also realized that the best communicators and negotiators understood this complexity. Even when they didn’t agree with the other side they always took these variables into account. Such people are all the more successful for it.

Today, I’m not sure that I’m a “model citizen” in that regard, but I’m still far better than I was two decades ago. Living abroad was crucial for both my personal and professional development. At the very least, I came to understand and appreciate how diverse perspectives can really impact a project for the better, strengthening a team’s creativity and problem-solving skills.

Living and working abroad, done right, will yield some wonderful benefits for your career and personal development. Life begins outside your comfort zone, and there is no better way to leave your comfort zone than by leaping into a work or study opportunity in a foreign country.

Unwanted Goldfish Can Find A New Home At Paris's Biggest Aquarium

Paris's biggest aquarium has created a refuge for goldfish, providing a second life for any unwanted pets who might otherwise find themselves flushed down the toilet.

The Aquarium de Paris allows the city's residents to drop off their fish, with the numbers using the service swelling around the time of the long summer holidays.

Instead of facing death in the city's sewerage system, the rejected goldfish find themselves given a full medical check up involving antibiotics and anti-parasite treatments.

After a month in quarantine, during which a minority succumb to the trauma caused by the change in location, they are then released into a giant tank where they go on display to the public.

"Some of them arrive very weak," said Celine Bezault, who cares for the fish at the giant aquarium complex which is located opposite the Eiffel Tower.

Since it was created two years ago, the goldfish rescue service has been used by around 50 people a month and the tank now contains about 600 specimens, mostly the classic golden-red version, as well as striped and black ones.

Rather than spending all day banging into the glass of a small bowl, here the fish have space to swim and plenty of company, allowing them to socialise and move around in groups.

Some owners hand over their pets tearfully, motivated by concern for their fish, while others appear relieved to be rid of them and the routines of feeding and cleaning.

"It was in a small bowl and I think it'll be better here," a 32-year-old called Alexandre told an AFP reporter as he dropped off a friend's goldfish called Nemo before the holidays. "It's better than flushing it away."

- New life -

Once in the bigger tank, some of the fish undergo a remarkable transformation.

Being confined in a bowl stunts their growth, but the bigger space means some of them will expand to full adult size.
"They can reach up to 20-30 centimetres (8-12 inches)," Bezault said.

For Alexis Powilewicz, director of the Aquarium, the service is part of efforts to to promote awareness about animal welfare.
Goldfish are domesticated forms of wild carp originally found in east Asia and the practice of keeping them in bowls has existed for hundreds of years. It is thought to have originated in China.
"I think there's growing awareness that the mistreatment of animals is a real problem," Powilewicz told AFP.

For goldfish owners, the aquarium advises that the tank should be at least 100 litres (20 gallons), should contain more than one fish, as well as a filtration system and decoration.

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has long campaigned against keeping goldfish in bowls or giving away fish in plastic bags as prizes at funfairs.

In 2004, the Italian town of Monza made headlines when it banned putting goldfish in bowls, while Switzerland has animal rights legislation that makes flushing a fish down the toilet illegal.

For those who dispose of their pets in ponds or rivers, scientific studies have found that some goldfish thrive afterwards -- but at a cost to the local ecosystem because the fish are an invasive non-native species.

In 2015, officials in the western Canadian province of Alberta launched a "Don't Let it Loose" campaign, pleading with locals to stop releasing goldfish into the waterways.

The ethical disposal service available at the Aquarium de Paris is aimed at offering an alternative.

Owners are also able to return afterwards to try to spot their former pets: quite a challenge in a tank of 600.

Dwayne Johnson Endorses Jeffrey Dean Morgan for DC's Lobo Movie

Dwayne Johnson has endorsed Jeffrey Dean Morgan to play DC's Lobo on the big screen. The Rock actually has a history with the role that goes back to 2012 - when the wrestler-turned actor was in talks to star in a Lobo movie for Warner Bros. and DC, with Johnson's Journey 2: The Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton calling the shots from his own script.

Peyton's Lobo movie ultimately fell apart and the filmmaker later reunited with Johnson on the 2015 earthquake disaster thriller San Andreas, instead. The pair worked together for a third time on this year's Rampage, an adaptation of the popular video game property that starred Johnson as a primatologist who attempts to save his friend - a rare albino gorilla who is mutated into a giant monster by a genetic experiment gone wrong - with the help of a scientist (Naomie Harris) and a U.S. government agent played by Morgan.

Related: Dwayne Johnson To Play Kamehameha in Robert Zemeckis' The King

During his recent appearance at Walker Stalker Con, Morgan expressed a desire to play Lobo in a movie, calling the DC antihero a "badass". Word of this soon reached Johnson, who responded with an affirmative "Hell yes" to the idea on his Twitter account - giving his "official" endorsement to Morgan for the role, in the process.

Johnson is currently attached to star in DC's Black Adam solo movie, which he will also be producing. The mega-star may hold some actual sway on the matter of casting Lobo for that same reason and, at the very least, could put in a good word for his Rampage costar Morgan with the top brass at WB/DC. That's assuming they don't mind Morgan playing Lobo after he cameoed as Thomas Wayne in Batman V Superman - a role that Morgan once hoped to reprise in a Flashpoint movie that, by the look of things, may no longer be happening.

advertising

What's less clear, however, is whether a Lobo movie is part of WB and DC's current game plan. The studios offered the film to Michael Bay earlier this year, but all concerned parties decided to pass until Lobo's budget can be cut down from an estimated $200 million. WB is moving forward with a Joker origin movie (starring Joaquin Phoenix) that isn't part of its DC cinematic universe, along with Suicide Squad spinoff Birds of Prey (featuring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn) and Black Adam in the meantime, so it clearly isn't giving up on movies featuring DC antiheroes/villains like Lobo altogether.

advertising

As for Morgan: he's as logical a choice for the role as most anyone, given the knack he's shown for playing foul-mouthed and violent, yet charismatic, characters in the vein of Lobo - namely, as Negan on The Walking Dead and Lobo's fellow cigar-chomper The Comedian in Zack Snyder's Watchmen movie. Who knows, with The Rock in his corner, Morgan may get to fulfill his wish of playing the intergalactic bounty hunter yet.

Wildfire races across Northern California counties, shutting down parts of I-5

Another raging and rapidly growing wildlife this week in North California has prompted evacuations,  road closing and massive fire response, the US forest service said.

The Delta fire started wednesday and had expanded to nearly 2500acres by Friday evening. Energized by dry, warm conditions and gusty winds, the blaze rapidly moved across grass, timberland and brush.

It is in the same parched region of the state where the Carr fire killed eight people this summer destroying more than 1000 homes and consuming 229,651 acres according to California fire officials.

Portions of interstate 5 north of Redding have shut through Sunday morning because of the fire. The highway extends from the Mexican border with California to the Canadian border with Washington state.

"The Delta fire continues to burn along both sides of the freeway with increased activity during the nighttime hours", the California Highway patrol said.

More than 15,00 firefighters have been deployed to fight the Delta wildfire. As of early Friday,  there was no containment.

The forest service said the fire began two miles north of Lakehead in shasta County and classified the cause as "human".  It is not clear whether the fire was deliberately set or accidentally started.

The sheriff's offices in shasta and Trinity Counties have issued evacuation orders,  and the siskiyou County sheriff's office warned some residents to evacuate. All those countries are near southern Oregon.

Structures are threatened, and there are reports of abandoned and burning rigs.

"Fire activity will increase as a dry cold front approaches from the northwest with increased southwest wwinds", the forest service said in an incident report".

Google's new $50 gadget is the best way to keep your accounts safe

  • Google recently launched a new Titan security key that helps add extra security to your account.
  • Only someone with the key can access your Google account, or others you've configured, like Facebook and Dropbox.
  • The $50 bundle gives peace of mind, but losing the keys could mean being locked out of your accounts for days.

Google is now selling a special $50 key that adds an extra layer of security when you access important online accounts. It's called the Titan Security Key, and I recently started using one.

Here's why it matters: Normally, you might just use a password to log in to all of your online accounts, like Gmail, Facebook and Dropbox. That's not very secure, even if you use a different password everywhere. Maybe you've upped your security to two-factor authentication, which can send a text message to your phone that's required in addition to a password each time you log in. But even that isn't as secure as the Titan Security Key.

Instead, Google's Titan Security Key is a piece of hardware that acts as the master password for everything you need to access. Just don't lose it.

I tested it out and it's pretty neat. Here's what you need to know.

The Titan Security Keys

The Bluetooth Titan key on the left, and the USB version on the right.

The Titan Security Keys meet standards set by the FIDO alliance. You don't need to know much more, other than the alliance publishes secure specifications and certifications that other companies can use to add another layer of security to their products.

With keys like the ones Google has — they're called FIDO U2F (Universal Second Factor) — users can help prevent phishing attacks, so-called man-in-the-middle attacks (where someone might intercept that special two-factor text message) and more.

You still need to enter a password to access your account but then, just like a home key or a set of car keys, you need the physical key to gain entry to your account. You can't just use a password.

Google specifically recommends that IT administrators, journalists, activists, business leaders and political campaign teams use these sorts of keys. Google says the FIDO U2F protocol, which its Titan keys support, is so secure that it hasn't had "a single reported or confirmed account takeover due to password phishing" since it started using them with its own employees.

The keys are simple to use

Plug it in and tap this button to log-in.

Google sent me the $50 Titan Security Key bundle to test.

The bundle includes two types of keys: one that plugs into your USB port and one that connects to phones with Bluetooth.

Setup was a cinch. I just went to Google's two-factor authentication page, chose the option to add a new security key and then plugged each key into my computer, one by one. Google took care of the rest in a matter of seconds, and told me I was all set up.

Now, whenever I log into my Google account, either on my own computer or one I might be borrowing, I need to first enter my password and insert the USB key into the computer and tap a small gold button on it. If I'm logging into Gmail on a phone, I just tap the button on the Bluetooth key. If I don't have the keys, I can't get in to my accounts.

Google is adding NFC support later this year, which will let you log in to your Google account on an Android device by tapping the key to the back of your phone. For now, Bluetooth works just fine on Android and iPhone.

Logging in to Gmail on a phone is a cinch.

Other sites take advantage of these keys, too, including Facebook and Dropbox. You just need to dig into the security settings of the services you want to connect and select the option to use a security key, if there is one. Unfortunately, many sites and services don't support the key yet.

Don't lose the keys

I like the peace of mind it gives me, knowing that it's much harder for someone to break into my most important online accounts, like Google.

On the other hand, I'm seriously worried about losing the Titan Security Key. It's tiny, and while I can connect it to a keychain, sometimes I accidentally misplace it. (Who hasn't lost their keys?) Also, the Bluetooth module needs to stay charged, and Google suggests that you don't ever let it fully drain. It's best to plug it in whenever you sit down at a computer.

Also, while I like that it was built by Google and should theoretically be catered to keep your account even more secure than other options, you can buy similar keys for about $20 each.

If you lose the Titan Security Key, you can try to gain access again from a computer where your account is still logged in, or waiting three to five days for Google's help resetting your password. That's the price you pay for added security, though.

one month to his wedding

Heartbreaking

Handsome Ghanaian soldier dies one month to his wedding

Isaac Darko | 13:06 | 08.09.2018

Lieutenant Felix Tei Sormenah had been on admission at the hospital but while loved ones prayed for his recovery death rather came calling.

All deaths bring pain to the loved ones of the deceased but some bring more pain than others. Such is the case of the death of a Ghanaian soldier who reportedly died on Friday, September 7.

Lieutenant Felix Tei Sormenah had been on admission at the hospital but while loved ones prayed for his recovery death rather came calling.

But the painful aspect is that Sormenah reportedly knocked down by a car on September 4. Though the impact was so hard the car's driving mirror yanked off, the driver failed to stop.

Of more pain is the fact that the handsome-looking Sormenah was set to get married to his fiance, Maame Efua Addison, on October 6.

According to award-winning journalist Mabel Aku Banaseh who shared the news on her Facebook page, the late soldier was a fine brain with a promising future and it is hurting that he is no more.

In a lengthy post on Facebook, Mabel wrote:

"I took particular notice of him because he was busy moving up and down to ensure all things go well at my young sister’s wedding reception on April 28, 2018 Lt.

Felix Tei Sormenah, a friend of my sister’s husband, was a reflection of what true friendship was on that day It was all joy when he turned up with his fiance at my residence the following day after church service for lunch Lt.

Sormenah was billed to marry on October 6, 2018, but something tragic has happened to him He was knocked down by a vehicle.

We were all hoping for his speedy recovery after his surgery so we can witness his big day But alas, my sister called me and delivered the chilling news amidst inconsolable tears This fine young man died today before 12 noon. I feel pained. It hurts to lose such a fine brain with a promising future.

He left behind his sorrowful parents, a grief stricken fiancée, siblings, family members, friends and loved ones. Felix, your friends, loved ones and those of us who barely knew you are heartbroken.

God knows why this has happened. His ways are not our ways. I leave you in the hands of the Creator. May you find eternal rest in God’s bosom.

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj feud turns physical at New York party

A simmering feud between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj came to blows at a New York Fashion Week party on Friday evening.

The scuffle began after rapper Cardi approached Minaj over "lies Nicki was spreading", celebrity website TMZ said.

She was allegedly elbowed in the face by a security guard, before throwing a red-heeled shoe at Minaj, who appeared unscathed from the incident.

After Cardi was escorted out barefoot with a bump above her eye, both stars took to social media after the clash.

Eyewitnesses told US media the altercation took place on the first floor balcony of the Harper's Bazaar ICONS party, during a performance by Christina Aguilera.

Cardi, who was wearing a red Dolce & Gabbana gown, is seen in social media video lunging forward after reality TV star Rah Ali, a friend of Minaj, stepped in between the two rappers.

Report

Within seconds, security guards separated the entourages.

Minaj, who recently released her fourth album Queen, later shared pictures of herself posing in a leopard print ball gown.

Cardi, however, addressed the incident with her rap rival in a statement on Instagram (which contains swearing).

The rapper, who has achieved huge success over the last year with hits such as Bodak Yellow and I Like It, said she had let a lot of things slide.

Media captionCardi B left with a bump above her eye after an altercation with Nicki Minaj's entourage at New York Fashion Week

Cardi did not mention Minaj by name but said, "I let you sneak diss me, I let you lie on me, I let you attempt to stop my bags".

She also accused 34-year-old Minaj of threatening other artists in the industry, allegedly telling them if they worked with Cardi, she would sever ties with them.

"I addressed you once in person, I addressed you a second time in person, and every time you copped a plea!!"

Cardi then explained: "But when you mention my child, you choose to like comments about me as a mother, make comments about my abilities to take care of my daughter" that is when the rap star said all bets are off.

She ended her note by saying she had worked too hard and come too far to let anybody mess with her success.

Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, gave birth to her first child Kulture in July.

The 25-year-old pulled out of her tour with Bruno Mars later this year, admitting she had "underestimated this whole mommy thing".

At the MTV music awards in August, Cardi B made comments that were perceived as a barb at Minaj's expense.

The two rappers had previously denied there being a rift between them, despite repeated suggestion of subtle digs in each other's lyrics.

Strictly Come Dancing: 14 things we learned from this year's contestants

Tess is back. Claudia is back. Craig Revel Horwood's death stare is back.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday, with Shirley Ballas, Bruno Tonioli and the newly-Damed Darcey Bussell back on the judging panel.

We've been speaking to this year's celebrities about everything from the show casting its first YouTuber to accusations the line-up is too D-list.

Here are 14 things we learned from 14 of this year's 15 contestants (Katie Piper was absent from the press interviews).

1. Graeme Swann's wife isn't too concerned about the "Strictly curse".

In other words, about him copping off with his professional dance partner.

"No, she's not [worried], she knows I'm punching well above my weight already," the cricketer laughs.

Image copyrightPA

Image captionVick Hope and Graeme Swann

"She's got nothing to worry about. I've got the perfect little home with three great little kids."

Graeme's children were, in fact, one of his biggest motivations for taking part.

"I want to be super-dad still, and I'm losing it as they get older - I'm losing my powers, so I'm trying to get some credence back."

2. Joe Sugg doesn't mind if you've never heard of him.

(But still, it's probably best your nan learns what a YouTuber is pretty sharpish.)

"I'd be naive to think that everyone in the UK knows me, it'd be ridiculous," the 26-year-old says.

"As the first sort of online YouTuber person to go on this, I knew there'd be a lot of talk about it, but I was so prepared, I don't take myself too seriously, it's all fun."

Image copyrightPA

Image captionLee Ryan and Susannah Constantine

3. Susannah from What Not To Wear is excited about The Things She'll Get To Wear.

Along with co-presenter Trinny Woodall, Susannah Constantine fronted the popular TV fashion series from 2001-2005.

Asked if she's excited for the costumes she'll be wearing on Strictly, she replies: "Oh you have no idea!

"The attention to detail, the way everything is cut. I mean, they are master seamstresses those women.

"I'm following their lead, but I have a couple [of rules], which is no high necklines, and I don't want to show my arms. I'll do anything else."

4. Blue's dance routines weren't exactly difficult so Lee Ryan hasn't really got that much of an advantage when you actually think about it.

Every year, pop stars get a bit of heat for having an unfair advantage in Strictly, given their previous dance experience.

But asked whether Blue's choreography might come in handy for his dances, Lee says: "Absolutely not!

"If they go to me 'lean, wink, airgrab' I'll get 10 points!" he jokes. "I wake up going like that. It's like a brain reaction in the morning."

Image copyrightPA

Image captionLauren Steadman, Danny John-Jules and a large piece of pink confetti

5. Danny John-Jules's gym has re-opened.

"I've never been so famous," laughs the Red Dwarf actor, days after he went viral for tweeting about a police incident at his local gym.

After turning up to find it surrounded by police cars, Danny began posting live updates on social media from the gym in north London.

"In 40 years, I've never had so much publicity", Danny says, but adds the gym has since re-opened and he's able to crack on with some training.

However, with Strictly's 10 million weekly viewers - he'd better get used to a higher profile.

6. Don't Cha wish your dance moves were hot like Ashley's?

It's fair to say Nicole Scherzinger hoovered up most of the vocal parts in the Pussycat Dolls, leaving the other five members to focus on the rather complex (and graphic) dance routines.

This, you could argue, means Ashley Roberts is one of the contestants with an advantage, but, she points out: "The little booty smacks and booty popping I don't think is allowed in the Latin and ballroom world.

"It's just so foreign to what my body has done. I do have rhythm so it might be a little bit easier for me to possibly pick up a step but it is still a new skill that I do not know that I am going to have to learn."

(Strictly is, however, introducing a new couples' choice category this year, which will let the pairs choose from new dance styles including contemporary, street and theatre/jazz.)

7. Kate Silverton's dancing has previously been described as "a worm trying to shed its skin".

But, the BBC News presenter adds, it's comforting to know how many other journalists (like Natasha Kaplinsky and John Sargent) have been popular with Strictly viewers.

"Traditionally, [newsreaders] have done quite well and I'm just taking that as a good omen because I've danced in a nightclub with Chris Hollins, and so he was obviously very good, I was in the dark so it was fine."

Comedian Seann Walsh, meanwhile, says he dances "like a shed in the wind".

We are so here for these analogies.

8. Lee and Susannah have no time for criticism of the line-up.

This year's Strictly has been accused of not quite having the same star wattageas previous series.

"It's just like, for [goodness] sake. I'm sorry, but get over yourself," says Susannah when this comes up.

"Really this is a great show. We are all really privileged to do it. It's a fun show, it's entertainment and we're all here to do our best. So just get over it."

Lee reasons: "I think that you have to expect some kind of negative opposition to this whole machine, and what it is, and the show.

"It's the biggest show in the world. People are gonna go out there and say I hate it but they're still going to watch it."

Image copyrightPA

Image captionSeann Walsh and Kate Silverton

9. Vick Hope is probably going to be the most tired contestant this year.

Bearing in mind she'll be juggling Strictly training with co-hosting Capital's breakfast show.

But, she says: "It's cool, we've got this.

"I'll be getting up at 04:30, getting into the studio at 05:30, do the show from 06:00 til 10:00, Roman [Kemp, her co-host] will make fun of every time I've fallen over on TV."

She adds: "I've just got to say no to nights out, just got to say no."

Probably best to steer clear of Kate Silverton and Chris Hollins in that case.

10. Stacey Dooley is glad to be doing something a little less serious.

As a documentary maker, Stacey doesn't often venture into the world of sequins and salsa.

"Work's quite serious for me, so this is totally different tonally," she says.

"So that makes me feel nervous and apprehensive, but also that's why I took part, because I think it's good to push yourself and enjoy the frivolous and the escapism and the fun."

Image copyrightPA

Image captionCharles Venn and Faye Tozer

11. Charles Venn should probably consider buying a season ticket for the London to Cardiff train.

The Casualty star isn't planning to swap acting with Argentine tangos - instead, he's going to do both.

"Yes, afraid so. I'm juggling both jobs at the moment so I'm oscillating between here and Cardiff," he explains.

"When the opportunity presented itself I said yes and it was very much a shoot first and ask questions later... but we'll make it work."

12. Dr Ranj from This Morning is ready for the inevitable doctor routine.

References to contestants' jobs often sneak into their dances on Strictly, and Dr Ranj Singh is already thinking of how this might impact on his.

"It's obvious isn't it, there's definitely got to be a Doctor, Doctor song somewhere," he laughs.

"There's got to be an Indian dance as well, I've already said that, I'd love to do that."

Image copyrightPA

Image captionJoe Sugg and Katie Piper

13. Faye from Steps is going to miss having H from Steps by her side.

"I usually have H next to me saying 'it's okay, you've got the job, you can do this'," the singer says, adding that her bandmates have all wished her well.

"They're made up for me, they know I've been banging on about doing this show for years, and when I finally told them they were over the moon.

"So hopefully we're going to get them in the audience - all apart from Lisa, she'll be waving from over the sea because she's in Dubai."

14. Paralympian Lauren Steadman is using a "completely different set of muscles" to what she's used to.

"Everybody would assume, being athletes, that we're fit or we're stronger," says the Paralympian.

"But they're asking me to bend in ways I don't normally bend in... even after one dance rehearsal two weeks ago I was like 'I can't move'."

She adds: "I'd like to inspire others with disability and women that feel it's outside of their comfort zone. And to just come away with a skill that I wouldn't have had if I hadn't been on the show, I will hopefully inspire people to go outside of their comfort zone."

Strictly Come Dancing begins on Saturday at 19:35 BST on BBC One.

HIV vaccine human trials leave scientists 'cautiously pleased'

Scientists are cautiously optimistic after a trial HIV vaccine showed promising results in initial tests on humans. A study published in medical journal The Lancet examined the effects of the vaccine in 393 test subjects, who were chosen from 12 HIV clinics in East Africa, South Africa, Thailand and the US. Seven groups were given different combinations of the vaccine, while one group was administered with a placebo. All subjects who received a vaccine responded by producing some form of immune response against HIV during the course of testing. READ MORE HIV ability to cause Aids is 'becoming weaker' A side-study carried out by researchers tested strains of the vaccine on rhesus monkeys for resistance against the simian-human immunodeficiency virus, a disease similar to HIV that affects monkeys. The most effective vaccine combination was found to protect 67 per cent of monkeys used in the trial against the virus. As the tests were deemed successful, a second round of trials is now taking place on a group of 2,600 women in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr Dan H Barouch, a principal investigator on the study and a professor at Harvard Medical School, said he was “pleased” with the research, but urged the results should be treated with caution. “I would say that we are pleased with these data so far, but we have to interpret the data cautiously,” he told CNN. “We have to acknowledge that developing an HIV vaccine is an unprecedented challenge, and we will not know for sure whether this vaccine will protect humans.” Close to 37 million people worldwide are thought to be living with either HIV or Aids, of which more than two million are children.

Dogboe wants unification fight with Roman in London

Isaac Dogboe wants a unification fight back in the United Kingdom with Eddie Hearn's super-bantamweight signing Daniel Roman.

Dogboe made the first defence of his WBO title in American last month with a sensational first-round stoppage of Hidenori Otake.

The 'Royal Storm' immediately turned his attention to facing another of the recognised title holders at 122lbs with Hearn's Roman, defending his WBA 'World' strap against Gavin McDonnell, live on Sky Sports on October 6, top of his list.

"We feel the excitement will come when two champions are in the ring together and we have the likes of Daniel Roman and Rey Vargas (WBC), and I believe these guys will make me great.

"It would be great to have a fight here in the UK and I believe the easiest option would be Roman because Eddie [Hearn] has signed him, so he can bring him to England. Isaac Dogboe against Daniel Roman would be great.

"It would be a great match-up. He's very strong, he likes to fight and I also like to come forward too. Let's meet in the middle.

"Roman is a great fighter. He likes to come forward and fight and I think it will be one of those 50-50 fights where no one knows what will happen. I believe Bob Arum can work with Eddie Hearn to bring the fight here," he noted.

Preview of Kenya vs Ghana

Ghana travel to tackle Kenya in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday at the Kasarani stadium in Nairobi as they seek for an eighth straight appearance at the finals.

Despite being the favourites to win Group F which also have Ethiopia and Sierra Leone, the Black Stars need to beat the Harambee Stars to consolidate their perfect run in the qualifiers.

The four times AFCON winners humiliated Ethiopia with a 5-0 thrashing in the first group game.

Kenya were 2-1 losers to Sierra Leone in their first group fixture and would want to make amends this weekend by beating Ghana to bright their chances of making it to Africa's flagship tournament for the first time since their last appearance in 2004.

Ghana's biggest victory in football history was against Kenya in 1965 where the Black Stars walloped the Harambee Stars 13-2 in an international friendly in Mombasa.

Kenya beat Ghana in 2003 in an international friendly played in Accra.

It is their only victory over the Black Stars in seven clashes. Two have ended in a draw and four wins to Ghana.

TEAM NEWS

Black Stars trainer Kwesi Appiah made the journey with twenty players excluding all-time top scorer and skipper Asamoah Gyan along with Andre Ayew and his brother Jordan Ayew.

The only new face in the squad is Royal Antwerp's Williams Owusu who could be making his Ghana debut on Saturday if selected.

After four years absence from the national team, Inter Milan midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah makes a return and is expected to make an appearance against the Harambee Stars on Saturday.

The Eastern Africa nation has been dealt a big blow since star player and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama couldn't turn up due to an injury.

ZESCO United's Anthony Agay Akumu is expected to fill the big void left by Wanyama.

ZESCO United duo David Owino and Jesse Jackson Were look very doubtful for starting roles on Saturday due to injuries they are carrying.

KENYA'S TACTICS

Sebastien Migne will be facing the Black Stars with a 4-4-2 formation when attacking and 4-3-3 when defending.

With Anthony Agay Akumu replacing Victor Wanyama, Belgium and Sweden based Johanna Omollo and Eric Johanna along with Gor Mahia’s Francis Kahata will complete the midfield for the hosts.

At the back, David “Cheche” Ochieng' and Musa Mohammed would be playing as the centre backs.

Abud Omar and Philemon Otieno could occupy the right and left back slots.

With Japan-based striker Michael Olunga and Ovella Ochieng' who plies his trade in Sweden partnering in attack.

Kenya Probable Line-up (4-4-2)

Patrick Matasi (GK) - David Ochieng’, Musa Mohammed, Abud Omar, Philemon Otieno, Anthony Akumu, Johanna Omollo, Francis Kahata, Eric Johanna, Michael Olunga, Ovella Ochieng’.

GHANA'S TACTICS

Kwesi Appiah will be deploying an attacking 4-4-2 to face the Harambee Stars on the weekend.

With Richard Ofori as the goalkeeper, Harrison Afful and Daniel Opare are expected to share the right and left back positions whilst one of Nicholas Opoku will partner Daniel Amartey in central defence.

Afriyie Acquah will be marshaling the midfield with either Inter Milan's Kwadwo Asamoah or Ebenezer Ofori with Belgium based Nana Ampomah and Christian Atsu on the right and left wings.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey would be joining Raphael Dwamena in attack.

Ghana's possible starting lineup:

Richard Ofori (GK) - Daniel Opare, Nicholas Opoku, Daniel Amartey, Harrison Afful - Afriyie Acquah, Ebenezer Ofori/Kwadwo Asamoah, Nana Ampomah, Christian Atsu - Thomas Partey, Raphael Dwamena.

Could Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope detect alien life?

If it does launch as currently scheduled in 2021, it will be 14 years late. When finally in position, though - orbiting the Sun 1.5 million km from Earth - Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope promises an astronomical revolution.

The US space agency boasts that it will literally "look back in time to see the very first galaxies that formed in the early Universe".

As if those claims were not bold enough, scientists have now surmised that the eventual successor to the world famous and beloved Hubble Space Telescope may - thanks to its 6.5m golden mirror and exquisitely sensitive cameras - have a another extraordinary talent.

The JWST, as it is called, may be able to look for signs of alien life - detecting whether atmospheres of planets orbiting nearby stars are being modified by that life.

Despite this, the project to build it narrowly survived cancellation by the US Government in 2011. That was in no small part down to its (perhaps appropriately) astronomical cost - an estimated $10bn rather than its originally planned $1bn.

Back on Earth, however, astronomers - including the University of Washington team who proposed "life-detection" observations using the telescope - are unerringly thrilled at the prospect of its launch.

How do you detect life on distant planets?

University of Washington astronomer Joshua Krissansen-Totton and his team have looked into whether the telescope could detect signs of what they call "biosignatures" in the atmospheres of planets that are orbiting a nearby star.

"We could do these life-detection observations in the next few years," says Mr Krissansen-Totton.

The basis for this search may lie in JWST being so sensitive to light that it could pick up so-called "atmospheric chemical disequilibrium".

Image copyrightHIMAWARI/JMA/@SIMON_SAT

Image captionEarth's atmosphere would change if all life was suddenly removed

It may not be a catchy term, but it is an idea with a long heritage, promoted by celebrated scientists James Lovelock and Carl Sagan.

The reasoning is that if all life on Earth disappeared tomorrow, the many gases which make up our atmosphere would undergo natural chemical reactions, and the atmosphere would slowly revert to a different chemical mixture.

It is continually held away from this state by organisms on our planet expelling waste gases as they live.

Because of this, searching for signs of oxygen (or its chemical cousin ozone) has long been thought to be a good way of finding life. But this does rest on the assumption that extraterrestrial life runs by the same biological rules as our own.

It might not. Therefore, assessing atmospheric chemical disequilibrium - looking for other gases and figuring out how far out of kilter from "normal' a planet's atmosphere sits - could be key to finding alien life of any kind.

The chemical make-up of the atmosphere of a planet orbiting another star can be measured in light by carefully measuring the minuscule dip in starlight as the planet passes between us and the star during the planet's orbit. The gases in the planet's atmosphere cause the light reduction to vary with the wavelength - or colour - of light, revealing information about how much of each chemical is present.

Where is the best place to look?

Mr Krissansen-Totton simulated the data that would be obtained if JWST were to look at planets orbiting a small Jupiter-sized star called TRAPPIST-1, about 39.6 light-years away from our Sun. This star caused a sensation in 2017 when it was discovered to host seven Earth-sized planets, several of which could possess liquid water, and hence might be a good bet for hosting life.

The Washington researcher predicts that James Webb could measure the amounts of methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of the fourth planet, TRAPPIST-1e, from the dips in light at wavelengths affected by these gases.

It would be a tough measurement of an unimaginably tiny signal, but Cornell University astronomer Prof Jonathan Lunine, who was not involved in this study, is excited by the prediction, saying "they make the case that this can really be done with JWST".

Media captionAll seven planets are thought to have Earth-like characteristics (Photo credit: Nature)

Once the measurement is made, though, Mr Krissansen-Totton explains, "you can then ask the question: do we know of any non-biological processes" that could produce that effect?"

Planetary atmospheres, including our own, he points out, can also be modified by non-biological processes, such as volcanic activity. So, if the atmosphere of TRAPPIST-1e was found to be awry, researchers would then need to rule out any non-biological effects before declaring the existence of extraterrestrial life.

Mr Krissansen-Totton says that "that kind of confirmation is going to require multiple observations, to really make a totally solid case".

"But if we detect something that we don't have an alternative explanation for, I think that would be an incredibly exciting discovery."

Who else will be doing this?

For now, the telescope's golden mirror remains securely locked in a lab in California, and astronomers must continue to wait for these possibilities to be explored.

JWST will be joining a host of new facilities that will subject planets around other stars to some serious scrutiny over the next few decades.

Huge ground-based telescopes in Hawaii and Chile are also planned, and the European Space Agency's UK-led Ariel mission, designed to probe the atmospheres of planets around other stars, will blast off in the late 2020s.

Prof Lunine says: "I think that we're in a remarkable time for understanding our Universe and exploring the cosmos, and James Webb is going to take the next step in that.

"It is going to be truly worth it."

Prof Gillian Wright, principal scientist on the telescope's UK-led Mid-InfraRed instrument, agrees. "We've never had access to something this big in space before," she says.

"To say a telescope will open up new windows on the Universe sounds kind-of cliched, but with James Webb it's really true."

JWST is led by Nasa but is a joint venture with the European and Canadian space agencies. Dr Jonathan Nichols is a planetary scientist from the University of Leicester and a 2018 British Science Association media fellow

Nas denies Kelis abuse allegations in lengthy Instagram posts

Nas has responded to allegations made by his ex-wife Kelis, saying: "I do not beat women."

Singer Kelis alleged earlier this year that Nas had been physically abusive during their four-year marriage.

"Did he hit me? Mmhmm. Did I hit him back? Mmhmm. I'm not afraid to throw a punch, but I wouldn't have started it," she said.

Nas's first public response came via seven Instagram posts in which he claimed Kelis had been abusive to him.

The pair divorced in 2009, with Kelis saying in April that she considered going public about the alleged abuse at the time - after seeing pictures of Rihanna's face following an attack by Chris Brown.

Image captionNas and Kelis in 2004

"I remember so clearly, when the pictures came out with that whole thing that happened with her and Chris Brown, and the only way I can describe it was like Double Dutch.

"'Do I jump in? Do I say it?' Because I had bruises all over my body at that time," she told Hollywood Unlocked.

"Seeing her, the way she looked, and then looking at myself, I was embarrassed," Kelis said. "He knew it. He looked at me like, 'Are you gonna do it?'."

Nas said his response was the result of receiving a call from Essence Magazine "about my ex wife doing another sad fictitious story".

"This is what your life has come to sis? Exploiting some people's real struggle and pain... just to get at me... to get attention? Fame? Another fight against men?" he wrote in the first of the lengthy statements.

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

Image captionNas and Kelis were married for four years

The 44-year-old has a son with Kelis, who Nas complained of being unable to see as frequently as he wished.

He went on to describe a "decade of dealing with very hostile behaviour and verbal abuse", as well as mentioning "physical violent attacks".

Addressing claims that he had been violent against Kelis, elsewhere in the statement he said: "I did not beat up my ex-wife. Stop."

"Whenever one is constantly attacked the instinct is to restrain that person or defend yourself to prevent escalation.

"In hindsight now my advice to young men out there in a situation like that is to RUN at the very first sign of verbal abuse or physical."

Image captionNas is considered one of hip hop's greats

Nas, who's one of the best-selling hip hop artists in history, also remembered the "good times".

"I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW. But I thought you was beautiful.

"You came into my life at a time I was grieving from my mom's passing. You was a friend. Because of that I wanted to marry you," he wrote, before apologising for not being "the most faithful husband".

Kelis and Nas met in 2002 at an MTV Video Music Awards party. They married in 2005.

Four years later, while pregnant with their son Knight, Kelis filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences".

Nas's 2012 album Life Is Good featured the rapper sitting with his ex-wife's distinctive green wedding dress draped over his knee.

Newsbeat has contacted representatives of Nas and Kelis for comment.

Large-scale wind and solar power 'could green the Sahara'

Installing huge numbers of solar panels and wind turbines in the Sahara desert would have a major impact on rainfall, vegetation and temperatures, researchers say.

They found that the actions of wind turbines would double the amount of rain that would fall in the region.

Solar panels have a similar impact although they act in a different way.

The authors say their work reinforces the view that large-scale renewables could transform the Sahara region.

The scientists modelled what would happen if 9 million sq km of the Sahara desert was covered in renewable energy sources.

They focussed on this area because it is sparsely populated, and it is also exposed to significant amounts of sun and wind and is close to large energy markets in Europe and the Middle East.

According to authors' calculations, a massive installation in the desert would generate more than four times the amount of energy that the world currently uses every year.

Previous studies have shown that installing wind and solar can have an impact on temperatures - but the key difference with this research is the impact on vegetation.

"Our model results show that large-scale solar and wind farms in the Sahara would more than double the precipitation, especially in the Sahel, where the magnitude of rainfall increase is between 20mm and 500mm per year," said Dr Yan Li, the lead author of the paper from the University of Illinois, US.

"As a result, vegetation cover fraction increases by about 20%."

In the Sahel, the semi-arid region that lies to the south of the Sahara, average rainfall increased 1.12mm per day where wind farms were present, according to the study.

How do turbines and panels increase rainfall?

With wind turbines, it's all about the mixing of air caused by the rotation of the blades. Wind farms mix warmer air from above, which creates a feedback loop whereby more evaporation, precipitation and plant growth occurs.

"Wind farms increase surface roughness and therefore increase wind converging into low-pressure areas," said Dr Li. "The converging air has to rise, making it cool off and moisture condense, which will lead to increased rainfall."

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

Solar panels actually reduce the reflection of sunlight from the surface known as the albedo effect. This triggers a positive albedo-precipitation-vegetation feedback that leads to precipitation increases of about 50%, the authors report.

"The panels directly reduce the surface albedo which leads to more solar energy absorption and surface warming, which in turn strengthens the Saharan heat low, leading to more rising air and precipitation," Dr Li explained.

What would be the impact on people?

Mostly positive, say the authors.

"Precipitation increases predicted by our model would lead to substantial improvements of rain-fed agriculture in the region, and vegetation increases would lead to the growth in production of livestock," said Dr Safa Motesharrei, from the University of Maryland, another author of the paper.

"The Sahara, the Sahel, and the Middle East include some of the driest regions in the world, while experiencing high growth of population and poverty, and our study has major implications for addressing the intertwined sustainability challenges of the energy-water-food nexus in this region."

But temperature rises are bad for climate change, right?

The authors say that the heating impact of all those turbines and panels would not make an important difference.

"The local warming by wind and solar farms is much smaller compared with the reduced future warming from greenhouse gases that renewable power at this scale would imply," said Dr Li.

Will this work with smaller-scale renewable installations?

The authors also looked at other desert locations in different parts of the world but they found the impact on rainfall and vegetation growth was much smaller. They also believe that fewer panels and turbines would have a limited effect.

"Generally, the climate impacts are reduced with reduced installations, but this result depends also very much on the exact locations," said Dr Li.

Image copyrightYAN LI/EVIATAR BACH

"High-resolution modelling may be necessary to better investigate more regional impacts of wind and solar farms."

Should we now proceed with big installations in desert areas?

"Yes, I think so," said Dr Li.

"The main message for people, policymakers, and investors is the enormous benefits to the people, society, and ecosystem as a result of these solar and wind farms."

"We hope that, in the light of our findings, and because of the primary climate effect of these farms is the reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting mitigation of climate change, we could transform our energy sources. That can lead in turn to sustaining freshwater, food, and life on our planet."

The study has been published in the journal, Science.

London Fashion Week to go fur-free for the first time

London Fashion Week this year will be completely fur-free for the first time.

The event takes place this month and will be the first of the big fashion weeks to get rid of fur.

The announcement comes from the British Fashion Council after a survey of the designers included in this year's schedule.

It follows the news that Burberry has pledged to stop using real fur in its products and will phase out its existing fur items.

Gucci is another high fashion brand which vowed to go fur-free from 2018, and the list is growing.

Wendy Higgins, Director of Communications for Humane Society International, says this is a "pivotal moment in the demise of the cruel fur trade".

"Fur cruelty is no longer welcome on the catwalk at London Fashion Week, and that is a powerful and exhilarating victory for animals that we hope others will follow."

Newsbeat has contacted the British Fur Trade Association for comment.

A fur-free Britain?

Media captionHow to tell the difference between real and fake fur

MPs called for a ban on the sale of real fur to be considered in July.

The issue was investigated by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) after it found several high street and online retailers were selling real fur wrongly labelled as fake.

These included TK Maxx, BooHoo, Boots, Amazon, Kurt Geiger and Tesco.

EFRA described the current labelling of fur products as "not fit for purpose" and said that retailers and Trading Standards had become complacent about incorrectly labelled items.

Image captionA debate on banning fur imports took place in Parliament earlier this year

The Labour Party also pledged to ban all fur imports to the UK in June after two separate petitions with more than 500,000 signatures called for government action.

Labour's shadow chancellor John McDonnell told Newsbeat at the time that "we should not have a fur trade that relies upon the suffering of animals abroad".

Fur farming has been banned in Britain since 2000 but figures show the UK imported almost £75m of fur in 2017.

Even though the farming of fur is illegal, it's still legal to sell some types of real fur that have been imported from other countries.

June 06, 2018

The Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga remake of A Star Is Born has published its first official trailer ahead of what is now scheduled to be an October release. So for all of you Cooper doubters out there — there is video evidence that the man can sing.

The reboot is based on William Wellman's 1937 film, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The film was remade in 1954, starring Judy Garland and James Mason, and again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. The new film will feature songs both written and performed by Gaga.

Cooper plays Jackson Maine, a country music star on the brink of decline who discovers a talented unknown named Ally (Gaga). The two begin a passionate love affair, which is put under strain as Ally's budding fame begins to eclipse Jackson's.

The cast of A Star Is Born additionally includes Sam Elliott, Bonnie Somerville, Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle, Greg Grunberg, Michael Harney, Willam Belli, Rafi Gavron, Eddie Griffin, Rebecca Field, Anthony Ramos, D.J. "Shangela" Pierce, and Michael D. Roberts.

Apple v Amazon: Battle of the titans

In early September, Amazon's market value briefly went over $1tn (£779bn), just over a month after Apple became the first public company in the world to achieve such a feat. Both tech companies have grown over the last few years, but will this continue?

Apple and Amazon are as different from each other as apples and oranges.

Apple is a tech company that is also a trendy consumer brand. Its computers and devices have often been must-have gadgets, and customers are willing to pay far more for their products than cheaper alternatives.

On the other hand, Amazon is where people go when they want to get a product more cheaply, more easily, or more quickly.

Since the iPhone first went on sale in 2007, Apple shares have soared by 1,100% and have jumped almost a third in the past year.

As for Amazon, the internet retail giant has seen a steady, yet speedy rise in its share price, with its market value jumping from $600bn to $700bn in just 16 days.

In contrast, the same feat took Apple 622 days.

Although Apple and Amazon offer different products and services, they are both technology firms and make up two of the five best performing technology stocks on the market - typically known as FAANG, which stands for Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google.

Which company has a better outlook on long term growth? Here's a look at some of the key areas for each firm, and how they are are performing.

Device sales

Traditionally, most of Apple's revenues have come from its device sales - particularly the iPhone, iPad, iMac and iPod.

Apple only has a 14% share of the global smartphone market, yet its revenues consistently dwarf its nearest competitor.

According to Strategy Analytics, in the first quarter of 2018, Apple captured $61bn in revenues, whereas Samsung only achieved $19bn, followed by Huawei in third position with $8bn in revenues.

Image captionThe iPhone is popular with consumers, but people now wait longer before they buy new devices

"Apple's dependence on iOS devices has been its strength, but moving forward presents its greatest challenge, in that opportunities to grow its user base will be limited," Juniper Research's head of forecasting and consultancy Windsor Holden tells the BBC.

"We don't believe revenues will decline, but the opportunity to generate significant new revenues will diminish over time, as increasingly Apple relies on creating additional value from existing customers."

Amazon has performed below expectations over the last five years with its devices, which include Kindle e-readers, Kindle Fire tablets and Echo voice-controlled speakers, but analysts say it can afford to do so.

"Amazon can sustain a model where they can sacrifice margins on devices, because they generate revenue from services and content," explains Gartner principal analyst Roberta Cozza.

In 2017, there were 1.5 billion smartphone shipments worldwide, according to Juniper Research.

However shipment growth will continue to slow down over the next five years, since most consumers in western markets now already own smartphones.

Apple also faces huge competition in all regions from Chinese Android smartphone makers, who are releasing feature-rich premium devices which are cheaper than Apple and Samsung's devices.

"In a competitive landscape where you have this level of commoditisation and low cost, it becomes risky for Apple to heavily rely on hardware sales," adds Ms Cozza.

Connected home

One key area of business growth potential is the connected home.

Both Apple and Amazon have developed artificially intelligent virtual personal assistants and wireless smart speakers, but in this space Amazon has a clear advantage.

Apple's virtual assistant is Siri, and it recently released the Home Pod wireless speaker. Amazon's virtual assistant is Alexa, and it has a line of Echo smart speakers.

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

Image captionAmazon has an advantage over Apple in the connected home space

The Home Pod is focused on providing a music experience, while Amazon wants you to use the Echo to control the lights in your home and to manage your daily life.

And Amazon's Echo already has a much higher household penetration than Apple's Home Pod.

"If you speak to people in the industry, they say it's a lot easier to work with Amazon, because you're dealing with a much more open ecosystem," says Mr Holden.

"It's become very easy for third parties to create apps for Alexa, [whereas] Apple has always tended to be almost defensive of its control of the iOS ecosystem."

Ms Cozza agrees. She says that Amazon has been very active in pushing Echo's usefulness in the home, in enterprise and in cars, whereas Apple has not, and has far fewer partners.

Services

When it comes to services, Apple and Amazon's offerings differ considerably.

Amazon is primarily focused on ecommerce, but apart from devices, it also sells apps, has a cloud computing business Amazon Web Services (AWS), offers video content streaming with exclusive TV content, and is also in the online payments space.

AWS has proved to be particularly lucrative - it has seen sales jump by 49% to $6.1bn in the second quarter of 2018, and its operating profit has risen to $1.64bn, from $916m in the same period in the previous year.

Juniper estimates that the cloud computing market for software, platform and infrastructure-as-a-service will be worth over $145bn in 2020.

Amazon is the largest player in this market, with a third of the market share.

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

Image captionApple is focused on promoting its Apple Music subscription streaming service

"Amazon's strength in the cloud historically has been the ability to attract an enormous variety of customers; from large corporates such as Netflix, to individuals," says Mr Holden.

"Moving forward, it will be a key player in the Internet of Things (IoT) movement, particularly given its wide-ranging AWS tools and ability to provide edge computing services."

Apart from devices, Apple is mostly focused on its Apple Music streaming service; Apple Pay contactless payments; and selling music tracks and mobile apps on the iTunes Store.

But it could potentially develop other services.

"Apple has other avenues - immersive technology in education; and think about wearables and healthcare," says Ms Cozza.

"I think still there are a lot of services and opportunities where Apple can grow."

Long-term growth

Both Amazon and Apple are hugely successful businesses, and in fact their joint total worth could encapsulate 25 of the biggest companies in the US.

But which one has the greatest potential for long term growth?

Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, feels that both companies will continue to grow, but at a different pace.

"They're still really admired, but there are concerns that Apple won't be able to keep pushing their iPhone as heavily as it has done in an era where there's much more competition," he tells the BBC.

Apple's share price growth has seen a lot of stops and starts, he says. It needs another "breakthrough" product and a new mass market to sell to, or its growth will stagnate.

As for Amazon, because it is a younger company than Apple, it still doesn't have an established presence in many countries, so it has more room to grow than Apple, which already has a global customer base.

"Amazon is much more of a mass market player than Apple - with some instances you could use Amazon every day," he said.

"With Apple you would only buy one product a year. Amazon has a much bigger potential to scale up than Apple."

On the downside, both companies have grown so large that they now face the threat of regulation from a number of governments, to say nothing of additional taxation.

Still, the consensus is that Apple and Amazon's fortunes are unlikely to be dented anytime soon.

"Both companies are facing issues around regulations. There are issues about taxation, but if it comes down to a straight fight between Amazon and Apple, then given that Amazon has these various strong strings to its bow, then ultimately my belief is that Amazon will win out," says Mr Saunders.

Mac Miller: US rapper 'found dead at home' aged 26

US rapper Mac Miller has been found dead at his California home, a Los Angeles coroner has confirmed.

Media reports say the 26-year-old, who was open about his substance abuse, died from an apparent overdose.

The rapper, whose real name was Malcolm James McCormick, rose to fame after topping US charts with his debut album in 2011.

He released his latest record, Swimming, earlier this year and was due to go on tour.

"The music artist known as Mac Miller died today in his Studio City home," the LA County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner said in a statement.

"In the late morning of September 7, Malcolm McCormick was found unresponsive.... authorities were called and Miller was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:51 (18:51 GMT).

"At this time, an autopsy is pending and a cause of death has not been determined."

Miller went through a well-publicised break-up with singer and girlfriend Ariana Grande earlier this year.

The pair, who met in 2012, collaborated on a number of songs and performed together at the One Love Manchester concert in 2017.

Charges were filed against the rapper last month after he was arrested in May for driving under the influence and hit and run.

Grande spoke out publicly about ending their "toxic relationship" after fans blamed her for his arrest.

Image captionGrande suspended comments on her Instagram account on Friday shortly after Miller's death

"I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be," she said in a typed message posted on social media.

Grande said she had "tried to support his sobriety" for years, and was praying that he "figures it all out".

An early beginning

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Miller began to focus on his music while still at school and released his first mixtape under the name EZ Mac at just 15.

Maturing in the public eye, he starred in a MTV reality series in 2013 which followed him and a group of friends after he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career.

He released a series of albums and EPs across the last decade, collaborating with high-profile artists like Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell Williams.

In his final tweets posted on Thursday, the rapper promoted the North American tour he was set to embark on next month.

He was "a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans." his family said, in a statement confirming his death.

Artists including Snoop Dog, Wiz Khalifa and Shawn Mendes paid tribute to Miller after news of his death broke on Friday.

In a moving tweet, Chance the Rapper said he was "completely broken" after hearing the news and described Miller as "one of the sweetest guys I ever knew".

'Mac Miller could do it all'

Analysis by BBC Music Reporter Mark Savage

A lot of rappers don't make beats. A lot of beat-makers can't rap. Mac Miller could do it all, lending an uncommon intimacy to his best songs.

He started piano lessons at the age of six, later picking up drums, bass and keyboards. By the age of 15, he'd released his first mixtape, But My Mackin' Ain't Easy, but it was his fourth release, 2010's KIDS - a playful, freewheeling collection of party tunes that won him a recording contract.

Over the years, he shed his frivolous, frat-boy reputation, making increasingly mature, introspective records that dealt with his personal demons; as well as 2016's The Divine Feminine, a naive but affecting (and occasionally too-graphic) concept album about what he called "the feminine energy of the planet," but which many took to be a tribute to his partner, Ariana Grande.

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

Image captionThe rapper had more than eight million followers on Twitter

In music, and in his interviews, he was open about his addictions - which eventually prompted Grande to end their relationship, describing it as a "toxic relationship". But Miller refused to exploit their break-up on his latest album, Swimming. "Everybody wants a headline / I don't got nothin' to say," he rapped on Programs, released in May, just weeks after their split was confirmed.

Instead, the album documented his ongoing struggles with substance abuse. "Got my head underwater, but I ain't in the shower, and I ain't getting baptised," he confessed on Jet Fuel. The halting vocals and fractured, subdued production made it clear he was suffering but there was always a sense of optimism - a promise that those demons could be beaten.

Tragically, it appears he lost the battle.

Morgan Freeman Gets Emotional While Receiving Deauville Film Fest Career Honor

“For reasons that are deeper than usual this year, I am grateful to receive this award,” the 'Dark Knight' actor said, seemingly referring to a CNN story that saw eight women accuse him of harassment and inappropriate behavior.

In his first festival appearance since he was accused of inappropriate behavior earlier this year, Morgan Freeman accepted a career tribute at the Deauville Film Festival on Friday.

Scores of fans lined up for hours to see the Oscar winner, who also received several standing ovations during the star-studded ceremony.

After an effusive speech by Cannes best actor winner Vincent Lindon, Freeman took to the stage to accept the award. In brief remarks, he teared up and seemingly acknowledged the accusations. “For reasons that are deeper than usual this year, I am grateful to receive this award,” he said.

At an earlier press conference, Freeman ignored a question regarding #MeToo and the press was instructed to keep the questions to his career.

In May, CNN published an explosive article accusing the actor of harassment and inappropriate behavior by eight women. Freeman apologized and vehemently denied the accusations in two statements. He subsequently asked CNN for a retraction, but the network stood by its reporting.

At the time, SAG-AFTRA said it was reconsidering his lifetime achievement award.

The 81-year-old did respond to a question about whether he has dealt with racism in Hollywood. “Throughout my career, no. Amazingly, I have landed roles that were absolutely not written for anyone black to play. But there I was doing it,” he said.

“Racism, it exists, but we watch television, we watch movies and we pay attention to what the actors are doing, then I think it's almost negligible except for certain areas of life. Can't make it clearer than that,” he added, leaving the audience slightly befuddled.

Later asked to share his thoughts about what is going on in the United States right now and if there are any words he would like to say to the president, he jokingly put the microphone down.

Following the press conference, Freeman cancelled some interviews, citing fatigue, as he had made a trip to the WWII landing beaches nearby in Normandy the previous day. However he did give an interview to Le Parisien newspaper, noting that on his third trip to the festival, one memory stands out: “The last time, I met a very sexy young woman. Sometimes it feels good to flirt, and I like that.”

Freeman will next appear in Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, due for release Nov. 2.

The secret ingredients chefs use to flavour their food

If you’ve ever tried to replicate a dish from a restaurant only to find it was lacking something, it was likely missing the chef’s secret ingredient. Secret ingredients, typically a kitchen staple, can elevate any dish – and chefs are now sharing their go-tos on question-answering site Quora in response to:

“What is your number one secret food ingredient?” According to chef Jordi Bross, there is one ingredient that he will not cook without – stock. “It’s essential to western cuisine and to most others around the world,” he wrote.

“[Stocks] are essential to get adequate flavour in a variety of dishes. They are the base for diverse sauces, glazes, and a huge variety of other preparations.” “Always have stock in your kitchen,” he advised. Bross isn’t the only chef who considers the flavoured liquid an essential in the kitchen – other chefs agreed that it can significantly improve a dish. Another chef, Natt Soini, revealed that monosodium glutamate (MSG) is his secret ingredient, and claims that the flavour enhancer doesn’t deserve its bad reputation. “Half a teaspoon of it really brings the umami in your home cooking, even better than adding more salt or sugar,” he wrote.

“Also, the notion that MSG is dangerous for you is a myth.” MSG is a commonly-used flavouring that became controversial after it was linked to side effects such as nausea and chest pain.

The Food and Drug Administration classifies it as an ingredient “generally recognised as safe”, but requires that it is listed on food labels. Additionally, soy sauce, fish sauce, and sugar were all on the list, as was vinegar, surprisingly. According to homechef and “eater” Chelsea Westmoreland, vinegar is often what a dish requires when it’s missing “something” – and adding salt won’t fix the problem. “It’s not salt, it’s acidity” that’s needed, she wrote.

For one chef, Ralph Oei, mayonnaise is the integral component – as it adds “acidity, sweetness, saltiness, and smoothness, without being too obvious”.

To really transform a dish from boring to exceptional, all it requires is a dash of added flavour – from any one of the secret ingredients.

6 Surprising Ways Garlic Boosts Your Health

Garlic. Roasted in olive oil, it can melt in your mouth like butter, while chopped and raw, it can taste pungent and sharp. Either way, this herb-like vegetable offers significant benefits — on the inside and out.

It’s the organic sulfur compound allicin in garlic that gives it its pungent smell and makes it a healthy addition to your diet.

What garlic can do for you

1. Boost immunity: In test tubes, garlicappears to kill cancer cells, and studies involving people show some of the same outcomes. According to the Iowa Women’s Health Study, involving 41,000 middle-aged women, those who routinely ate garlic, fruits and vegetables had a 35 percent lower colon cancer risk. Benefits came from raw and cooked garlic – not supplements.

2. Work as an anti-inflammatory: Researchhas shown that garlic oil works as an anti-inflammatory. So, if you have sore and inflamed joints or muscles, rub them with the oil.

3. Improve cardiovascular health: The verdict is still out on whether garlic improves your cholesterol levels, but research does indicate it can have a positive impact on your arteries and blood pressure.

Investigators believe red blood cells turn the sulfur in garlic into hydrogen sulfide gas that expands our blood vessels, making it easier to regulate blood pressure. The German Commission E, similar to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, recommends 4 grams of garlic daily – the size of one large clove – to reduce your risk of heart disease.

4. Give you better hair & skin: Garlic’s antioxidants and antibacterial properties can clear up your skin by killing acne-causing bacteria. Some data shows rubbing raw garlic over pimples can clear them away. Be aware, though, that it could cause a burning sensation on your skin.

5. Protect your food: Those same antibacterial properties in fresh garlic can kill the bacteria that lead to food poisoning, including salmonella and E.coli. Don’t use garlic as a substitute for proper food sanitation and food handling, though.

6. Treat athlete’s foot: Garlic also fights fungus. If you have athlete’s foot, soak your feet in garlic water or rub raw garlic on your feet to attack the itch-causing fungus.

Maximize the garlic

While you can steep chopped garlic in hot water to make tea, covering the taste with honey, taking advantage of garlic’s benefits is a little complicated. Heating it or putting it in a recipe can change its pH balance. The enzymes from the allicin need a few minutes to start working, so let it sit after you mince, crush or chop it.

You’ll get the most benefit from raw garlic. But if you choose to cook it, don’t heat it above 140°F. Higher temperatures kill the allicin, so add garlic to your recipes when you’re almost done cooking.

Women aren't freezing their eggs because of their careers — it's because they can't find the right partners

Women are increasingly freezing their eggs because they lack a stable partner to have children with — not because they're focused on building their careers. That's according to a recent study of women in the US and Israel.

  • Women are freezing their eggs because they can't find stable partners — not because they're focused on building their careers.
  • That's according to a small study of women in the US and Israel.
  • Other research points to an imbalance of highly educated men and women, and some experts say men can be intimidated by women's professional achievements.

"The caliber of women is just higher than the caliber of guys."

That's what one woman told researchers in a recent study of women's motivations for freezing their eggs.

The researchers behind the study, led by Marcia C. Inhorn at Yale University and cited in The New York Times, conclude that lack of a stable partner is the most common reason for women to freeze their eggs — not a single-minded commitment to career planning, as is popularly believed.

In fact, career planning was the least common motivation for egg freezing in this study.

The study was small: The researchers interviewed 150 women who had undergone the procedure in the US and in Israel. But the findings echo those of other research in countries across the globe.

The results of Inhorn's study showed that 85% of the women in the study were single when they froze their eggs, and most were heterosexual. The majority of the women in the study were highly educated professionals who'd gone through the procedure in their late 30s.

There's an imbalance of highly educated men and women

In a paper describing the study, the authors cite an imbalance of highly educated men and women, across the globe but especially in the US. They write: "There was clear acknowledgment by many of the women in both countries that men of similar backgrounds — namely, single, college-educated, professionals, often with advanced degrees and high earnings — were simply hard to find."

That finding makes sense in the context of previous research on the lack of "marriageable" men in the US. A 2017 paper from the University of Zurich, cited in Thrive Global, found that the fewer manufacturing jobs there are in a particular town or county, the lower the marriage rates in that area.

It's a two-way street, experts say.

"The lack of good jobs for these men is making them less and less attractive to women in the marriage market, and women, with their greater earnings, can do fine remaining single," Marianne Bertrand, an economist at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, told Thrive Global.

On the other hand, "for gender identity reasons, these men may not want to enter into marriages with women who are dominating them economically, even if this would make economic sense to them," Bertrand told Thrive Global.

Interestingly, many women in Inhorn's study told the researchers that they had tried "dating down," only to find that less educated or less successful men seemed to be "intimidated" by their achievements.

Indeed, journalist Jenna Birch documents a similar phenomenon in her book "The Love Gap": Men say they want women who are smart, driven, ambitious, and accomplished — but when they actually date these women, they hesitate to start a relationship with them. Some men may be made uneasy by such a woman's success, Birch found, especially if they haven't yet achieved that level of success in their own careers.

In August, The New York Times reported that women who opt to freeze their eggs are getting younger and younger, and that the process is getting less expensive. (The Times reports that the cost of a single cycle can range from about $4,000 to $7,000.)

"I wear sunscreen to protect myself from future sun damage," one woman told The Times. "I work out to keep off my weight. Why would I not do something to prevent future emotional pain and suffering?"

Obama rails against Trump, Republicans in fiery return to campaign trail.

Former President Barack Obama launched his return to the campaign trail Friday with a fiery speech in Illinois, accusing President Trump and fellow Republicans of becoming a “home” to “the politics of division and resentment.”

In part of his midterm effort to rally Democrats to the polls and loosen Republicans' grip on power in Congress, the former president warned that the stakes are high and the consequences of staying on the sidelines “dire.”

He reminded voters that Republicans want to continue to unravel his signature health care law, while delivering some of his toughest broadsides against the GOP since leaving office – referring to Trump by name, something he often avoids.

Obama claimed certain “powerful and privileged” people want to “keep us angry because it helps them keep their power and their privilege.”

“It did not start with Donald Trump,” Obama said. “He is a symptom, not the cause. He’s just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.”

“Appealing to tribe, appealing to fear, pitting one group against another, telling people that order and security will be restored if [it wasn’t] for those who don’t look like us or don’t sound like us or don’t pray like we do, that’s an old playbook,” Obama said, adding that people on either side of the aisle will call out “bigots and fear mongers” in a healthy democracy.

To cheers, Obama declared: “We are Americans; we’re supposed to stand up to bullies, not follow them.”

Nobody wants to buy Warren Buffett's Southern California vacation home, and he just cut the price by $3 million.

Warren Buffett first listed his Laguna Beach, California, home for $11 million in early 2017. In August, he reduced the price by more than $3 million to $7.9 million.

  • Warren Buffett first listed his Laguna Beach, California, home for $11 million in early 2017.
  • In August, he reduced the price by more than $3 million to $7.9 million.
  • Buffett purchased the home for just $150,000 in 1971, which is less than $1 million in today's dollars.

It's been over a year and a half since Warren Buffett listed his Laguna Beach, California, home for sale — and it still seems to be lacking an interested buyer.

In August, he cut the $11 million asking price by more than $3 million, reports the Orange Country Register.

But Buffett could still see a big return if it sells close to the asking price of $7.9 million. The Berkshire Hathaway CEO has owned the home since 1971, when he purchased it for $150,000. That's about $934,000 in today's dollars. He's since renovated the place, which has six bedrooms and more than 3,500 square feet of living space.

The billionaire investor had primarily used it as a beach retreat for his family, but they reportedly hadn't used it much since his first wife, Susan, died in 2004.

Let's take a tour of Buffett's beach-town home.

Ex-Dallas Cowboys player Joseph Randle arrested on suspicion of rape, records show.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle was arrested in Kansas on suspicion of rape early Friday morning.

Sedgwick County Jail records say Randle was booked around 3:40 a.m. and according to the Wichita Eagle, his bond has not yet been set. Details about the alleged incident were not immediately clear.

The former NFL player has racked up a series of arrests since being released by the Cowboys in 2015, according to the newspaper. In June, a county judge sentenced him to five years of probation stemming from charges related to a house party two years ago in Wichita in which he was convicted of aggravated burglary and battery, criminal threat and marijuana possession.

An American Airlines passenger says a flight attendant told her to urinate in a plastic bag after the toilets stopped working during a 6-hour flight to Hawaii.

  • An American Airlines passenger says she was told to urinate in a plastic bag after the toilets stopped working on her August 31 flight from Phoenix, Arizona, to Kona, Hawaii.
  • She said the 187 passengers aboard the flight were told there was a problem with the bathrooms and the only toilet open on the plane was overflowing.
  • American Airlines later said the toilets had been clogged by a diaper that had been flushed.

An Arizona woman claimed that an American Airlines flight attendant told her and other passengers aboard a flight to Hawaii to urinate in plastic bags and bottles after the toilets on their plane were clogged by a diaper.

The woman told KPNX that the 187 passengers aboard her August 31 flight from Phoenix to Kona, Hawaii were told there was a problem with the bathrooms and that the only toilet open on the plane was overflowing.

In video of the incident obtained by KPNX, the woman, who requested to remain anonymous, can be seen speaking to flight attendants about the issue.

"What do you mean I have to pee in a bag?" the woman asked in the video, which was filmed during the six-hour flight.

"They're overflowing. This one has like this much left," the flight attendant responded, suggesting again the woman use a sanitary bag and adding that she knows it's "gross."

The flight attendant can then be heard saying: "I know, it's horrible, and guys are going in bottles."

American Airlines confirmed to KPNX that there was trouble with the plane's toilets, though the company said all were working when the flight took off.

The statement said: "We are very sorry for the trouble this caused the 187 passengers on flight 663. Our customer relations team will be reaching out to all of the passengers on this flight to extend our apologies.

"At American, lavatories must be working properly prior to departure. If an American flight is in the air, and all lavatories become inoperative, the flight will divert to the nearest suitable airport in order for maintenance to rectify the situation.

"Due to the location of the aircraft, the flight continued to its intended destination. The issue was subsequently rectified upon arrival in Kona, and our flight returned to Phoenix as scheduled."

The woman who filmed the video of the flight attendant said she was offered $240 in vouchers and 17,500 miles for compensation, but declined because she thought it was not enough.

Meet the trailblazer Asnath Mahapa who is the first black female pilot in South African Airways (photos) .

- Asnath Mahapa has set the pace in a particular African airline company.

- She is the first black woman pilot in South African Airways

- She founded the African College of Aviation to help more African women get into aviation

Setting a trend is not an easy thing to do. But some people have gone ahead to make it happen. An example is the trailblazing Asnath Mahapa who made history by becoming the first black female pilot in a particular airline company called the South African Airways. Asnath, 38, grew up in Limpopo, South Africa and fell in love with the idea of flying when she was just 13 years old. As gathered by NAIJ.com, she was just 20 years old when she became South Africa's first black woman commercial pilot in 1999.

However, it wasn't until 2003 that Asnath realised that her determination had led to a historic achievement. In an interview with CNN's African Voices, she said. "Before I knew it, I was on TV, the front page of newspapers, and that came as a shock because I was 22 at the time. I was still very young." Her biggest highlight was joining the South African Airways. It was at this point that she realised more women needed to join the aviation industry.

She then founded the African College of Aviation in 2012 to help open doors for more young women. She also established a foundation to help raise funds for those who may not be able to afford the expensive fees at flying schools. Asnath's message to the youth is to work hard: "Anything is possible. Just believe in yourself and be prepared to work hard. Always remember — easy come easy go." Ghana’s ‘Vagabonds’ Wins Best Short Film At Montreal World Film Festival.

Nelly Bilson, Idrissu Tontie and Fiifi Asher, some of the child actors in the short film

‘Vagabonds’, a Ghanaian short film by Amartei Armar, is raising the bar on world film platforms for becoming the first African film to win an award at the 2018 Montreal World Film Festival (MWFF) in 42 years.

The film has brought honour to Ghana’s film industry, being the only film representing the African continent while competing in the world competitive category.

The 2018 MWFF was held in Canada from August 23 to September 3, 2018.

It is organised annually to encourage cultural diversity and understanding between nations. It embraces film productions worldwide and encourages upcoming filmmakers to showcase their work in order to stimulate the development of quality cinematography around the world.

This year’s event attracted a number of filmmakers around the world, as well as screening of international films.

‘Vagabonds’ was among the films that were screened and it went ahead to win best short film.

The win comes not long after the film was praised for its uniqueness and quality at the Black Stars International Film Festival back home in Accra.

‘Vagabonds’ is a story of two orphaned brothers 10-year-old Owusu and five-year-old Gyasi who feel trapped in their orphanage.

The fear of being separated by adoption provokes Owusu’s desire to protect his brother and their bond at all cost. Owusu is willing to do whatever it takes, even if it means escaping into an unknown future.

The 14-minutes short film was produced by Yemoh Ike and features first-time child actors like Idrissu Tontie as Owusu, Fiifi Asher as Gyasi and Nelly Bilson as Maame. It also features Nana Ama McBrown in an unassuming supporting role that reveals a side of her we have never seen before.

Chinese I.T giant Inspur Group to establish West Africa headquarters in Ghana.

China’s leading cloud computing company, Inspur Group Co. Ltd, has chosen Ghana as its preferred destination in West Africa for the establishment of its regional headquarters.

According to Mr. Peter Sun, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Inspur Group, the decision by the company to establish its headquarters in Ghana was borne out of the country’s peaceful and stable nature, coupled with an impressive economic outlook, which saw Ghana grow at 8.5% in 2017, up from 3.6% in 2016. The Inspur CEO made this known on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, when his company paid a courtesy call on the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on the sidelines of the Ghana-Shangdong Business Conference, which was held in Jinan, Shangdong Province.

Inspur, currently has a 57% share of global sales in the Artificial Intelligence server field, is the fastest growing server vendor in the world, and holds the biggest market share for the sale of servers in China. In addition to establishing its regional headquarters in Ghana, Mr. Peter Sun, indicated further that ten (10) Ghanaian students will be selected and offered internship programmes with the company, with these ten students being trained to take up jobs in the company’s operations in Ghana and West Africa. Again, the Inspur CEO indicated the company will invite to China, every year, thirty (30) officials from the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, to be trained in the fields of cloud computing and data technology.

Mr. Peter Sun also indicated the readiness of the company to assist Ghana in the fields of revenue mobilization and green development, “a real estate development concept that carefully considers social and environmental impacts of development.” On his part, President Akufo-Addo noted “the matters you are interested in, i.e. green development, mobilization of tax revenues, and the establishment of your West African Headquarters in Ghana are important matters for us. It will be very good for our country to be involved with major global companies like yours, as it will expose us to the best practices in the industry.”

The President described Inspur’s choice as an excellent one, because “Ghana is a stable country, our economy is picking up very rapidly, and so it is a good base not just for Ghana but also for West Africa.” President Akufo-Addo assured the company of the safety of their investment in Ghana, stressing that “we encourage foreign investment in our country. So, as a base for doing business in West Africa, Ghana is ideal, and it will be a win-win situation for us all.”

Diego Maradona: Argentine appointed manager of Mexican second-tier side.

Argentine legend Diego Maradona has been appointed manager of Mexican second-tier club Dorados de Sinaloa.

The 57-year-old World Cup winner played 91 times for his country between 1977 and 1994 and also managed them from 2008 to 2010.

His last club job was with Al-Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, which ended in April.

Mexican newspapers claim Maradona had been hired to replace Francisco Gamez, who was sacked as coach on Thursday.

The club issued a short video on their social media channels with the messages 'Welcome Diego', and 'Make it a 10', Maradona's shirt number as a player.

Maradona played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli among others during his playing career and is widely regarded as one of the best ever to play the game.

He won the World Cup in 1986 with his country, who he coached in the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Photos: Zinedine Zidane relaxes on luxury holiday as he waits for Manchester United job offer

As Zinedine Zidane Manchester United speculation hots up, the former Real Madrid manager is living his best life with a luxurious holiday with his family.

The French tactician has been out of work since leaving his post at the Bernabeu at the end of last season, in which he won a third Champions League final in a row.

He now seems to be taking a well-earned break, though sources close to the coach have recently told CaughtOffside that he’s communicated with Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial about being confident of getting an offer to replace Mourinho at Old Trafford imminently.

It remains to be seen if that will in fact happen, but for now Zidane seems to be taking it easy as photos below from the Daily Mail show the 46-year-old basking in the sun with his wife and sons, as well as taking a dip in the ocean…

Delta and Alaska Airlines Terminate Partnership

Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines, once close partners, terminated their partnership, largely because of Delta’s move to build up its own hub in Alaska Air’s hometown of Seattle.

The carriers confirmed last week their frequent-flyer and codeshare partnerships will end in April and each carrier described on the websites how the change would affect their customers.

“The airline would continue its commitment of investment and growth in the Pacific Northwest following a decision by Delta and Alaska Airlines to end their partnership,” said Delta Air Lines. “The decision is a positive milestone for both airlines as Alaska focuses on its merger integration with Virgin America and Delta focuses on creating more customer choice at its Seattle-Tacoma International Airport hub.”

The relationship between the two airlines had been among the closest between two U.S. airlines as their codesharing deal allowed the airlines to place their two-letter code and sell seats on some of each other’s flights. Alaska Air and Delta had a frequent-flyer partnership that allowed the members to earn and redeem miles on either carrier’s flights.

The partnership allowed Delta to grow its international operations from Seattle (SEA), especially routes across the Pacific, and Alaska Air to feed domestic passengers onto Delta’s overseas flights. Delta began building its own hub at Seattle, creating competing routes with Alaska Air including some of the airline’s usual routes between Seattle and California and Seattle and Alaska

Anas exposes international child trafficking ring in Ghana

Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, has released a documentary on the increasing numbers of child trafficking in Ghana.

The feature project, christened "Chained by Begging" is a collaboration between Anas and OAfrica, a child support organisation.

The documentary exposes the phenomenon of how child begging is more than just children asking for money on the streets but how children are trafficked by adults and used for business purposes.

In “Chained by Begging”, Anas Aremeyaw Anas demonstrates that the recent increase in child beggars can in some cases be linked to cross-border

child trafficking.

According to the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child and section 87 (1-2) of the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), child begging is child abuse and also prohibited by law.

It is considered as separation from family and exploitative child labour.

A statement released by OAfrica on the documentary said child begging is one of the worst forms of child labour which keeps children out of school.

It also separates children from their families while exposing them to hazardous living conditions and dangers such as rape, ill health and motor

accidents, it added.

"In seeking a holistic approach to dealing with this complex trans-border situation, we will need to involve Immigration, Social Welfare, the various Ministries and Embassies and the public,. The public are urged to report all children on the street and to stop giving to child beggars. We call for police and law enforcement agencies to arrest the traffickers," it added.

"Giving child beggars money does not help the children because the money goes to their “masters” and does not serve the wellbeing of these vulnerable and innocent children. In fact, it only makes the industry bigger with more street hildren and more attractive and lucrative for traffickers. If we want to STOP child begging in Ghana then we have to STOP giving money to the children on the street. This will help prevent additional children being recruited as child beggars.

With funding support from the European Union, OAfrica in collaboration with Tiger Eye PI and The Livingstone Foundation calls on us all to help stop child begging.

Below is a copy of the full statement released by OAfrica

Kumasi: Five drown after choppy Ankonim River sweeps away vehicle

Five bodies have been retrieved from the Ankonim River in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region capital, Friday after a vehicle in which they were travelling was swept away by strong currents.

The body of a sixth person believed to be the driver of the vehicle cannot be found.

The family of six were driving through flooded streets Thursday evening after heavy rains when the vehicle was dragged into the choppy river.

The Ankonim River overflowed its banks on Thursday after the heavy rains and blocked the only access route leading residential areas.

Joy News’ Erastus Asare Donkor, reports that the family was trapped in the saloon car for many hours before rescue workers arrived.

"Police are here with a pickup vehicle but there are no rescue workers and there are no heavy equipment to remove the [trapped] vehicle. I understand the fire service team came here but left," he described the scene before the bodies were retrieved.

The family were members of the Jehovah's Witnesses working on a new Kingdom Hall [church complex] in the area.

Libation

Police and personnel from the Ghana Fire Service spent hours trying to locate the vehicle and its occupants in the river.

With the flood waters receded by Friday dawn, they had a clear strategy on how to move in and retrieve the bodies.

After more than five hours, a libation was poured and divers moved in.

Bodies retrieved included that of a young teenage boy.

Barnaby Joyce sexual harassment investigation unable to reach conclusion

Complainant Catherine Marriott says National party’s inconclusive determination ‘isn’t good enough’

An eight-month investigation into a complaint of sexual harassment against the former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce has been unable to reach a determination, according to the woman who lodged it, Catherine Marriott.

Marriott issued a statement on Friday saying the New South Wales Nationals had emailed her on Thursday to advise they had “been unable to make a determination about my complaint of sexual harassment against the former leader of that party … due to insufficient evidence”.

Marriott expressed fury with that outcome. “This outcome simply isn’t good enough,” she said. “I’m extremely disappointed that after eight months of waiting, three trips to the east coast at my own expense to meet with the party, my name and confidential complaint being leaked to the national media, and my personal and professional life being upended, the National party have reached a no-conclusion verdict.”

She said while furious with the outcome, she was not surprised, because she did not consider the Nationals to have “the external processes in place to deal with a complaint of sexual harassment by a member of parliament”.

Marriott said she believed the complaint – which Joyce has consistently denied – had been handled internally by the state executive “with no professional external expert brought in at any stage to handle the matter”.

She said the only positive to emerge from the experience was the National party now had a framework to manage complaints.

“While it has come at enormous personal expense, I was not prepared to walk past this kind of behaviour any longer,” Marriott said.

“I am pleased I stood up for what I believed was right and I’m proud I found the courage to make a difference for other people who want to create influence through political circles in future”.

Marriott made the complaint against Joyce in February, and it proved the trigger for his resignation from cabinet. Joyce told reporters the complaint had contributed to his decision to step down. “It’s quite evident that you can’t go to the dispatch box with issues like that surrounding you,” he said.

After Marriott lodged her complaint on 20 February, initially with the National party’s federal executive, it was leaked to the media a few days later.

At the time Joyce said the claim was “spurious and defamatory” and said he had asked for it to be referred to the police.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. The Guardian is editorially independent, meaning we set our own agenda. Our journalism is free from commercial bias and not influenced by billionaire owners, politicians or shareholders. No one edits our Editor. No one steers our opinion. This is important because it enables us to give a voice to the voiceless, challenge the powerful and hold them to account. It’s what makes us different to so many others in the media, at a time when factual, honest reporting is critical.

More people are reading the Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.
